Chapter 1 The Night The King Fell
The first gunshot didn't echo.
It was swallowed by the orchestra.
Crystal chandeliers illuminated the grand ballroom of Villa Caravelli as politicians, businessmen, and mafia leaders raised their glasses in celebration. Laughter drifted through the air, disguising secrets worth millions.
At the center of it all stood Don Lorenzo Caravelli.
Dressed in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, the aging patriarch accepted another handshake with the effortless authority of a man who had ruled Italy's underground for nearly three decades.
To the world, he was a respected businessman.
To those who truly knew him...
He was the king no one dared challenge.
A waiter approached with a glass of aged whiskey.
"Don Caravelli."
Lorenzo accepted it with a nod.
From the second-floor balcony, hidden behind the velvet curtains, a pair of cold eyes watched every movement.
The crosshairs settled on the Don's chest.
A finger tightened around the trigger.
The orchestra reached its crescendo.
Bang.
The crystal glass slipped from Lorenzo's fingers.
For one impossible second, no one understood what had happened.
Then...
Blood blossomed across the white fabric of his shirt.
The Don staggered backward.
Another shot rang out.
Chaos erupted.
Women screamed.
Men reached beneath their jackets for concealed weapons.
Tables overturned.
Bodyguards flooded the ballroom.
"Protect the Don!"
Cassian Caravelli caught his father before he hit the marble floor.
"Dad..."
Lorenzo's breathing became ragged.
His eyes searched the room desperately.
Not for his soldiers.
Not for his advisers.
For his children.
"Serafina..."
Serafina Caravelli froze.
The world around her became a blur of terrified faces and gunfire.
She dropped to her knees beside her father, her trembling hands pressing against the wound as though she could stop the blood from escaping.
"No..." she whispered.
"No... please... stay with me"
Her hands pressed desperately against the wound, but warm blood continued to slip between her fingers.
"Someone call an ambulance!"
"We already did!"
Within minutes, the ballroom transformed into a battlefield.
Security teams locked every entrance.
No one was allowed to leave.
Every guest became a suspect.
Outside the villa, armed guards searched the surrounding vineyards while helicopters circled overhead, but the shooter had already disappeared into the darkness.
Inside an armored convoy, Lorenzo was rushed toward the Caravelli family's private hospital.
The ride was silent except for the sound of the heart monitor.
Beep...
Beep...
Beep...
Serafina held her father's hand.
It was growing colder.
Across from her, Cassian's suit was stained with blood.
His father's blood.
He stared at it without blinking.
One of the guards answered a ringing phone before quietly handing it to him.
"Sir..."
Cassian took the phone.
"This is Cassian."
A familiar voice spoke from the other end.
It belonged to one of the family's captains.
"Word is already spreading."
Cassian's expression hardened.
"How?"
"The guests are calling their families.
Other Houses know Don Lorenzo has been shot."
"So lock everything down."
"We already have."
There was a brief pause before the captain added quietly,
"...Some of our allies are refusing to answer our calls."
Cassian slowly looked at his unconscious father.
He understood exactly what that meant.
The wolves had smelled blood.
The convoy screeched to a halt outside Caravelli Medical Center.
Doctors and nurses rushed forward with a stretcher.
"Clear the way!"
The emergency room doors burst open.
Doctors disappeared inside with Lorenzo as nurses gently stopped Serafina from following.
"I'm his daughter!"
"You can't go in."
"But—"
"We need room to work."
The operating room doors slammed shut.
A red light above the entrance switched on.
SURGERY IN PROGRESS.
Minutes later, Luciana Caravelli arrived outside the operating room.
The elegant black gown she had worn to the gala was no longer pristine, its fabric creased from the night's chaos, yet she paid no attention to it.
Her eyes immediately found the glowing red light above the operating theatre.
She stopped walking.
For a brief moment, it felt as though the world had gone silent.
Her husband... the man she had loved for nearly three decades... was fighting for his life behind those doors.
She closed her eyes, drawing in a shaky breath before forcing herself to stand tall.
Now was not the time to fall apart.
Serafina turned the moment she saw her mother.
Without a word, Luciana walked over and wrapped an arm around her daughter, gently pulling her close.
"We have to be strong," she whispered, though her own voice trembled.
Serafina nodded against her mother's shoulder, unable to speak.
A few steps away, Cassian stood frozen, his gaze fixed on the operating room doors.
Luciana reached out and took his hand.
For the first time since the shooting, the three of them stood together—not as the family of Italy's most feared Don...
...but as a wife, a son, and a daughter praying that the man they loved would walk back through those doors.
Minutes passed, Cassian's phone vibrated, he ignored it.
It rang again.
Then again.
Soon, the screen lit up with missed calls from every corner of Italy.
Cassian stared at the operating room doors.
For the first time in his twenty-seven years...
He prayed.
Not as the heir to a mafia empire.
But as a son who wasn't ready to lose his father.
Behind those doors...
Doctors fought to save the life of Italy's most feared Don.
Outside...
A different battle had already begun.
