Betrayal
The opulent yet desolate villa living room was steeped in a palpable stillness. Eleanor Su lay curled weakly on the expensive leather sofa, waves of agonizing pain from her chest making it hard to breathe. Her pale fingers clutched desperately at the fabric over her heart. Just yesterday, she had been thinking of her half-sister, Lillian, worrying that her own failing body couldn't bear the weight of the conglomerate's responsibilities. She had even willingly signed those documents transferring her inheritance rights, effectively giving up everything. She had naively believed that bonds of blood outweighed all worldly wealth, never imagining that her kindness would be met with such a swift and blatant betrayal. "Medicine... give me..." Eleanor managed to squeeze out a faint plea from between her clenched teeth, her vision already beginning to blur. She looked at the face before her, so familiar yet now so alien, a pathetic shred of hope still lingering in her heart—a hope that over a decade of care and affection might stir even a sliver of mercy in the other. Lillian looked down at her, a cold, stunning smile curling her lips. Unhurriedly, she took the familiar small white pill bottle from her handbag. As she saw the fleeting light of hope in Eleanor's eyes ignite and then just as quickly die out, Lillian tilted her wrist, pouring all the pills inside into the nearby metal trash can. The sound they made was crisp and utterly hopeless. "Sister, don't blame me," Lillian's voice was as sweet as ever, yet laced with venom. "Blame this broken body of yours for not lasting until tomorrow. Don't worry, when you're gone, everyone will simply lament that the Su family's eldest daughter was ill-fated." She leaned down, like a venomous snake whispering its poison, close to Eleanor's ear. "By the way, do you know why Theodore suddenly postponed the wedding? Weren't those photos of you and that trusted bodyguard of his, the ones showing your 'private dealings,' especially vivid?" Eleanor shuddered violently. Her scattered gaze abruptly sharpened with a final, cold light. In this momentary clarity brought by a final surge of life, the heart-wrenching pain seemed to briefly recede, granting her a moment of lucidity. Her voice was hoarse but clear: "Those photos... using forced perspective... it was you... you set me up!" "Correct!" Lillian straightened up, her face unabashedly proud and filled with jealousy and resentment. "It was a 'gift' from me and your dear bodyguard, An Yu. What right did you have to win Theodore's favor? A sickly woman clinging to life, how are you worthy of standing by his side? The position of Mrs. Theodore should have been mine all along!" An Yu... Even he... Eleanor felt the last vestiges of warmth in her heart dissolve. A chill more piercing than any illness instantly swept through her entire being. In a single day, family, love, trust—everything she held dear—had been utterly crushed by the very two people she had least guarded against. She began to laugh, a low, bitter sound filled with boundless self-mockery and sorrow. So this was the truth. Some people were born cold-blooded snakes. Even if you poured all your genuine warmth into them, all you would get in return was a venomous bite of betrayal. Just before her consciousness completely sank into darkness, only one thought remained to Eleanor: If there is a next life, I will surely make these cold-blooded, ungrateful wretches pay a hundredfold!
