Prologue
What happens when your pack has no Alpha? No Beta? The Silver Moon pack was once led by the noble Alpha Drake and his Beta Damien. A few short weeks ago, a routine border patrol went bad. The Alpha and Beta were training a newly phased group of Gammas on patrolling the territory when they were attacked by a vicious group of rogues. Only one Gamma survived, but barely. She was covered in wounds and could barely tell the pack doctor what had happened before she passed out. The Silver Moon pack formed an alliance with our neighbors, the Blood Red pack to annihilate the rogues. Blood Red offered our pack refuge, but the Silver Moon pack is one of the oldest of our kind and we did not want to submit to an outside Alpha. The Alpha Games are an ancient tradition in our world that haven’t been held in over 600 years. If an Alpha’s leadership is challenged by 2/3 of the pack or if an Alpha dies before choosing a Beta, the Alpha Games can be held to choose a new Alpha bloodline. Our pack has only ever had male Alphas because they have always been the strongest. But I will be playing in the Alpha Games now, and I play to win.
My name is Raven and I am 19 years old. I am a bit young for an Alpha, but I know I am strong enough to compete in the games. I know I can win and bring our pack back to full strength. Female wolves have competed in the games before, according to our legends, but have never made it to the final round. There are 4 rounds total, and whoever is left standing at the end becomes our new Alpha. I may be only a Gamma, but I know I have a deep strength inside of me that burns to be released. My wolf, Spirit, is jet black and one of the biggest in our pack. It’s almost unheard of for a female wolf to be as large as Spirit. I have always been faster, more agile and more aggressive than the other Gammas. This is how I know I will win.
The surrounding packs are preparing to arrive to watch the Games. We have one week to prepare for their arrival and train to win. The Games are open to any wolf in the pack, even the lowest Omegas and oldest elders. So far, only 23 pack members have put their names in the lottery. The Games can be dangerous, and some pack members will die trying to become Alpha. Not to mention the wolf that wins might not even accept the change. There is a legend from the beginning of our pack, almost 1,000 years ago that tells of a wolf named Em who won the Games and tried to take his place as Alpha. When he drank from the ceremonial goblet at his initiation ceremony, his wolf couldn’t handle the change and he died. Ever since then the Games have only been played by the toughest wolves.
