The Scent in the Dark

889 Words
The mud clung to Natalia’s bare feet like icy iron shackles. The storm in the Forbidden Forest was relentless, the heavy rain stinging her face and blinding her lavender eyes. Every breath she took felt like inhaling broken glass. The high fever was burning her from the inside out, making the dark, twisted branches of the ancient trees warp and swirl in her vision. *Thump. Thump.* Behind her, the heavy, rhythmic padding of paws on wet leaves grew louder. A low, guttural growl vibrated through the rain-soaked air. Natalia stumbled over a mossy root, crashing hard onto the forest floor. The jagged rocks tore into her palms, but she couldn't feel the pain anymore. The fever had numbed her body, leaving only the primal instinct to survive. She rolled over, pushing her back against the hollow trunk of a massive, rotted oak tree. Through the curtain of rain, three pairs of glowing yellow eyes emerged from the darkness. They were rogue forest wolves—low-tier, feral beasts driven mad by hunger. They bared their yellowed fangs, their saliva mixing with the rain, slowly closing the distance. Natalia gripped the broken fragments of the wolf-fang pendant in her hand, the sharp metal edges digging into her bleeding palm. She had no wolf. She had no claws to fight back. She was entirely at their mercy. "Go on then," Natalia whispered, her voice barely audible over the thunder. "Finish it." The largest of the rogue wolves crouched, tensing its hind legs to spring. Suddenly, the wind stopped. The rain seemed to slow in mid-air. An invisible, suffocating pressure slammed down on the forest, so heavy and dark that Natalia felt the air leave her lungs. The ground beneath her vibrated with a terrifying, primal resonance. The rogue wolves froze. Their aggressive snarls instantly turned into pathetic, high-pitched whimpers. The alpha of the trio dropped its tail between its legs and backward-crawled, its eyes dilated in absolute terror. Within a second, all three rogue wolves turned and fled into the dark underbrush, scrambling to escape whatever was coming. Natalia tried to breathe, but her chest wouldn't move. The sheer force of the Alpha aura in the air was suffocating. Heavy, slow footsteps crunched on the wet branches. From the shadow of the giant pine trees, a man stepped into the faint moonlight. He was massive, towering over the darkness, his broad chest rising and falling in ragged, violent gasps. His black hair was plastered to his forehead by the rain, and his hands—already half-shifted into claws—were dripping with fresh blood. But it was his eyes that made Natalia’s blood run cold. They were entirely, brilliantly crimson. The eyes of a feral Alpha in the final stages of his madness. It was Alpha Caleb of the Blood Moon Pack. Caleb snarled, a sound so deep and guttural it shook the leaves above. The internal heat of his feral curse was burning his organs, driving his consciousness into a void of pure, bloodthirsty madness. He saw the figure huddled against the tree—an intruder on his territory, a target to be shredded. He took a step forward, his shadow engulfing her completely. His heavy, clawed hand reached out, aiming directly for her throat. Natalia closed her eyes, waiting for the fatal blow. But the blow never came. As Caleb lunged forward, the wind shifted, carrying the scent of rain-drenched hair and bruised skin. More than that, it carried her scent—a pure, intoxicating aroma of fresh winter freesia and cold mountain spring water. Caleb froze. The red in his eyes flared, then violently contracted. The scent hit his senses like a tidal wave of ice water, instantly extinguishing the raging inferno in his veins. The suffocating pressure in his chest eased. The chaotic roar of his inner beast suddenly silenced, replaced by a desperate, pulling sensation. *Mate.* The word echoed in the depths of Caleb’s mind, shattering the feral fog. He stared down at the small, shivering girl. The silver-white hair, the pale skin, the lavender eyes staring back at him with quiet defiance. His breath hitched. The scent was coming from her. It was the only thing in the world that could quiet his terminal madness. Before Natalia could move, Caleb lunged, his massive hands wrapping around her waist. With a raw, possessive grunt, he yanked her against his broad chest. "Ah!" Natalia gasped as she was slammed against a chest as hard as iron. Caleb didn't care. He buried his face deep into the crook of her neck, inhaling greedily. The cold spring and freesia scent filled his lungs, bringing a wave of relief so intense his whole body trembled. His claws retracted, his hands gripping her waist tighter, practically pinning her to his frame. "Mine," Caleb growled, his voice deep, gravelly, and laced with a terrifying possessiveness. "You're mine." Natalia’s vision began to fade into black borders. The warmth of his body was overwhelming against her freezing skin, but the sheer intensity of the scent pull and her burning fever finally took their toll. Her head lulled against his shoulder, her hands losing their grip on the broken silver fragments. As her eyes closed, she felt the massive Alpha lift her effortlessly into his arms, holding her like his most precious treasure against the storm.
