Chapter 5, Spring Fling!
Keith's POV
A Few Weeks Later...
I was daydreaming a lot more these days. And It was all thanks to Iris. I was not the only boy at the high school who had noticed the beautiful new girl there. Now I once I had her hiding from me.
But it turned around and I was finding myself to be in the friend zone. I on the one hand did not mind being her friend. Getting closer to her. But I did not want to be just her friend. I found myself longing to be more to her than that.
I did not know how she felt about me. And I did not want to bring anything up. What if I scared her away? She was shy.
What if she did not feel the same? And I made myself look like a fool? Iris was doing so well. She sang in the choir because I helped her and Laurie helped her. The boys heard her voice at the spring concert. Now they flocked to her like they did Laurie.
I sigh as I glance over at Iris house across the street. I wondered if she would like to hang out this weekend? I had to keep those boys away from her. Before she lost her heart to one of them.
Then I would be a forever friend. It was friday. I had girls asking me out. But not the one I wanted. I wanted to go out with Iris. This Saturday was the school dance to. We were going to be singing there.
We had a gig.

"Does this school dance bum you out to Keith? Keith?" Laurie asks me. She comes in.
"It does me. Iris never asked me out to it" mutters Danny.
"Get lost she is never going to ask you out shrimp" Laurie laughs.
"Do you have a date for the dance" I ask Laurie.
She shakes her head. "No I don't at all"
"Why did some boy call last night?" wonders Danny. Her face turns red.
"To ask me for Iris's number" she mutters.
I frown.
"The one boy I wanted to go out with Sam Harris plans to ask Iris if he has not already" complains Laurie.
"The football jocky?" I ask her. She nods.
"The one and only" she says. "why are you not asking Iris to the dance?" she asks me.
"She is not interested in me" I sigh.
"What makes you think that?" asks Laurie.
"Because she loves me" Danny pipes up.
"Get out of here a moment. I need to talk to Keith. Alone" orders Laurie.
She shoos Danny out of there then shuts the door.
"Why do you assume she doesn't want to do with you?" wonders Laurie.
"Because, we are friends. I will ruin it like I always do" I answer. "I don't want to ruin what I have with her" I explain.
"Well, this is serious" she tells me. "you do know why she was so shy before don't you?"
"No" I say.
"She claims we are all her favorite band. Emily told me she has a crush on you. She was nervous to meet you" Laurie informs me.
I stare at her. "You are kidding me?" I ask.
"I am serious. Ask to go as friends. Then find out on the date how she feels. No harm in that" she says. "before I lose out on my chance with Sam" she sighs. "I am counting on you brother" she teases.
"You really think she is interested in me?" I ask.
I felt hopeful. She nods.
"I know so" she tells me.
We head down for breakfast. I wanted to catch Iris before she went off to school. Offer her a ride. So I could talk to her. Laurie came over with me. I ring the doorbell. Iris answers.

"Hi Keith hey Laurie" she greets us.
"Would you like a ride to school?" I offer.
She smiles. She looks pleased. "I would love to" she agrees.
We head to my car. Laurie lets Iris sit up front with me.
"I hear you guys are playing at the dance this weekend? Then before we know it prom will be coming along" she mentions to me.
"Right yes we are excited to play at our last school dance" I say to her.
"We are glad we have time for it" Laurie pipes up. "do you have a date yet Iris?"
"Me? Have a date? I had a few ask me. But i do not know the all that well enough to go out with them. I was not sure. I might go with a group of girls" she explains. "be there if you guys need help to set up" she offers.
"That is so sweet of you" Laurie tells her.
"Thanks" she laughs.
We pull up to the school. I park the car. Then Laurie hops out.
"Can I talk to you a moment Iris?" I ask. "alone?" I say as my palms sweat.
"Sure Keith" she answers.
"I know we are good friends. I like where things are with each other. But, I was hoping you might go to the....go to the dance with me" I blurt out loud. "I don't want to be stuck in your friend zone. I want to keep going. See if there is more"
Her eyes grow wide. She looks happy. She hugs me.
"You mean that?" she asks me softly.
I nod. "I truly mean that"
"I would love to be your date for the dance Keith. I was hoping you would ask me. I was turning down dates but you never asked until last moment" she chuckles.
"I am sorry I took so long" I softly say. "you are not the only one who gets a little shy" I joke.
She laughs. Then smiles.
"So, we have a date?" I ask her.
"It's a date" she agrees. I hug her. Then pull back. I give her a light kiss on the cheek.
"See you Saturday" I say. "I can't wait"
She smiles looking so happy. Then we get out of the car. After I open the door for her. Sam makes a beeline for her.
"Do we have a date? For Saturday Iris?" asks Sam.
"Sorry I agreed to go with Keith" says Iris.
"Why not ask Laurie. She needs a date" I tell Sam feeling pleased. I walk with Iris. I take her books for her as we head into the school together.
Things were looking up.
