Chapter 4: A Different World

1075 Words
(Maria POV) “Am I dead?” I asked myself when I opened my eyes. But, a loud beeping sound pulled me out of my reverie. My head was throbbing with pain and I tried to move my body but failed. After a few moments, everything started coming to my mind. My escape… Facing those filthy wolves… That big black wolf… And… And he changed into a human. My heart raced at the mere thought of that tragic memory. “No, no, no!!! This isn’t possible. My mind is probably playing tricks on me. But before I could get up from that bed, the door opened and several doctors and nurses entered in the room. I was lying on my front side and I can feel a big bandage covering my back. “Thank Goddess! You are finally awake,” Joseph said, and I looked at the doctor beside him. “How are you feeling now?” The doctor asked, and I gave him a curt nod. “Better, but my back is hurting like a b*tch,” I answered, and a smile appeared on Joseph’s lips. “Of course! Since you want to fight with the wild beasts to test your combat skills, this is the least you can get in return,” Joseph taunted me and I glared at him. “Don’t worry, Ms. Blake! We gave you the painkillers just a few minutes ago, you will be alright in no time,” He informed me before checking my bandage and vitals. “Alpha! She is alright now but needs a lot of rest to recover and heal. I am taking my leave for now,” He informed Joseph, leaving us alone. Joseph was silently staring at my face. “What?” I asked when the silence became too much for me to bear. “Have you any idea what could happen to you if we hadn’t found you at the right time?” he asked, and I could sense the hidden anger behind his words. My throat dried, and I looked at his face with fear. “S-so you mean that wolf… that black wolf who saved my life…” I didn’t have enough courage to complete my own words. He gave me a curt nod and my heartbeat increased. “Which means… you are not human. And your people?” I asked and looked towards the door like a wild beast would jump on me out of nowhere. “Buttercup! No need to panic. We are not going to harm you or hurt you. Calm down, a bit,” He said, but I felt trouble breathing. I put my hand on my throat, but It seemed my body forgot to breathe. Joseph helped me to turn my body a bit, so I could be in a more comfortable position, but I pushed him away like he would pounce on me like a hungry wolf. “Calm the f*ck down, Maria! We are not going to harm you,” he said, but my head started spinning with everything, and I felt like I would lose my consciousness any moment. “Stay… s-stay away… from me…” I tried to push him away and tried to breathe once again but failed. The machine was beeping loudly, and he cursed under his breath. “Maria, Please!!! Please breathe, sweetheart,” He cooed at me in a gentle tone, but I felt like a black wolf was standing in his place instead of his human form. “No!!! Don’t… come any c-closer,” I inhaled a sharp breath, and I felt like my lungs were about to give up. He strode towards me and cupped my face in his hands before pressing his lips on mine. My heart skipped a beat, but his touch had something magical in it. The moment our lips met, my heartbeat became normal. I stopped thrashing around, and my body calmed down a bit. I tried to push him away, but he wasn’t ready to let me go just yet. He licked the side of my lips and his one hand moved towards my nape. I gasped loudly, and he thrust his tongue in my mouth. An accidental moan slipped out of my lips and I felt his smile against my lips. “You belong to us, Cara Mia,” He whispered, and I gulped hard after registering his words in my mind. I pushed him away and looked into his eyes. My mind was a bit calmer than before. “Us? What do you mean by that?” I asked, and he scratched the back of his neck. “You mean to wolves’ family?” I asked, and he slowly nodded in yes. “You are out of your f*cking mind if you think that I will stay with you guys even for a single minute. I will run away from this damn palace at the first chance and will never look back,” I answered him. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “You can try all you want, Cara Mia! But you will never be able to run away from us. We are your destiny,” He elaborated. “F*ck destiny and f*ck all of you!!! I didn’t belong here, Joseph,” I was clear in my mind about what I wanted and what I didn’t want, and I would never allow anyone to confuse me with this. “Okay, Cara Mia! We will discuss all this later. Your body needs all the rest in the world,” He answered in a defeated tone, and with this, he left my room. “He is out of his damn mind if he thinks that I will stay with him for the rest of my life,” I uttered under my breath, like he could hear me through the closed doors. “I can’t afford any other injury like this, but I also can’t stay here with these wild beasts. I have to contact my department as soon as possible,” I reminded myself before closing my eyes. I tried to move to my previous position but failed. My eyelids turned heavy and with this, I drifted into deep slumber once again. But I felt like someone entered in the room. "You belong to us, Mio Fiore... Only us," and it wasn't Joseph's voice at all. But, the voice gave me goosebumps of fear and anxiety.
