The massive wolf broke the contact, its powerful body beginning to contort and writhe. Amara watched, mesmerized and horrified, as bones shifted with a sickening series of pops and cracks. Silver fur receded, replaced by human skin. The paws, with their deadly claws, shrank into hands. In a matter of seconds, the terrifying creature was gone, replaced by the tall, powerful man from the streetlamp. He was naked, his body sculpted from what looked like pure muscle, his face a mask of exhaustion and pain.
He stumbled forward, and Amara, without a thought, reached out to steady him. Her hand landed on his broad chest, and a jolt of pure energy, both hot and electric, shot up her arm. It was the same feeling from her dream.
He looked down at her, his golden eyes, now a deep, smoky brown, filled with a mix of awe and possessiveness. "Amara," he rasped, her name sounding both like a question and a final answer.
Her voice was a mere whisper. "You're him. The wolf."
"I am," he confirmed, his gaze intense. "My name is Kai." He winced, a hand going to his side where the creature had clawed him. The wound was deep, but even as she watched, it began to slowly knit itself back together.
Amara took a shaky step back, her mind reeling. Werewolves? She had just fought alongside one, and now she was touching him.
"You should be afraid," he said, reading the confusion in her eyes. "You should be running."
"I know," she replied, her voice gaining strength. "But... you saved me. And you're hurt." Her gaze flickered to his wound, the one that was already healing. "What was that? Who were those things?"
"They were Shadow Kin," he explained, his voice low and serious. "Servants of the Dark. They were hunting for you."
"Hunting me? Why?" she demanded, her fear turning to indignation. She was just a graphic designer. She had no place in a world of werewolves and dark creatures.
Kai reached out and gently cupped her face, his thumb stroking her cheek. The gesture was so soft, so tender, it completely disarmed her. "Because you are my mate," he said, his voice laced with an ancient reverence. "My other half. The mate bond is a powerful beacon, a light in the darkness. They were drawn to you because of it."
The words hung in the air between them. My mate. It felt both impossible and utterly right. Her world had just been turned upside down, but for the first time in her life, she felt like she was exactly where she was meant to be. He was a werewolf, she was human, and a great darkness was hunting her. But he was here. And she wasn't alone.
