Chapter 1
“You stupid bastard! You can't do anything well, why are you so dumb?” An angry man threw tantrums in my presence. “Stupid woman.”
I opened my eyes in a rush and took deep breaths. What was happening? Where was I? Was I dreaming?”
These questions kept ringing in my head. I tried to sit up but I couldn't, my back ached and my eyes were trying to shut down. I didn't know what the problem was, but I wasn't in a familiar place; so I tried to figure out where this strange place was.
I saw a man dressed in a doctor's attire attend to the next person to me. He went ahead to ask the man on the bed if he was okay, and the man said yes.
Then I saw a write up with the heading. “Take care of your health.” That was when I found out that I was in the hospital. What would I be doing in a hospital? I wondered.
There were no nurses around to ask questions, so I shut my eyes as I tried to remember the reason I was admitted to the hospital.
“Why aren't you already cooking the food?” It was my mother in law, Luna Isabella. “You should always be submissive and at your husband's service.”
I had just come back from work and I was very tired. My husband, Alpha Lucas, was on the coach. He was back from the company a few hours ago.
“I'm sorry, mother. I'll do that as quickly as possible.” I answered, trying to prepare the quickest meal so my husband could eat.
“She's so dumb, mother.” Alpha Lucas commented from where he sat.
I didn't respond to whatever they said, afterall I was used to being called names. I was sweating but I didn't have time to rest.
“You should always cook your husband's meal, everyday.” She screamed at me. “You should take care of us. You are his wife! Why did you have to marry her?” She asked her son.
“She was just the available one. I don't know what got into me.” My husband answered.
Suddenly I opened my eyes, taking deep breaths again. The nurse was checking up on me.
“How long have I been here?” I asked with my weak voice. I couldn't even turn to see her properly.
“For days now.”
“Who brought me here?”
“A young lady.”
I knew she was talking about Amy, my younger sister. She has been the one taking care of me for so long even when I found out I had cancer.
“Did she come today?”
“No.”
I was disappointed but glad at the same time because I was going to meet her. It gave me some hope. I still had someone in this world that cared about me.
I felt really bad that I didn't listen to her when she advised me against this marriage. She had told me times without number that she knew Alpha Lucas wasn't good for me, but I simply ignored her.
I had loved this man from the depth of my heart, I practically put my life on pause for him but he didn't even regard me. He would look me in my eyes and tell me how stupid I was or how he regretted getting married to me.
I was simply living a bad life.
I still couldn't remember what led to my being in this hospital so I closed my eyes again, hoping to recall.
“Karla! Karla!”
I heard my name being shouted multiple times at that house but this time around, it was louder and more aggressive and it was my husband calling.
“Why are you so wicked?” He questioned me.
“What do you mean? I'm confused.”
“You didn't clean mother's room and you didn't prepare her food?” He was furious and I understood that, because I was the one who always did the housework.
“I'm sorry, I wasn’t feeling alright.” I explained to him. I didn't expect him to understand me even though I had told him earlier today that I was going to the hospital.
He knew I had cancer, he knew I wasn't feeling okay, but he simply didn't care.
“How is that any of my business if you're okay or not? I only ask you to take care of my mother. Is that too much to ask?” He turned, frustrated with me. “Such a dummy.”
Then, my sister arrived and volunteered to help clean the room.
“Most times, I wonder if you guys are siblings really. You are doing much better than she is, you know.” My husband complimented my sister, and I watched her smile.
“You know, Karla isn't like that, she's slow sometimes but she's also hardworking.” Amy answered, then glanced at me.
She was my savior
“I told him I was sick..” I tried to explain to them both.
“That's not enough reason to leave my mother hungry. Or is it?” His screams startled me as I felt pain in my stomach. “Go to the kitchen, at least help your sister. She volunteered to clean. Why don't you cook? Go now.” My husband pushed me towards the kitchen.
“Easy.” Amy said, but she stood there and did nothing.
“Amy is so much better than you. Go to the kitchen.” He didn't stop pushing until I fell to the ground, unconscious.
I jerked up again from the hospital bed waking up once again from another nightmare.
“You're awake!” It was Amy, she was next to me. “I waited for you to wake up.”
“Amy.” My voice trailed off.
There my sister was sitting, waiting for me with my hands in hers. I smiled at her and she returned the smile. It was all so beautiful.
“How are you?” She asked.
“I am doing good” I told her, not letting her hands go.
“You're shaking.” She said, helping me sit up. She gave me a comforting hug. “Everything will be fine.” She taps my back slowly and quietly.
“I have been calling Lucas and he hasn't been picking my calls.” I told her as she fed me some food.
“I think he is busy.” She simply said, acting rather not interested in the discussion.
“I think I was wrong to marry him.” I replied, opening my mouth occasionally to receive the food given to me by Amy. “My mother just treats me like I don't exist.”
“I just want you to rest, okay?”
I nodded and thanked God for my sister. She was the best gift I had received.
“I'll go on to go home to rest.” She hugged and kissed me goodbye when she was ready to go. She seemed to be in a hurry.
When she had gone, it was time for me to finally receive my third medication for the day. The doctor rather than the nurse came in this time, not smiling.
“Miss Karla, you will be taken out of medication if you do not pay your hospital bills. I would advise you to call your friends and family and request they make the payment; or your medications will be suspended.” He said. “I know it is hard but we can't keep working like this.”
I understood what the doctor was trying to say. I have been at the hospital for months now and neither my husband nor his mother had decided to come see me. It was the money I had worked for that I used to make the initial payment.
I tried his number one more time, but he didn't answer his calls. Just as expected!
I needed to help myself, so I put off my hospital clothes, got dressed and in minutes was on my way to the house where I was despised so much.
