Chapter 5, Mira’s parents arrive

525 Words
It was a hard knock at the door. Merrick knew who it was. He went to the front door opened it and then Merrick stepped aside, closing the door gently behind them as the last whisper of wind faded outside. Raven and Marcus Mira’s parents had arrived. Warmth filled the cottage again—this time not just from the fire, but from family. Raven moved first, her steps quick but careful, her eyes already fixed on Mira. The moment she reached her daughter, she cupped Mira’s face in her hands, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. “My brave girl,” she whispered. Mira smiled, her exhaustion softened by comfort. “I’m alright, Mother.” Marcus followed, slower but no less emotional. He rested a firm, steady hand on Mira’s shoulder, his gaze full of pride. “You’ve done something extraordinary,” he said. Then Raven’s attention shifted, To the child, To Selene. She leaned closer, and the moment her eyes fell on the baby’s face—those mismatched, glowing eyes—her breath caught sharply. “Oh…” she whispered, barely audible Marcus stepped beside her, his arm brushing hers as he looked down as well. For a long second, neither of them spoke. Then Raven reached out, her fingers trembling slightly as Selene’s tiny hand instinctively curled around one of them. “She’s… radiant,” Raven said, voice thick with emotion, Marcus exhaled slowly, something deeper than awe settling into his expression. “She is more than that.” The room grew still again. Merrick stepped closer to Mira, his presence grounding, protective. Marcus lifted his gaze, looKing at each of them in turn—Jonathan, Kaelis, Merrick, Mira. “There are children born with power,” he said steadily. “And there are children born into destiny.” His eyes returned to Selene, “She is both.” A Unified Vow Kaelis inclined her head slightly. “We felt it the moment we entered.” Jonathan’s expression hardened—not with fear but resolve. “Power like hers will not go unnoticed.” Raven straightened slightly, though her hand never left Selene’s. “Then it is not just a blessing,” she said quietly. “It is a responsibility.” Mira tightened her hold on her daughter, instinct rising like a shield. “She is still just a child.” “And she will be allowed to be one,” Merrick said firmly, his voice carrying a low, protective edge. Marcus gave a single approving nod. “Good.” He stepped closer, placing a hand briefly on Merrick’s shoulder—this time not just pride, but recognition. “You were raised well,” he said. “Now you will raise her.” Merrick met his gaze without hesitation. “With everything I have.” Raven smiled softly through her emotion. “She will never stand alone.” Kaelis added gently, “Not with pack and coven both at her side.” Jonathan crossed his arms, his presence steady as stone. “Anyone who threatens her… threatens all of us.” Silence followed—but it was not heavy. It was unified.
