Light in the Dark
Light in the Dark* ‎*Chapter 1 ‎ ‎I met her where I lived most days: in the dark. Not just night-dark. The kind of dark that sits in your chest and makes everything quiet. My “whole place” was just walls, old thoughts, and silence. ‎ ‎Then she smiled. ‎ ‎I didn’t see her face at first. Just the smile. It slipped through the dark like someone cracked a door open. And just like that, the whole place lit up. Corners I forgot existed. Dust I stopped noticing. Even the air felt warmer. ‎ ‎She didn’t drag me out of my void. She just woke me up in it. Her voice, her laugh, the way she meant every word — she made me remember what it felt like to want mornings again. Now she’s everything I think about. I forget myself when she’s near. My name, my worries, my old dark — all of it goes quiet. ‎ ‎She’s truth. Clean, simple, no games. All she ever asks is to smile. That’s it. Smile, and her whole world feels safe. ‎ ‎But I’m a fool. ‎ ‎For the first time in our life, I lied to her. A small lie. A stupid lie. I told myself it didn’t matter. But it did. The second it left my mouth, the light flickered. And I hated myself instantly. Not because she got angry. Because I did that to _her_. To the one person who turned my dark into a place worth living in. ‎ ‎I’m not sure a fool like me deserves her smile. But I’m sure of this: I’d spend every day after earning it back, just to see that light come back on. ‎ ‎Got it. You want it longer. Let’s keep building this novel together, one chapter at a time. ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Before her, mornings were punishment. The light through the window felt like an accusation. _You’re still here. You didn’t fix yourself yet._ I’d pull the blanket over my head and count my breaths until breathing felt normal again. ‎ ‎But that morning? ‎ ‎That morning was different. I woke up and the first thought wasn’t _another day_. It was _she exists_. Three words. Simple. But they hit my chest like warm water. I sat up slow, like if I moved too fast the feeling would break. The room looked the same. Same chipped paint. Same window I never opened. Same silence. ‎ ‎Except the silence wasn’t empty now. It was waiting. ‎ ‎I got up. My feet hit the cold floor and I actually noticed it. Cold. Before, I wouldn’t have felt it. I’d be numb to it. But numb was gone. She took it with her smile. ‎ ‎I walked to the window. My hand touched the latch. I hesitated. Opening windows meant letting things in. Noise. Light. People. Expectations. I was good at keeping all that out. But her smile… it made “in” feel less scary than “out” did. ‎ ‎So I opened it. ‎ ‎Port Harcourt air came in. Humid, heavy, with the smell of rain that didn’t fall yet and smoke from someone’s morning fire. A bike passed outside. A woman was bargaining for tomatoes two compounds over. Life. Ordinary, messy life. And for the first time in I don’t know how long, I didn’t want to close the window on it. ‎ ‎I made tea. Water boiled. The kettle whistled. I used to hate that sound. Too loud. Too much. That morning I stood there and listened to the whole thing. From the first bubble to the last whistle. Because she taught me that small things could be loud if you were actually there to hear them. ‎ ‎I didn’t have her number. I didn’t have her name. I didn’t even know if I’d see her again. But she was everything I thought about while the tea steeped. The way her voice didn’t shake. The way she meant every word. The way she didn’t try to drag me out of the dark — she just lit it up from inside so I could see my own feet again. ‎ ‎I caught myself smiling at the cup. Just… smiling. At tea. At steam. At nothing. And then I remembered: she only ever asks for one thing. Smile. That’s it. Her whole world is safe if you smile. ‎ ‎So I did. In my empty kitchen, with no one watching, I smiled. And for 3 seconds, my dark place felt like a home. ‎ ‎The rest of the day was weird. I forgot myself a lot. I’d be mid-thought, mid-worry, and then her voice would cut through it. Not words. Just the tone. That low, sure tone. And my brain would go quiet. My worries would go quiet. My name would go quiet.
