CHAPTER FOUR Sadie’s heart was in her mouth as she stared out of the chopper window at the ocean below, feeling a mixture of awe and a primal fear of crashing into the icy, treacherous waters. It was a new feeling for her; as a native Alaskan she was used to the wilds, and as a special agent she was used to danger, but this far north the environment itself seemed hostile, as though they were trespassing. This was no place for humans. “Is it always this crazy?” Sadie asked the pilot without taking her eyes off the expanse of churning water below. The pilot laughed, a dry sound low in his throat. “This is nothing,” he told her. “Especially for this time of year.
