KALEN VEX
(Season 1) CHAPTER 1 Rain hit the floor-to-ceiling windows like fingers tapping glass, waiting to be let in. The penthouse sat 62 floors above the city. Below, Chicago was all neon and noise. Up here? Silence. Cold. Controlled. *KALEN VEX* didn’t sit. He occupied. He was leaned back in a black leather chair, one arm draped over the rest, the other tapping once, twice, against the armrest. Still. Measured. Predator-still. Otherworldly wasn’t a compliment with him. It was a fact. Chiseled jaw that could cut glass. Cheekbones like they’d been carved under moonlight. Full lips that never softened unless he wanted something. But it was the eyes that did the damage. Frosted crystal. Pale, bright, unblinking. The kind of eyes that looked through you, filed you, and decided your worth before you finished breathing. He wore his face like a mask. Handsome, yes. Devastating, yes. But never honest. Every micro-expression was budgeted. Every smile was a calculation. The air around him hummed. Not with electricity. With age. With weight. Ancient power, pressed thin over modern skin. You didn’t meet his gaze because you were brave. You met it because you couldn’t look away, even though some part of your brain screamed _danger_. Moth. Flame. You know how that ends. The double doors opened without a knock. Only one person in the building could do that. *ZOD.* Six-four. Suit tailored to hide the scar tissue. Former spec-ops. Current shadow. Most trusted man in the room, because he was the only one Kalen hadn’t had to kill. Zod’s posture was perfect. As always. But Kalen saw it. The 2% shift. Shoulders a fraction tighter. Jaw set one degree harder. Tension. For a second, Kalen stopped tapping. “What is it,” he said. Voice low. No question in it. A statement that expected an answer. Zod didn’t look at the phone in his hand. He looked at Kalen. “Boss. You got a call.” Kalen’s gaze didn’t move off him. “Who.” A beat. “Mr. Griffin.” Zod hesitated. Just half a second. Long enough. “He wants to talk about the deal you pulled out of.” The name landed like a stone in still water. Griffin. Real estate on paper. Money laundering, weapons brokering, and ‘acquisitions’ off it. The man who’d tried to push Kalen into a port deal three months ago. The deal Kalen walked from after he saw the trap underneath the contract. Zod remembered how long it took to convince him to back out without blood on the carpet. Days. Arguments. Kalen didn’t like being told no. He liked blood even less when it was messy. Kalen let out a sound. Not a laugh. A humorless _chuckle_, short and cold. He tilted his head up, eyes locking with Zod’s. “Set a meeting with him. Instead.” Zod didn’t move. “But—” Kalen cut him off with a look. No words. He didn’t need them. “I am not stupid, Zod.” His voice didn’t rise. It didn’t have to. “I will not do anything unless it’s necessary. So don’t give me that look.” That was the warning. _Don’t question. Don’t die trying to protect me from myself._ Zod held for three seconds. Then he dipped his head. “Okay, boss. I’ll do just that.” He turned, walked to the door. Professional. Loyal. Still alive. The doors clicked shut. Kalen leaned back again. Chair creaking once. He stared past his own reflection in the glass, past the rain, past the city. His mind was already working. _Griffin doesn’t call. Griffin sends lawyers. Griffin sends threats. Griffin doesn’t ask for a meeting unless he thinks he has leverage._ So what was it? A new trap? A buyer he wanted to show off? Or was Griffin scared? A smile ghosted over Kalen’s lips. Barely there. Barely human. How many men before Griffin had tried to fool him? Corner him? Think they could read the vampire prince because they’d read a few finance books? They never ended well. Kalen had been in rooms with CEOs, cartel liaisons, senators, killers. Inside the business world. Outside of it. He didn’t need to hear you lie. He watched your hands. The blink rate. The way your weight shifted when you were cornered. Human psychology, weaponized. He studied you the way a surgeon studies a body. Every twitch was data. Every pause was confession. Rain kept hitting the glass. Chicago kept breathing below him. And Kalen Vex kept calculating. Because if Griffin wanted a meeting… Then Griffin was already losing. TBC
