Chapter Seven

Amara led Kai into her apartment, the silence inside as loud as the chaos they had left behind. She offered him a towel and a spare t-shirt, trying not to stare as his magnificent, scarred body was hidden from view. He put on the clothes, which were too small for his frame, the fabric straining across his broad shoulders. "You'll need to explain everything," she said, her voice steadier now. She poured two glasses of water, handing one to him. "Werewolves? Shadow Kin? My apartment just got attacked by monsters, and you tell me it's because I'm your 'mate'?" Kai took a slow sip, his eyes never leaving hers. "It's a long story. A secret world exists alongside yours. My pack, the Moonstone Pack, has been its guardian for generations. We maintain the balance, protect the humans who don't even know we exist." "And the Shadow Kin?" she prompted. "They're a parasitic force," Kai explained, his voice low and serious. "They feed on fear and chaos. They've been growing bolder, looking for a way to break through and consume this world. The mate bond between an Alpha and a human is a unique energy source. A beacon. My mate would be a weapon to them. A way to open a permanent rift." Amara sat down, the weight of his words pressing down on her. "So, you're saying I'm a target." "You are. But you're also the other half of my soul," he said, his golden eyes burning with an unspoken intensity. "You are bound to me, and I am bound to you. They can't touch you as long as I am here." A sharp, painful throb in Kai's side made him wince. The healing was working, but it was slow. Amara noticed his discomfort and the faint, dark stain seeping through the white t-shirt. "You're still hurt," she said, a flicker of worry in her eyes. She reached out, her fingers hovering over the wound. "It will heal," he insisted, but his voice was strained. "Let me help," she said. It was an urge she couldn't explain. She moved closer, her hand gently touching his side, her fingers tracing the edges of the fading wound. A warm, shimmering sensation spread from her touch, and Kai's breath hitched. The healing process sped up exponentially, the cut closing fully, leaving behind only smooth, unblemished skin. Kai stared at his side in disbelief, then looked back at her, his expression a mix of shock and wonder. "What... what was that?" Amara was just as bewildered. "I don't know," she whispered, pulling her hand back. "I just... wanted you to feel better." Kai reached out and took her hand in his, his grip firm. "This wasn't just my power. This was yours. The mate bond isn't just about protection; it's a shared power. Your touch... it amplified my healing. It's proof. You aren't just a human, Amara. You're a part of me." The words felt like a promise, an unbreakable vow. Amara looked into his eyes, no longer seeing a monster or a stranger, but something far more profound. Something she didn't yet understand but felt with every fiber of her being. "So, what happens now?" she asked, her voice soft. "Now," Kai said, pulling her gently towards him, "you're safe with me."
