Chapter 1 The day I saw her
Mattheo had always walked the line between power and danger, but tonight, there was something different in the air. After paying respects to a man he had killed, he shared a brief nod and high-five with his brother. “Well, that takes care of our little problem,” his brother said. Mattheo didn’t speak—his eyes were already elsewhere. She was there. Not just beautiful—goddess-like. Dark black hair framed her face perfectly, and her purple eyes glimmered even in the moonlight. Damn… he muttered under his breath. “Hey, I’ll see you around,” he said, almost to himself. He approached her carefully, placing flowers on a grave nearby. Every movement, every breath she took, seemed to mesmerize him. My God… who are you? The way the sun hits your hair… Are you here for me? You were made for me. His hand ran through his hair, a deep sigh escaping as he imagined her lips against his. She began to walk away. A small book slipped from her grasp. Instinctively, Mattheo sprinted, scooping it up. “Excuse me… you dropped this, sweetheart,” he called. Raven turned, cheeks flushed. “Thank you very much.” “You’re welcome. Sorry—how rude of me. I’m Mattheo.” “I’m Raven,” she said shyly, still blushing. “Thanks for returning my book.” Mattheo watched her leave the cemetery, every step etched in his mind. Back in his black Mustang, he started the engine and followed her quietly, never breaking the distance. Raven’s evening led her to a coffee shop, where she ordered an iced coffee and smiled softly as she sipped. Outside, a group of men began to catcall her. Mattheo’s hand flicked in a subtle gesture. The men nodded and retreated, leaving Raven to slip into a bookstore. Inside, Mattheo observed her from across the aisle. Raven… my goodness. Reading horror, romance… every character she dreams of, I could be. Every fantasy… mine to become. He knocked over a book intentionally, rushing to grab it and brushing her hand gently. “Sorry… thank you,” he said. “Oh, it’s you,” she murmured, recognizing him. “Hi again,” he said, a warm smile playing on his lips. “I need to pay for this. Bye,” she said, showing him the book she had been reading. “Wait… do you remember my name?” Mattheo asked. Raven nodded, cheeks flushed. “Goodbye, Mattheo.” He followed her discretely as she walked through the city—stopping at the theater, the grocery store—his presence unseen but constant. When chaos erupted with a sudden gunshot, Raven froze. Mattheo moved instantly, grabbing her and pulling her close. “Shhh… follow me,” he whispered. Tears streamed down her cheeks as they fled to his car. “You’re safe, sweetie,” he said gently as she struggled to calm herself. “I’m sorry,” she murmured, embarrassed. Mattheo’s voice was soft, reassuring. “Come on, I’ll drive you home.” She nodded, still shaken, and slid into the car beside him. Along the way, his mind raced. Smart girl… baby girl… don’t worry. I’m here to protect you, to guide you. No one will touch you while I’m around. Outside her home, he stepped out and lit a cigarette, watching her through the window as she read late into the night. Eventually, sleep claimed her, curled on the couch, a book still in hand. Mattheo blew her a soft kiss and returned to his car, driving into the night, thoughts consumed entirely by her.The next morning, Raven awoke to the soft sunlight filtering through her curtains. The events of the previous night—the gunshot, the panic, the stranger who had saved her—played on a loop in her mind. Her heart still raced at the memory of Mattheo’s presence, both terrifying and strangely comforting. She shook her head, trying to dismiss it. It’s just a coincidence… he’s probably gone. But Mattheo was far from gone. From his sleek black Mustang parked down the street, he watched her apartment, eyes sharp, calculating. Every movement she made was a note in the symphony he had begun composing—one that revolved entirely around her. He smirked as he picked up his phone, dialing a number. “I need a full background on Raven. Every detail—school, work, habits, everything. I want to know her world before she even knows I exist.” Minutes later, a fax arrived. Mattheo scanned the sheets, memorizing her routine, her small joys, her solitude. No family, no siblings, no one watching over her. Perfect. He saved her home number into his phone and placed it carefully—like a map to the next step in his plan. Meanwhile, Raven tried to resume her normal routine, though the memory of the gunshot lingered like a shadow. At the café, at the bookstore, even the theater, she felt eyes on her, though she dismissed it as paranoia. Yet, she couldn’t shake the feeling that someone—someone dangerous—was always near. Mattheo followed from a distance, careful, patient, a predator cloaked in charm. When she sang at the open-air theater later that night, the words hit him harder than any bullet could: “The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return.” He gripped the steering wheel, his pulse quickening. Yes… I will be the one you love. I’ll be everything for you, Raven. Later, at the grocery store, he observed the same small gestures—the way she tucked her hair behind her ear, the careful selection of her items, the warmth of her smile to a stranger. And then, the moment that would solidify his plan: the flash of fear when another man approached her. Mattheo’s hand flicked the signal. His men dispersed the threat before she even knew. She hurried inside the bookstore, trembling slightly, unaware of how close she had come to danger. Mattheo approached, calm, collected. “Five minutes, okay?” he whispered to his men, before stepping inside to meet her gaze. Their eyes locked, and the world outside seemed to vanish. She gave him a shy smile, but her unease lingered. Then came the chaos. A sudden shout, a sharp gunshot—the sound splitting the calm evening. Raven screamed, frozen in panic. Instinct took over. Mattheo was there in an instant, shielding her, guiding her to the car. “Shhh… it’s okay. Follow me.” Her tears streaked down her face as they drove through empty streets, away from the danger she couldn’t yet name. “You’re safe now,” he said gently, but there was something beneath the words—a possessiveness, a promise, a warning. Raven’s panic slowly ebbed, replaced by confusion. Who is he? Why do I feel safe… and terrified… all at once? Mattheo parked outside her building, watching through the window as she fell asleep on the couch, still clutching her book. He blew her a soft kiss and returned to his car, heart racing—not with fear, but with anticipation. Tomorrow, she will see more of me. And she will never forget it. As the city slept, Mattheo drove home, mind already planning his next move. Raven was no longer just a girl in his life; she was the axis on which his world would turn. Every thought, every breath, every action he would take—centered on her.
