The heavy iron horn of the Blood Moon Pack bellowed through the mountain pass, a low, vibrating warning that signaled trouble at the border.
Caleb walked into Natalia's chambers, his heavy steel shoulder guards clinking with each step. He didn't say a word. He walked straight to the wardrobe, pulled out a thick, dark blue fur cloak—the exclusive mark of the Blood Moon Alpha's household—and draped it gently over Natalia's shoulders.
"Kaelen is at the border," Caleb said, his dark eyes flashing with a cold, predatory light. "He brought a detachment to the Blackwater River under the pretense of hunting an escaped convict. Let's go welcome him."
He held out his hand. Natalia looked at his large, calloused palm, then placed her small hand in his. His grip closed around hers, firm and reassuringly warm.
The journey to the border was swift. Mounted on massive, black shadow-wolves, Caleb, Natalia, and a vanguard of fifty fully armed Blood Moon warriors tore through the misty mountain trails, arriving at the shores of the Blackwater River just as the morning fog began to lift.
Across the narrow, rushing river, the Silver Fang warriors stood in formation, their silver-tipped lances gleaming under the pale sun.
At the front of the line sat Alpha Kaelen, mounted on his silver-grey warhorse, looking every bit the proud, noble leader. Beside him was Chloe, wearing sleek leather riding gear, a whip resting in her hand.
When Kaelen’s eyes locked onto the approaching riders, his golden brows knitted together. His gaze fell upon the girl riding beside Caleb.
Natalia’s hair, once dull and tangled, now flowed in brilliant silver-white waves over the deep blue fur of the Alpha’s cloak. Her cheeks were flushed with healthy color, her posture erect, and her lavender eyes looked back at him with an icy, calm detachment. There was no trace of the shivering, broken girl he had exiled into the storm just two nights ago.
Kaelen’s hand tightened on the reins, his horse stepping back in agitation.
"Natalia..." Kaelen murmured, the name escaping his lips before he could stop it. A strange, heavy knot tightened in his chest.
"Alpha Caleb!" Kaelen shouted, projecting his voice across the rushing waters, trying to force his Alpha authority into his tone. "You are harboring a fugitive from the Silver Fang Pack. Natalia is a criminal who fled her exile. Hand her over immediately, and we can avoid a conflict."
Caleb let out a low, rumbling laugh that sounded like rolling thunder. He guided his shadow-wolf to the edge of the river bank, his arm sliding possessively around Natalia's waist, pulling her flush against his side.
"Harboring a fugitive?" Caleb mocked, his voice echoing off the stone cliffs. "You must have lost your mind, Kaelen. The girl standing beside me is no fugitive. She is the Luna of the Blood Moon Pack. My claimed mate."
Chloe’s face twisted in pure, ugly jealousy. She rode her mount forward, pointing her whip at Natalia. "Your mate? She is a shifted-less defect, Caleb! She is a human cripple who cannot even form claws! The Blood Moon must be desperate if you're taking Kaelen's discarded garbage as your queen!"
Natalia pulled back the hood of her blue cloak, her lavender eyes locking onto Chloe, then shifting to Kaelen. For nineteen years, she had remained silent under their abuse. But she was no longer in their cage.
"Discarded garbage, Chloe?" Natalia’s voice was clear, cold, and carried easily across the river. "I was rejected by a boy who values political contracts over the Moon Goddess's will. Kaelen, you threw me away because you thought I was weak. But standing here, beside a real Alpha, I realize how pathetic you truly are. You don't even deserve to stand in Caleb's shadow."
Kaelen’s face flushed red with humiliation and fury. "Natalia! Know your place! You are a shifted-less—"
"Silence."
Caleb spoke. The single word was quiet, but the temperature around the riverbank plummeted.
Caleb’s eyes turned a brilliant, bloodthirsty crimson. He released his Aura.
A wave of pure, suffocating pressure erupted across the Blackwater River. The rushing water beneath them suddenly churned, splashing violently against the rocks. Across the river, Kaelen’s warhorse reared up with a panicked shriek, nearly throwing him, while the Silver Fang warriors’ mounts whimpered and fell to their knees, crushed by the weight of a superior Alpha’s power.
Kaelen struggled to control his horse, his face pale as he felt the crushing weight of Caleb's intent. He realized, with a sickening jolt, that if Caleb crossed the river now, the Silver Fang vanguard would be slaughtered.
"Cross my river, Kaelen," Caleb growled, his hand resting on the hilt of his massive broadsword. "Give me a reason to paint these stones with your blood."
Kaelen glared at Caleb, then at Natalia, his eyes lingering on the dark red bite mark visible on her collarbone where the cloak had parted. A dark, toxic jealousy flared in his chest, mixed with a sudden, terrifying regret.
"This isn't over, Caleb," Kaelen hissed, violently turning his horse around. "Retreat!"
The Silver Fang detachment turned and quickly galloped back into the safety of their forest, leaving the riverbank silent once more.
Caleb turned to Natalia, his crimson eyes fading back to dark brown. He reached up, his large hand gently cupping her cheek, his thumb tracing the bite mark on her neck.
"You did well, My Luna," Caleb murmured, a dark, dangerous smile playing on his lips. "Brandon! Prepare the warriors. The Silver Fang has shown their hand. We strike their border outposts tonight."
