The Night It Found Me
The night everything changed…
started like it was trying to stay ordinary.
It didn’t.
I felt it before I saw it.
A pull.
Deep. Sharp. Wrong.
Like something inside me had just woken up—and didn’t like being ignored.
I stopped walking.
The forest around me was too quiet.
No insects.
No wind.
No sound of the river that should’ve been just beyond the trees.
Nothing.
My fingers tightened around the edge of my jacket.
“Okay…” I whispered to myself, forcing a shaky breath. “This is fine. Totally normal.”
It wasn’t.
The air shifted.
Cold.
Then heavy.
Then—
A pulse.
It hit me so suddenly I staggered, grabbing onto the nearest tree as something burned beneath my skin.
“What—”
Another pulse.
Stronger.
This time, it didn’t just hurt.
It spread.
From my chest… to my veins… to my fingertips.
I gasped, dropping to my knees as heat exploded through me like fire.
No.
Not fire.
Something worse.
Something alive.
“Make it stop…” I choked, pressing my palm against the ground.
But the moment my skin touched the earth—
It answered.
The ground beneath me cracked.
A faint glow spread outward, thin lines of light tracing across the forest floor like veins, pulsing in time with my heartbeat.
My breath hitched.
That wasn’t possible.
I wasn’t—
Another pulse slammed into me.
And this time…
The world reacted.
The trees trembled.
The air twisted.
And somewhere in the distance—
Something howled.
Low.
Deep.
Not human.
My head snapped up.
“Did you hear that?” I whispered, even though I was alone.
At least…
I thought I was.
A shadow moved between the trees.
Too fast.
Too deliberate.
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Who’s there?”
No answer.
Just silence.
Then—
A second presence.
Behind me.
I spun around, panic rising, but there was nothing there.
Nothing I could see.
But I could feel it.
Watching.
Waiting.
Hunting.
“Stop this,” I said, my voice breaking. “I don’t know what’s happening, but I didn’t ask for it.”
The air stilled.
For one terrifying second—
Everything went completely silent.
Then the pain came back.
Harder.
Brighter.
My body arched as something burned through my veins, forcing a scream out of me before I could stop it.
And that’s when I saw it.
A mark.
Faint at first.
Then glowing.
Right beneath my skin.
I stared at my wrist in horror as a symbol I had never seen before began to form—intricate, ancient, alive.
“No…” I whispered.
This wasn’t real.
It couldn’t be.
But the mark didn’t fade.
It pulsed.
Stronger.
Brighter.
Like it was calling something.
Or someone.
And then—
The wind returned.
Violent.
Sharp.
The trees bent as if something powerful had just entered the forest.
My breath caught.
Because this time…
I wasn’t imagining it.
Footsteps.
Slow.
Heavy.
Deliberate.
I wasn’t alone.
I scrambled to my feet, backing away, my heart racing so fast it felt like it might tear through my chest.
“Stay back,” I said, even though my voice had no power behind it.
The shadows shifted.
And then—
He stepped into the light.
Tall.
Dark.
Unfamiliar.
His eyes locked onto mine.
And something inside me…
reacted.
Not fear.
Not exactly.
Something deeper.
Something dangerous.
Like my body recognized him—
even when my mind didn’t.
His gaze dropped to my wrist.
To the mark.
And for the first time, his expression changed.
Not confusion.
Not surprise.
Recognition.
My stomach twisted.
“You…” he said, his voice low, controlled… but edged with something I couldn’t understand.
I took another step back. “Who are you?”
He didn’t answer.
Instead, he stepped closer.
Every instinct screamed at me to run.
I didn’t move.
I couldn’t.
Because the moment he got close enough—
The mark on my wrist burned.
Bright.
Wild.
Alive.
His jaw tightened.
“Impossible,” he muttered.
“What is?” I demanded, fear finally breaking through. “What’s happening to me?”
He lifted his gaze again.
And this time—
There was no hiding it.
Not the intensity.
Not the darkness.
Not the claim.
“You shouldn’t exist,” he said quietly.
My breath caught.
Before I could respond—
Another presence slammed into the clearing.
Faster.
Harder.
More violent.
The air shifted again—this time carrying something raw, primal.
I turned just in time to see another figure step out of the shadows.
Larger.
Stronger.
His eyes glowed gold in the darkness.
And the moment they landed on me—
Everything inside me stilled.
No.
Not stilled.
Recognized.
A low growl rumbled from his chest as his gaze flicked to the man standing in front of me.
Then back to me.
Possessive.
Unforgiving.
Certain.
“Step away from her,” he said, his voice rough, dangerous.
The first man didn’t move.
“Or what?” he replied coolly.
The tension between them snapped tight.
Like something ancient had just been triggered.
And suddenly—
I understood.
This wasn’t about me.
Not entirely.
This was something bigger.
Something older.
Something that had just found its center—
in me.
The man with golden eyes took a step forward.
“Mine.”
The word hit the air like a strike.
Cold.
Final.
Terrifying.
The other man’s expression darkened instantly.
“She doesn’t belong to you.”
Their voices clashed.
Power.
Control.
Claim.
And right in the middle of it—
Was me.
My heart pounded as I looked between them, panic rising fast.
“I don’t belong to either of you,” I said, forcing the words out.
Neither of them looked at me.
That was the problem.
Because the way they were staring at each other—
Wasn’t disagreement.
It was war.
And somehow…
Without understanding how…
Without knowing why…
I had just become the reason for it.
