Chapter Nine

301 Words
The following morning, Amara woke to the sound of Kai on the phone, his voice a low, commanding rumble. She couldn't make out the words, but the tone was enough. He was an Alpha. It was not just a title; it was who he was. He was a leader, a protector, and a force to be reckoned with. She found him in the living room, staring out the window, his expression grim. "Bad news?" she asked, her voice soft. He turned to face her, his gaze intense. "My Beta, Tunde, says a few more of those... things... were spotted. They're still looking for you. He wants me to bring you to the pack house. It's the safest place. It's... a fortress." Amara hesitated. The idea of being in a "fortress" felt confining, but she couldn't deny the fear that had been her constant companion since the night she met Kai. "Will I be a prisoner there?" she asked, her voice laced with trepidation. Kai’s expression softened. He walked over to her, taking her hands in his. "No. Never. You're my mate, not a prisoner. But you won't be able to leave without an escort. It's for your protection. The pack will be able to help keep you safe. I can't do this alone." She looked into his eyes, and saw the raw, honest truth in them. He was a powerful Alpha, but even he had his limits. The thought of facing this alone, without him, was unbearable. She had to trust him. She was in too deep now to back out. "Okay," she said, her voice a little shaky. "I'll go." A look of profound relief washed over his face. He pulled her into a tight embrace, and for a moment, she allowed herself to feel the comfort of his strength.
