Chapter 6, Date Disasters!
Keith's POV
I was so excited for this date with Iris. I was going to win her heart over. We would take things slow and get to know each other. But maybe by the summer time she could go on tour with our band. She was so talented. I admired her so much. I was so nervous about the dance.
As well as excited.
I had to get her flowers. Some candy. Everything to woo her heart. Get her all over her shyness. We were doing so well together.
Just as I arrived at home there was Bobby Ashtor waiting for me by the front door. Bobby was in my class. I wondered what he could want on a friday afternoon.

"I was hoping to run into you before the big dance on Saturday. We had a deal before when you needed my help with the test at the start of the year remember Keith?" Bobby asks me as he leans on the door with his arms crossed.
I frown. "Oh yes you are right. What do you need?" I ask him.
Back when I was not doing hot in history Bobby helped me get a cheat sheet then I would owe him a favor any time any place. Because I was famous. I needed to get good grades that week so I could perform a concert. That same weekend. Bobby came through for me.
"Glad you are going to help. My sister Hilary is without a date. And she needs one for Saturday. She is in our grade. You know my twin? And she has her heart set to go with you" Bobby says to me. "so we have a deal?"
"But I have a date" I stammer.
"We had a deal. Do I need to tell your mom and the school board about you cheating in class?" he challenges me.
"No Bobby. I will pick up Hilary for the dance" I sigh.
"Thanks man! She will be ready. Be there to meet my folks about six" he orders to me. He slaps me on the arm before wandering off.
I was going to have to break my date with poor Iris. She was going to hate me. But I had to. Or my mom was going to ground me for life.
And no dance and no concert at all. My heart sinks. I wanted this date for weeks. Now no date with Iris. I see Laurie walk up the walk way with Iris. Her eyes light up when she sees me there.

"Hi Keith, Laurie and I bought dresses for the dance in town on our way home. We are going to try them on" she informs me.
"We need to talk" I tell her.
"What is going on Keith?" wonders Laurie.
"Alone!" I add.
Laurie nods then leaves us alone. Going into the house.
"I have sort of bad news for you" I begin to tell Iris.
"What might that be?" she asks me.
"I already had a date for the dance. I forgot. I asked you too. I did not expect both girls to say yes. I asked Hilary first" I lie.
She looks heart broken. I hated to lie to her like this.
"I see. I just agreed to ride with you all to the dance to. To sing with you guys. Wow, I will do it because your mom asked me to. But sure I understand" she stammers as her poor face turns red.
"I really wanted to go with you Iris" I promise her.
"No, it is okay. I get it. It is fine. Have fun with Hilary" she says softly.
I felt like scum of the earth.
"Iris, can we talk about this? We could have a date next week" I offer.
"I thought about this. And you know this is a sign. We should just be friends Keith. I think things would be best to stay that way. That way things like this do not happen" she says. "I am going to head home. Tell Laurie she can meet me over at my place if she wants to hang out" she replies. She goes to bolt home.
"Iris!" I sigh. Tears come to me.
I see her rush off. I wanted to run to her. Tell her the truth. But my pride would not allow me to do that.
I go inside. I run into Laurie and Danny.
Laurie looks upset with me.

"What did you do to Iris?" she demands to know.
"We saw her run off" Danny announces.
"I forgot I had a date for the dance when I asked her. I was so excited she said yes. I forgot about the other girl" I lie.
"Leave it to Keith" grumbles Laurie. "break the date with the other girl."
"I can't. I said yes to her first" I stammer.
"You are scum of the earth. I better go see if Iris is okay" mutters Laurie.
"I will come to. She needs a date for the dance" says Danny.
Laurie makes him stay. "No" she warns Danny. Then she takes off over to see Iris.
I sit down on the couch. Danny glares at me.
"So, who is the other woman?" he demands to know.
"Hilary Ashtor" I say. "Bobby's sister"
"That bow wow?" Danny says making a face.
"Yeah, that one. I owe Bobby a favor so I have to go with her" I say. "do not tell the girls or anyone" I warn him sternly.
"Fine" he says. "You break Iris heart then she will come to me" laughs Danny.
"Dream on chump" I argue.
"What is going on?" mom asks us.
"I have a date for the dance" I tell her.
"I know with Iris" mom tells me.
"No with Hilary" informs Danny.
"Hilary?" mom looked confused.
"I forgot I had another date lined up. Now I messed things up with Iris mom" I admit. "I like her so much. And I want her to know that it is real. She is going to listen to all the lies about me"
"I am sure Iris knows you well enough to know better" mom says to me.
"I don't know" I tell her. "I need to be alone. Excuse me"
I head up to my room. I shut the door behind me. Feeling so down in the dumps. I hoped Iris would let me take her out for a date next weekend.
She had to give me a second chance. Though I did not blame her if she decided to never talk to me again.
Question was how was I going to do that?
