When Wolves Cross the Threshold

1242 Words
“They’re close.” The words still rang in the air when the first tremor hit. Low. Subtle. But enough to make the marble beneath my feet hum. I stilled. “What was that?” No one answered. They didn’t need to. Because a second later— It came again. Stronger. Closer. The court shifted instantly. Not chaos. Not panic. Precision. Guards moved into position, silent and fast. Nobles stepped back, forming a wider circle. Power settled into the room like a storm about to break. Kael didn’t move. But something about him changed. It wasn’t visible—not exactly. But I felt it. The cold in the room deepened. Sharpened. Dangerous. “They’re not waiting for permission,” someone murmured. “They never do,” another replied. My pulse raced. “They can’t just walk into your kingdom,” I said, looking at Kael. “They can,” he said calmly. “And they will.” The same words again. But now— They felt real. A loud c***k split through the hall. The massive doors at the far end shuddered. Once. Twice— Then slammed open. The sound echoed like thunder. Every head turned. Every body stilled. And then— They stepped inside. Not one. Not two. A group. Strong. Silent. Dominant. And at the front— Him. Golden eyes. Unmistakable. My breath caught. He looked exactly the same. And completely different. Wilder. Sharper. More dangerous. Like he belonged here just as much as Kael did. Like he didn’t care whose territory he was in. His gaze locked onto mine instantly. Not scanning. Not searching. Certain. Like he had always known exactly where I would be. The mark on my wrist burned. Hard. A gasp slipped past my lips before I could stop it. “Of course,” someone muttered behind me. The wolves didn’t bow. Didn’t slow. Didn’t hesitate. They walked straight into the center of the court— Like they owned it. Kael finally moved. One step forward. Enough. The air shifted instantly. Cold met heat. Control met instinct. Silence tightened. “Bold,” Kael said. His voice was calm. Too calm. The golden-eyed man stopped just a few feet away. Close enough to feel. Far enough to challenge. “You took what’s mine.” The words landed hard. Clear. Unapologetic. A ripple moved through the court. My heart slammed against my ribs. “I didn’t take anything,” Kael replied coolly. “You removed her without permission.” “I don’t require it.” The tension snapped tighter. The wolves behind him shifted slightly—subtle, but ready. The court mirrored it. Poised. Prepared. Waiting. I stood frozen between them. Again. Like I was the center of something I didn’t understand. “You shouldn’t have brought her here,” the golden-eyed man said. “And yet,” Kael replied, “here she is.” Their gazes clashed. Power pressing against power. “You’re putting her in danger.” “I’m keeping her alive.” “She doesn’t belong to you.” “She doesn’t belong to you either.” The words hit. Hard. Final. Silence followed. Then— The golden-eyed man stepped closer. One step. Deliberate. Dangerous. The guards tensed instantly. Kael didn’t move. Neither did I. Because I couldn’t. Because the moment he got closer— The pull hit again. Stronger. Wilder. Like something inside me was reaching for him. My breath hitched. He noticed. Of course he did. His gaze softened— Just slightly. Enough to feel it. “You felt it,” he said quietly. My throat went dry. “I don’t—” “Don’t lie.” The words weren’t harsh. They were certain. My chest tightened. Because— He wasn’t wrong. I had felt it. Since the moment I saw him. “Step back,” Kael said. The temperature in the room dropped instantly. The golden-eyed man didn’t look away from me. “She’s coming with me.” “No.” “She doesn’t belong here.” “She’s not leaving.” The tension snapped. Sharp enough to cut. “She doesn’t get a say?” the wolf asked, finally glancing at Kael. “She does,” Kael replied. “Then let her choose.” The words landed. Heavy. For the first time— The room shifted toward me. Not just watching. Waiting. My pulse spiked. “You want me to choose?” I asked. The golden-eyed man looked at me again. Fully. “Come with me.” The words were simple. But they carried weight. Promise. Possession. Something deeper. My breath caught. Then— I looked at Kael. His expression didn’t change. “You stay,” he said. Not a request. A command. And suddenly— The pull between them felt different. Not just power. Not just tension. But something else. Something that ran through me. Through the mark. Through whatever this bond was. They weren’t just fighting each other. They were pulling me in opposite directions. And for the first time— I felt it clearly. The choice. Not forced. Not taken. Mine. My hands clenched at my sides. My mind raced. Stay. Go. Neither felt safe. Neither felt right. But both— Felt inevitable. “This is insane,” I whispered. “Choose,” the wolf said softly. My heart pounded. “I don’t even know you.” “You will.” The same words. Different voice. Same certainty. I looked between them again. At the tension. At the court. At the way everything seemed to hinge on this moment. And suddenly— I understood something. This wasn’t just about where I went. It was about what I became. What they thought I was. What I might be. My breath steadied. Just slightly. “I’m not choosing between you,” I said. Silence fell. Sharp. Immediate. The wolf’s jaw tightened. Kael’s gaze darkened. “Then you choose neither,” Kael said. “Yes.” The word came out stronger than I expected. “I’m not leaving with him,” I added, glancing at the wolf. “And I’m not staying because you told me to.” The court stilled. Completely. Because this— This wasn’t expected. The golden-eyed man exhaled slowly. Not anger. Not quite. Something else. “You think you have time for that,” he said quietly. My stomach twisted. “What does that mean?” Before he could answer— The mark flared. Violent. Blinding. A sharp cry tore from my throat as energy surged through me, stronger than anything I’d felt before. Not just pain. Power. Raw. Uncontrolled. The air cracked. The ground trembled. And suddenly— Everyone moved. Guards stepped forward. Wolves shifted. Kael grabbed my arm— And everything exploded. Light burst outward from me. Wild. Uncontrolled. Forcing everyone back. The room shook. Voices rose. Chaos— For the first time. And in the middle of it— I stood there. Breathing hard. Heart racing. Hands trembling. Because whatever had just happened— Wasn’t normal. Wasn’t small. Wasn’t something I could ignore. Silence fell again. Slow. Heavy. Uncertain. Every eye turned back to me. Not questioning. Not doubting. Knowing. And suddenly— The truth settled in. Not fully. Not clearly. But enough. I wasn’t just the reason they were fighting. I wasn’t just the center of this. I was the problem. The power. The thing none of them could control. And maybe— The reason none of this was going to end peacefully.
