CHAPTER 1
Her face glowed with happiness as she walked through the door leading to the reception of the law firm. Her hair long, wavy, and golden, cascaded down her shoulders. The red dress which hugged her like a second skin stood just an inch above the knee and her heels clicked as she walked on the glass floor. She greeted a few of the employees who went about their businesses with smiles on their faces. Her boss gave her half the day off and she rushed home to make some food for her fiance. She sang throughout the food preparation and carefully selected the red dress. It was David's favorite and she could not wait to see him again. Oh, how she missed him though they spoke in the morning. There were just five days remaining for her to become Mrs. Jones and she couldn't wait for the D-Day. At the door of his office, she stopped and fumbled through her bag for her mirror. She felt satisfied at the image staring back at her and put the mirror back in her bag. She opened the door a c***k and paused when she heard voices coming from the office. She closed the door quietly and pressed her ear against it to eavesdrop. The voice of her fiance was clear and he was pleading. "Please, bear with me. I know it's going to be a hard decision for you but it's for our good. We can't afford to make mistakes. Not now." "I don't care about whatever you want to say. I have already made my decision and it's final." The other voice retorted. She sounded like Jennifer, Ruth thought aloud. What is she even doing here, eavesdropping on a boss and his secretary's conversations, she asked herself. But Jennifer sounded rude. No secretary speaks to her boss in such a manner. She stayed where she was. "I am the one who has the final say on this matter," David's voice was authoritative. "I'm the one carrying the child so I have the final say on this matter, not you!" Jennifer screamed, her face laced with anger. What is she talking about? Is Jennifer pregnant? How? When? Why was she angry at her boss? Did she request a leave and it was denied to her? Jennifer is family and why has she not known that she's pregnant? "Please bring your voice down. You're shouting." David hushed her. "I thought we had already discussed this. Why the sudden change of mind?" "You made your decision, not me. I am not ready to risk my life again for you. I am keeping this child." "You know you can't do that?" "Then watch me do it." "No, you can't. I'll be getting married in five days and…" "How is it any of my business?" She cut in. "You're getting married and I'm keeping my child." "You can't keep the child, Jenny. Please, abort it. I'm begging you." "The child is ours, why do you want me to abort it?" She must have misheard. What did Jennifer mean by the child being theirs? "This is not the first time you've done it for me. For the sake of the love that we have for each other, please abort it." "I want to have your child, David. I refuse to obey you this time." "What will people say?" David asked resignedly. "How would they know if you don't let them know?" Ruth was speechless. She has heard enough. She dropped the bags she came with and pushed the door open, her face white with shock. "You're pregnant?" She asked, her voice barely above a whisper when she found her voice. The duo stared at her, surprise written on their faces. They said nothing but exchanged a brief look between them that spelt-did-she-eavesdrop-on-us? "Did I hear you say that you're pregnant for David?" She asked again and turned to David, her eyes wet as she tried to fight back tears that struggled to escape from her eyes. Jennifer drew back and hung her head down. They still said nothing. "How could you? Dave, how could you? You have been cheating on me all this while? And with whom? Her?" She pointed at Jennifer. "Honey, it's not what you think." David was trying to explain. "Oh please, shut up! It's not what I think. Explain to me what I should think. You haven't been sleeping with her or the child in her womb isn't yours or it is not the first time she's pregnant with your child. Tell me exactly what I should think." Jennifer knelt before her immediately. "Sister, I am sorry. I.." "Sister!" Ruth exclaimed with a bitter smile. "You call me your sister and yet, you stabbed me in the back like this?" She wiped a few tears with the back of her hand. "We did everything for you, Jennifer. We loved you, fed you, clothed you, paid your school fees, got you a job after graduation and this is how you chose to pay us back? I thought you were supposed to be my chief bridesmaid in five days. You didn't tell me you wanted the position of David's bride," she said sarcastically. "You know what," Ruth gulped. "It's over. Whatever this…is." The room became quiet as a graveyard. Ruth removed her engagement ring and threw it to David's face. "It's over! Call your family and tell them that the wedding is canceled!" David knelt before her immediately. "No. Ruth, no. You can't do this. Not now. I'm truly sorry. I lied. I slept with your sister. I'm deeply sorry but please, let's talk about this like two adults. You cannot call off the wedding. It's in five days. You know that I love you and we have come a long way. Honey, please…" "You didn't think about the wedding when you were sleeping with her?" "I will abort it." It was Jennifer, still kneeling with tear-filled eyes. "Sister, please…I am sorry. I'll abort it. You don't have to cancel the wedding. It was a one-time mistake. It wasn't intentional." "Was it once?" Ruth asked. There was silence. "Did you sleep with David just once? I'm sure that wasn't what I heard." Ruth walked to Jennifer briskly and dragged her up. "Look me in the eyes and tell me it's just once." Jennifer hung her head down. A few seconds slipped by. "I'm sorry. It's…it's more than once." She replied at last, quietly. With fury, Ruth turned to David. "Call them right now! Everyone. Your family, the event planner, your friends. Call them! Tell them to put an end to whatever preparations they are making for this…wedding." "Honey, you know I…can't. Please forgive me. It was a mistake. I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. We have come a long way. We can't back out now. Please…please." Ruth brought out her phone and typed in a few words. Click. "Done," she muttered. "What did you do?" David asked and stood up with fear. He checked his phone and his eyes nearly popped out of their sockets.
