“It’s just a nightmare,” Bree managed to choke out, her voice hoarse as she drew in a ragged breath. “It’s nothing but a nightmare. I just need to wake up.”
But she wasn’t waking up.
The heavy charcoal drapes that hang floor to ceiling are all pulled shut, leaving only a few shafts of light to come piercing through the gap from the blackout curtains. Bree, her hair in evident shambles as she tried to regulate her breathing, was seated on the floor, curled in front of a lopsided mirror.
Her horrified reflection on the surface drew on an even more eerie picture as she stared at it wide-eyed. The girl she sees in front of her didn’t look anything like her at all. She was pale, small traces of her veins visible under that paper-like texture. Her eyes were black, leaving no traces of their normal spark and the occasional brown streak. Everything about her looked dead, her skin cold as she felt her heartbeat slowing to a stop. She looked younger. And she looked hungry.
And it wasn’t even that that bothered her the most.
Hiding behind her trembling lips was something she originally thought was only possible in movies and the stories she writes. She didn’t know what to do. Nobody would. It had been an innocent wish. A wish that she was too hungover to even remember.
A wish that she should have never even thought about.
A wish that will now change her life.
For better or for worse? Who knows? Because as she recounted her words that previous night, she was now sure that she was living inside her own story. A story where she’s the protagonist. The vampire protagonist.
