My fiancé was dead set on salvaging the reputation of his sweetheart, the woman who'd voluntarily traded s****l favors to advance her career.

So he booked her as a guest on his own talk show.

Worse, to draw heat away from her, he dropped the story of my childhood abuse at the hands of my stepfather for all the world to hear.

As the on-air sign language host for the program, I had to stand there and translate the most agonizing trauma of my childhood for the whole world to see, gesture by gesture, my hands barely shaking, my face a frozen mask of professional neutrality.

All the while, he was dabbing gently at his sweetheart's tears, his tone so warm and gentle you'd think he was comforting a kicked puppy.

"Cutting someone else slack means cutting yourself slack too. Everyone deserves a chance to be forgiven.

"Everyone deserves grace if they own up to their mistakes and turn over a new leaf."

The second I finished my last sign, I tore off my headset with a sharp click and strode straight toward the stage, past the control room director, who was staring at me like I'd grown a second head, his face white with terror.

"Sebastian," my voice was cold and sharp enough to cut glass. "I've got one question for you."

Chapter 1
"Everyone deserves grace if they own up to their mistakes and turn over a new leaf." The second I finished my last sign, I tore off my headset with a sharp click and strode straight toward the stage, past the control room director, who was staring at me like I'd grown a second head, his face white with terror. "Sebastian," my voice was cold and sharp enough to cut glass. "I've got one question for you." …… The director tried to switch the feed away, but I slammed my hand down on his wrist and held it fast. "If any of you don't want a court summons showing up at your door tomorrow, you keep every last second of this streaming." The harsh red on-air light blazed, and the soft, warm smile on Sebastian's face froze in an instant. "How did you even get in he—" My sharp, warning glare locked everyone in the control booth in place. No one dared move a muscle. "Sebastian," I said, "I'm the sign language interpreter for the interviewers on today's program. "Just now, I heard you go into graphic detail about a young girl's childhood experience of being assaulted." My voice shook a little as I spoke the word "assaulted", but my gaze stayed glued to the man in front of me, locked on him like a target. Sebastian tried to yank his wrist free so he could grab my hand, his voice dropping to a furious, urgent hiss. "Don't make a scene here, Shiloh! We can talk about this at home! Do you have any idea this is live TV?" I wrenched my hand out of his grasp, my tone cold enough to ice over the entire studio. "Sebastian, what gave you the right to broadcast her most painful, private trauma for the whole world to see without her permission? "And what gave you the right to speak for her, and forgive the monster that destroyed her entire childhood?" Sebastian's face fell, his composure starting to c***k. "We... we're doing this to raise public awareness—" Dead silence hung over the entire audience. His mouth opened and closed, but no more words came out. Staring at his suddenly ashen face, my mind flashed back to that freezing winter night years ago. I was sixteen, shaking so hard I could barely stand when I walked out of the police station. He had pushed through the crowd straight to me, yanking his heavy coat off and wrapping it tight around my ice-cold shoulders. "Don't be scared," he'd said. He'd squeezed my hand tight, his gaze steady and unshakable as he looked right at me. "I'll make sure you get justice. I promise." Back then, his warmth was the only light I had in the whole dark world. Now? He was the bottomless abyss swallowing every last scrap of that light whole. Candy cut in, her voice soft and sweet as honey. "Miss, Sebastian only had good intentions..." "Good intentions?" I let out a sharp, bitter laugh. The harsh studio lights burned into my eyes, and suddenly I was right back in that awful afternoon. The reek of alcohol in a man's breath fanned across the back of my neck, a rough, calloused hand clamped tight over my mouth to muffle my screams. I was pinned to the old, lumpy couch like a ragged discarded doll, unable to move even an inch. My stepfather's voice was thick and slimy, revolting as he cooed, "Don't fight... be a good girl..." My nails dug so hard into the couch fabric I thought they'd snap. The whole world narrowed down to that crushing, hopeless suffocation. I was hit with a full-body tremor I couldn't control, so strong I nearly stumbled and fell. I bit down hard on my lip to yank myself back to the present, my eyes blazing red with rage as I glared daggers at the man in front of me. "Spreading someone's private trauma without their consent, forgiving their abuser on their behalf. You call that good intentions? "Sebastian, what did you just say? That girl should let that monster go scot-free?" Sebastian's Adam's apple bobbed nervously. "We need to look forward, don't we? Forgiveness doesn't mean forgetting. It's supposed to help the victim move past their trauma." His face paled more and more with every word. He reached out like he wanted to touch me, but I recoiled so hard I nearly tripped over my own feet. I squeezed the microphone so tight my knuckles turned white. "Miss Rourke isn't a victim at all! She knocked on that director's door on her own, chasing fame and fortune! "What about that girl? She was only sixteen! In her own home, the one place she was supposed to be safe, assaulted by that scumbag—" My throat hitched with a sob before I could get the rest of the words out. I dragged in a sharp, ragged breath, then lifted a trembling hand and leveled it straight at Sebastian with every last ounce of strength I had. "How dare you lump a sleazy favors-for-s*x deal together with the brutal assault of a helpless child who couldn't fight back? "How dare you try to whitewash that monster's crimes with that garbage line about 'people can change if they own up to their mistakes'? "You ripped open her still-bleeding wounds just to give that woman next to you a scapegoat for her scandal!" Each sharp, biting question landed like a stinging slap, cracking hard across Sebastian's face. Candy saw the whole situation spiraling fast out of control, and she immediately scowled, sharp and furious. "Cut the feed! Cut the signal right now! This woman is seriously mentally unstable! "Nothing she says is true! She needs a doctor, not a platform to slander innocent people!" In the audience, a bought-and-paid-for reporter jumped at the chance to chime in, yelling at the top of her lungs. "You've got nothing to back this up! Where's your proof? "Who knows if you didn't make the whole thing up just to get famous? You'd stoop to anything for clout, wouldn't you?" I met her flustered, seething glare head-on and let out a sharp, bitter snort of a laugh. "Me? I'm the fiancée of the host standing right next to you!"
