Anna woke to an empty silence, her heart heavy with the weight of her father's departure. Her brother, Jack, was already up, his door slightly ajar.
"Hey, Jack," Anna whispered.
"Hey," he replied, his voice subdued.
Their mom had left for work, leaving them to navigate this difficult morning alone.
As Anna dressed, she felt suffocated by the impending day. School loomed, where classmates branded her a "weirdo" and "loner" simply because she preferred quiet contemplation.
Tears pricked at the corners of her eyes as she recalled last week's torment:
"Hey, weirdo! Why don't you talk?"
"Anna, you're so quiet. Are you mute?"
Their words still lingered, leaving scars on her soul.
Downstairs, Jack waited in the kitchen, his eyes reflecting shared pain.
"You okay?" he asked.
Anna nodded, trying to reassure him.
At school, Anna navigated the chaotic corridors, avoiding eye contact. She spotted Jack across the hallway, chatting with friends, his easy smile a stark contrast to her own struggles.
