Chapter 4

Milo instantly jumped out of his chair at the news. “Jesus Milo, what happened?” Missy breathed out, startled by her brother's sudden movements. “She’s awake.” He told her quietly in disbelief. Missy rose slowly from her chair, sporting her own surprised expression to match her brother. “But how? They’ve only just got in there and…” Her question was interrupted when a loud bang stole their attention, shortly followed by a massive commotion inside the room. The siblings rushed inside, only to find the girl they rescued screaming frantically towards no one in particular, for them to let her leave. She resembled a rabid animal, tearing apart the room with anger. Suddenly, she froze and turned to face Milo. As soon as their eyes met, her entire persona changed from one of anger to complete and utter confusion, which slowly morphed into fear and disbelief. Fear so potent that Milo could smell it in the air. Missy noticed the clear change in the girl's demeanor when she saw her brother, so she linked Milo hesitantly. “Do you think she recognizes you as her mate?” she asked him, secretly interrupting the silence. Milo sat on the question but dismissed the idea, “how could she?” Taking advantage of the girl's now frozen state, a doctor crept towards her from behind, but before the man could get too close Mara moved with inhuman speed and forced the man to his knees, holding the doctor's head between her hands. Growls fill the room from the other wolves, and Missy gasped loudly at the sight before her. Milo, however, lifted his hand to stop anyone else approaching his mate, and he stared at her with intense curiosity. How did she move so fast? What about her injuries? A human can’t move like that. Questions and possibilities swarmed Milo’s mind. Less than an hour ago he had found her almost at death’s door, but now she appeared to be in perfect health with no signs of any injuries. He was completely floored and had no idea what was happening, which was an incredibly rare occurrence for him. “Tell me where my sister is, or your wolf is dead.” Mara threatened in a deathly calm tone. Milo didn’t process the context of what his mate had said at first, he only relished at finally hearing her voice, which he thought was as smooth as velvet. The sound of her filled him with extreme comfort and an orgasmic pleasure which he didn't want to end. She sounded delightful. Snapping out of his inappropriate mindset, he quickly questioned his own sanity, his wolf snickering at his flustered state. Finally realizing what she had said, a confused expression took over his face. Sister? What is she talking about? He thought. But that's not the only thing that puzzled him. A single word in particular sent his mind into an excited frenzy. She knows we are wolves. Holding up his hands in surrender in an attempt to calm the situation, he spoke for the first time since entering the room. “Please release him, and then we can talk.” Mara shook her head in disbelief, “why? So he can stab me with whatever is in that vial? Absolutely not” she laughed humorlessly. Confusion once again filled Milo, until he spotted a vial in the doctor's left hand which he hadn’t noticed before. Anger immediately flowed out of him at the idea of someone trying to hurt her, seething as he turned his attention towards the doctor. “What is in that? Were you trying to harm your Luna?” The man paled, shaking at both the accusation from his Alpha and the threatening position that could quickly result in his death. Dropping the needle to the floor, the vial shattered and the liquid pooled on the floor. “No Alpha! No, it’s a sedative! To calm her, and it was necessary, she was becoming erratic”, he stuttered out, trying to explain his actions. Milo visibly sniffed the air, and indeed the liquid was just a mild sedative. “He won’t hurt you, you can release him now.” Milo spoke to her, but this did not appease Mara and caused a deafening growl to rumble out of her in warning, followed by an aura so strong it forced everyone to recoil slightly as their wolves whimpered in light submission to this unknown girl. Milo stepped back only from surprise, but he did feel her aura, and it shook him a little when his wolf was silent within him. Missy, on the other hand, was ecstatic, and excitedly clapped her hands squealing lightly. “So you're really not a human!” She pointed at Mara, who only raised an eyebrow in response. “Ugh Milo, why did you tell me she was? You got me all worried about you thinking that your mate was gonna die and that I was gonna have to deal with you moping around the house like a sick chihuahua. When really, she's this badass wolf with a stronger aura than yours!” Missy rambled on as usual, irritating Milo to no end. This was not time for one of her rants, and in all honesty, he had forgotten that his sister was even in the room. “Missy. Stop talking please” he vulnerably said to his sister as he started to feel embarrassed for being wrong about his mate. “You told me she was human!” He accused his wolf, but he still received no response. Milo’s wolf had been quiet ever since Mara had released her aura, which Milo didn’t understand. Surely his wolf should be relieved that his mate wasn’t a human? It definitely saved him from a lot of awkward conversations about the werewolf world, and from telling her that he was her soulmate and that she now had to help rule a pack… Milo cringed at the idea. Mara slowly dropped her guard as she started to realize these people were in fact not trying to harm her, finally deciding to let the man go. She watched him scramble to his feet and rush out of the room, passing by the Alpha on the way. The other hospital personnel in the room followed the man out, to which she assumed the Alpha linked them and asked everyone to leave. She stared intently at Milo, trying to figure out what to do from there. She knew he was her mate. She realized as soon as his addictive scent robbed her attention away from her frantic meltdown. It scared her beyond belief. She did not have the best opinion of mates and Maria had hoped she would never run into hers. It was just the two of them in the room now, and neither one of them had broken their staring contest. He sighed and slowly moved towards her, causing her to immediately take double his steps back. Hurt flashed upon his face, which in turn made her chest restrict painfully. Mara hated the feeling deeply. The only people she wanted to care about were her mother and Cici. They were all she needed. “Look, thank you for bringing me to the hospital, but I don’t need help. Just take me to my sister’s room, and then we will get off of your land. I don’t want any trouble.” Mara spoke awkwardly, not knowing how she should be talking to the man. Now that they were alone, she suddenly became very aware of the fact that she had all but forgotten pack customs. She did not want to offend the Alpha again if she wanted any chance of leaving there quickly. She was a rogue after all, and she could not miss the important meeting their mother had set up a few days ago. Milo looked towards her sympathetically, hearing the underlying desperation in her voice. “I’m sorry mate, but that won’t do. You are to stay here. After all, you are to be Luna in this pack soon, so we can’t have you running off somewhere.” He casually stated, as if it should have been obvious to her that she couldn’t leave now. “And about your sister? I don’t know who she is, but she isn’t here.” Mara visibly tensed at the news. Milo wasn’t sure if her reaction was due to not being able to leave, or the fact that her sister wasn’t at the hospital. Mara could not move a muscle as fear encased every inch of her body. One thought raced around her mind over and over again. Where is Cici?
