Chapter 10

As they reached the center of the trees, chills went up her spine. She sensed, something. From the way that Kono tensed up, she knew he had sensed it too.

“What is it?”

“I’m not sure, just stay next to me” he didn’t have to tell her twice, she was pretty sure that she couldn’t get any closer to him. They both stood still and quiet, just looking around in all directions trying to see what it was causing the discomfort they were feeling. Their eyes were finally opened to what the problem was. She counted 7 men, from one of their rival tribes. They were all around them. She grabbed on tighter to Konos arm.

“What do we do?” Ignoring her question, Kono looked around at each of the men.

“What are you doing here? This is not your land.” One of the men stepped forward laughing.

“Well hello there. What are you doing out here by yourselves? Aren’t you the son of Chief Ahote?”

“I am” Anika could feel the power coming from Kono, he looked fearless.

“Well, then you’re exactly the person I’m looking to run into. I have tried in the past to make a deal with your father over this land. It is abundant in resources and we wish to take part in them.”

“I stand by my fathers decision. This is our peoples land and we will not allow you to take share in it.” 

“Still holding onto the past huh?” he looked past Kono right at her, and the way he stared at her disgusted her “well what do we have here?” 

Kono pushed her further behind him out of the mans view. “I would advise you not to look in such a manner at something that does not belong to you.” Her wolf was cooing in the back of her mind at how protective Kono was being.

“I don’t believe that we are going to come to an agreement, however, I think I might need to take your little friend there off of your hands” the grin he showed to Kono was evil and Anika could feel the heat eliminating from Konos whole body.

“You will not touch her!”

As soon as he said those words all of the men took a step closer. One of them came up behind her and grabbed her arm to yank her from Konos side. He pulled her away so quickly she had no time to react. Kono tried to grab her but the other men circled him and began to hit him. 

She was panicking, she didn’t know what was going to happen. She felt something in her mind, a knocking like sensation and she looked over to see Kono staring at her. She opened her mind and heard his voice.

“I have to turn. It is the only way we can escape this. Don’t be afraid, I must kill them all so they do not tell others of our tribes secret. Please. Do not let this change the way you see me.” How could he possibly think that saving their lives would make her see him as anything less than how she already viewed him?

“Do it!” With those words, bones cracking echoed through the trees. The men all stopped and stared as Konos body changed before their eyes. His smooth skin quickly grew thick, beautiful, black fur. His wolf was about twice the size of a regular wolf and power radiated from him. The wolf looked over at her and she seen his beautiful dark eyes. He began to attack each of the men who had no idea what they had just witnessed. You could see the fear coming from them as they tried will all their power to take over the creature in front of them. One by one, he took them all down. Killing them all. 

When he was done with the ones that had surrounded him, he turned his attention to the one that still had his arms around Anika. The wolf growled and showed all of his sharp fangs as he slowly walked towards them. The man shoved Anika into the wolf and bolted into the trees as fast as he could go, Kono followed.

Anika sat there on the ground surrounded by mauled bodies and could not speak or move. What she had just witnessed was amazing and terrifying all at the same time. She tried to slow her breathing but it wasn’t slowing down. Her body was on fire and she felt a tinge of pain in the pit of her stomach. Suddenly the pain began moving outwards. Moving from her stomach outwards, hitting her chest, and flowing through her arms and down her legs. What was happening?
