Chapter 4, The bond of family

Suddenly, the flames in the fireplace flickered, then flared slightly. All four adults stilled. Selene made a sound, not a cry but a hum. The air shifted. Jonathan’s expression sharpened, instincts rising. “Did you feel that?” Merrick nodded. “I did.” Kaelis looked at Mira. “That wasn’t just witch magic.” Mira’s gaze dropped to her daughter, her heart tightening—not with fear, but with realisation. “She’s not just both…” Mira whispered. “She’s something new.” Something New The Pact and Prophecy Selene’s silver eye gleamed faintly in the firelight. The amethyst one shimmered like a spell mid-cast. Jonathan straightened, his voice low but certain. “Then she will need protection beyond anything we’ve known.” Merrick stepped closer to the bed, placing a firm hand on Mira’s shoulder. “She’ll have it.” Kaelis nodded. “From both pack and coven.” Mira looked between them all, then back down at her daughter. Selene yawned—perfectly ordinary for a newborn—before settling against her mother, as if none of the weight of their words mattered. Mira let out a soft breath, brushing her lips against Selene’s forehead. “She’ll also have something else,” she said quietly. Jonathan raised a brow. “And that is?” Mira smiled faintly, eyes full of fierce love. “A choice.” The storm outside began to quiet, the thunder rolling further into the distance. But inside the cottage, something far more powerful had just begun. The Weight of Bonds Jonathan’s gaze lingered on Merrick a moment longer, something unspoken passing between them…. He remembered, Merrick had not always stood this tall, this certain. There had been a time when he was just a boy—grief-stricken, with loss, and far too silent for a child, Merrick’s father had fallen in battle, giving his life to protect the Alpha—an act of loyalty that bound their fates forever. And his mother… Kaelis’s expression softened, as if feeling the memory surface, “The bond…” she murmured quietly. Mira looked up. “The mating bond?” Kaelis nodded. “When a werewolf loses their mate… it is not like other grief.” Jonathan’s voice lowered. “It breaks something fundamental. The bond is not just emotional—it is life itself.” Merrick stood still, his jaw tightening slightly, though his eyes remained on Selene. “My mother didn’t die from illness,” he said quietly. “She died from the breaKing of the mate bond.” The room fell into a respectful silence. Mira’s heart ached as she looked at him. She reached out, her free hand finding his. “And you were alone?” she asked softly. Merrick shook his head, “No,” he said, glancing toward Jonathan and Kaelis “I wasn’t.” Kaelis smiled gently. “He became ours that day.” Jonathan crossed his arms, though there was warmth behind the gesture. “A son of the pack… in every way that matters. Mira asked Merrick how his father had died. He hesitated before answering, his voice low. Rogues had infiltrated part of the pack’s territory, sparking a brutal battle. Chaos tore through the forest—snarls, steel, and the scent of blood everywhere. In the midst of the fight, one rogue broke through the lines. He carried a silver dagger, its blade laced with wolfsbane and liquid silver—deadly enough to kill an Alpha. Merrick saw it too late. The rogue lunged, aiming straight for Alpha Jonathan’s back. But his father saw. Without hesitation, he rushed forward and threw himself into the strike, taking the dagger meant for the Alpha. The battle ended in victory. The rogues were defeated, suffering heavy losses. But the Blood Pack lost one of their own. Merrick’s father. Not long after, the mating bond between Merrick’s parents was broken. Unable to bear the loss, his mother followed soon after, leaving the world behind. Merrick was only four years old. Alone—yet not truly alone. In a wolf pack, no pup is ever abandoned. Alpha Jonathan and his Luna took me into their home without hesitation, raising me as their own son. They gave me protection, guidance, and a place to belong, even in the shadow of his loss. Merrick huffed a quiet breath, something between a laugh and emotion. “They didn’t have to take me in.” Kaelis stepped closer, placing a hand briefly on his arm. “Yes, we did.” Jonathan added firmly, “Your father gave his life for me. There was never another path.” Mira looked between them, understanding settling in. “This is why the bond matters so much to your kind,” she said. Jonathan nodded. “Werewolves can live centuries. But we are not meant to live them alone.” Kaelis continued, her tone thoughtful. “And the bond does not care for species. It forms between souls—werewolf, witch, fae, even human.” Mira’s eyes dropped to Selene again. “A bond between worlds…” she whispered. Merrick gently brushed his thumb across Selene’s tiny hand. “Just like her.” Selene stirred slightly, her mismatched eyes fluttering open again amethyst and silver catching the light. Jonathan studied her carefully. “A child born of two powerful lineages… and into a world were bonds shape destiny.” Kaelis smiled faintly. “She may change more than just your lives.” Mira held her daughter closer, protective instinct rising strong and steady. “Then we will make sure the world is worthy of her.” Merrick looked at Mira, something fierce and unwavering in his expression. “And if it isn’t,” he said quietly, “we’ll make it so.” Outside, the last of the storm faded completely leaving only stillness, and the quiet beginning of something far greater than any of them yet understood.
