Chapter 1
The planet is ruled by beings called supernatural creatures by the old ones. They had ruled for fifty years by the time I was born. I was the child of a witch and a pure human. I ended up being a “pet” to a female dragon shifter at three weeks old.
The dragon shifter has a fairy make my hair permanently electric blue and my eyes a grass green. I grew up with her being a mother to me. Her six foot tall frame always towered over me. She had a golden brown of a tan that made her bright blue eyes pop and her blonde shoulder length hair that was streaked with electric green look like a sunset over pure earth.
I was two years old when Mutti took me on my first flight with her. I got to watch her transform. She ended up being eight feet long with shiny electric green scales all over her body with a gold underbelly. Her claws were three feet long and black in color. She also had white whiskers that reached halfway down her body. I stood in awe looking at her until the bright purple eyes met mine.
‘Come, Bambina. I want you to join me amongst the stars tonight.’ Her voice rang through my head.
“Otay, Mutti,” I spoke aloud as I climbed on her front paw.
Big, leathery wings unfurled from her back as she leapt into the sky as the sun set. The ground quickly became small square fields of different shades of green. I was looking down when Mutti told me to look up. She was flying belly up to allow me an uninterrupted view of the sky. One half was dark blue with white dots that I was told were stars. The other half was pink and orange that was fading as the sun was swallowed by the earth. This flight quickly became a nightly ritual that helped me fall asleep.
I was five years old when Mutti taught me her name. Drakai. Pronounced dru-kie. It was difficult for me to say. We had worked out a name for me to call her.
“Fraea, where are the eggs for breakfast?” Mutti spoke from the kitchen.
“On the counter by the sink. I washed them off for you, Kaikai.” I sat patiently at the kitchen table. I waited as Mutti cracked the eggs I had gathered and finished breakfast. It only took a few minutes for her to finish up breakfast and serve it. We ate and picked up quickly. I walked from the table across the living room, down a small hallway and into my room on the right. I got dressed in a red and yellow dress that made me look like a sunrise/sunset in the middle of Kansas. I brushed out my hair and pulled it up into a ponytail. I then slipped on a pair of blue high top converse. I retraced my steps through the house and sat at the table .
I had an art set in the middle of the table. I was in the middle of a drawing for Murri and wanted to continue working on it. I could see it in my mind already. It was an outline of a person against a night sky. Their back was to the viewer with their head tilted up. A dragon soaring through the night was looking back with eyes open to show off the bright electric green of them.
I was about to stand up to get my art set when Mutti walked out of her room that was across the hall from mine. She was in a shirt the color of the sun right before it disappeared from the horizon. She also had on black shorts and boots. Her hair was pulled into a low ponytail.
“Kaikai, what are our plans for today?”
“We have to go get you new clothes. There is a new school for humans that you will be attending soon.” Mutti sat across the table from me.
“Why do I have to go to school?”
“You want to be able to read and write, do math, and tell me stuff in a big girl way, right?”
“I guess. Will I still be able to see you all day?”
“Not all day. I will drop you off and pick you up. You can tell me all about your day at school. I know that you will love it.”
“There won’t be anything to tell you, because I will not go without you.”
“Fraea Tala, you are going to school. I am telling you right now that you will not disobey me. What I say goes without argument. Do you have any other questions about school?”
“No, Kaikai. I’m sorry I made you upset.”
“It is okay, Bambina. Let’s go shopping so we can get home faster.” Mutti gathered her things, and we walked out the door.
The car ride was three hours long. Kansas City was packed with people. I had to put on a pink backpack that looked like a dragon with a long tail that Mutti had wrapped around her wrist. She said that it was to keep me safe and alert her in case someone tried to take me. I still held onto her hand as we walked.
The first store we went into was called Little Monkeys Boutique. Mutti and I did not find a lot that we liked. We then walked to Kid Oh!. We found a few things that we liked and bought. Lunch was at a cafe in the mall. Everything was so colorful. We left Kansas City to go to Joplin. The North Park Mall was a place that we knew we could find things at.
It took us two and a half hours to get there. The first store we went to was a kid store that was bright and colorful. Mutti bought me a few dresses from there. The next shop was a “darker” store that was a bit more pleasing to our eyes than bright colors. We found a few shirts before we paid and went to find me shorts in another store that was in the middle of the brightness of colors. It did not take long to find several pairs. We left the mall after that. I fell asleep a few minutes after getting into the car.
I woke up to the smell of cheeseburgers cooking. I was on a small pallet in the front room by the fireplace. I sat up and rubbed my eyes.
“Did you have a good nap, Bambina?” Mutti’s voice carried from the kitchen easily.
“Yes, I did. Do I have time to color?” I stretched as I spoke.
“No. I need you to set the table for me.” Mutti set a plate of cheeseburgers in the middle of the table. I got the plates and silverware to set the table. We ate in silence since I was still tired.
After dinner, we got ready for bed. I got into my princess pajamas and crawled into bed. I fell asleep thinking about going to school.
I woke up and it was still dark outside. I got out of bed and walked across the hall to Mutti’s room. I crawled into her bed and snuggled into her. She put an arm around me and pulled me close. I fell back asleep quickly. The next time I woke up, Mutti was already awake. I rolled over and pulled the blanket over my head.
“What do you want for breakfast, Bamina?”
“Pancakes.” I know my voice was muffled, but Mutti heard it.
“You better get up. You know that it will not take me a long time to make them.”
“I do not want to get up.”
“If you do not get up, you will not get any pancakes.”
I groaned and rolled out of bed. I walk to the table and set it. It did not take Mutti more than five minutes to make our pancakes. We ate in silence, minus a few yawns from me.
“We need to get dressed so that we can go get your school supplies.” Muttie had cleaned our dishes and set them to dry. I walked into my room and picked out a pale pink dress. It took me five minutes to get dressed and do my hair. I was waiting at the door when there was a knock. I ran to Mutti’s room without making a noise.
“Mutti, someone is at the door,” I spoke quietly as I entered the room. She looked at me as I hid in a corner in her room that was designated as my hiding spot so that no one tried to take me. She walked out of the room and opened the front door.
“Hello, are you Drakai?” The voice belonged to a woman due to the higher pitch that reached me.
“Yes. Who are you?”
“I am Mrs. Schamorr. I will be Fraea’s teacher. I was wondering if it was okay for me to stop by tomorrow around five in the afternoon so that we can get to know each other.”
“That will work for us. We will see you at five tomorrow evening. Safe travels to you.” Mutti shut the door and came back into her room. “Bambina, time to go get school supplies. You will meet your teacher tomorrow.”
I crawled out of the hiding spot. I walked over to Mutti and grabbed her hand. We left the house and went to the local supercenter.
We were back home in two hours. We filled my purple pencil box and rainbow backpack with everything I needed for school.
“When do I start school, Kaikai?” I was at the table coloring when I spoke.
“Next Tuesday will be your first day. Are you excited?” Mutti was sitting on the couch, reading a book.
“Not really. There are going to be a lot of people there that I do not know.”
“This is true, but they might become your friends.”
“Who is my teacher?”
“Mrs. Schamorr will be your teacher. Are you nervous, baby?”
“Yes. Scared, too. Will Mrs. Schamorr be my teacher until I am done with school?”
“Just for one school year. The school has different teachers for different grades.” Mutti stood up and walked behind me. She put her hands on my shoulders before bending down and giving my head a kiss. “It will be okay.”
I stayed quiet and worked on my picture. I had to color in the stars and then it would be complete. I pulled out a blank piece of paper and grabbed a pencil. I started to draw the outline of an eye on the top of the page. On the bottom, I drew the outline of a small girl surrounded by fire. When I finished with that , I drew the outline of a big claw reaching toward the girl.
Before I knew it, it was time to set the table. Mutti had made pork chops and mashed potatoes with corn for dinner. We ate while talking about what we wanted to do before I started going to school. Mutti wanted to go to an amusement park, while I wanted to go to a laser tag place. We ended up agreeing on the arcade at the mall. After dinner, we got ready for bed and it did not take me long to fall asleep.
I was in a field of blue flowers. To my left were more flowers as far as I could see. To my right was a small cottage that was a dull blue. There was smoke rising out of the chimney and the door was wide open. I looked up to the sky, hoping to see something flying. I did not see anything and called out for Mutti.
“Where are you, Mutti?” I kept looking around before I walked toward the house. I kept looking around and noticed that everything was getting darker. I turned around and could only see black. I ran toward the house, but it was gone. “I want my mutti.” I looked to the sky again to try to find Mutti, but it was empty.
I woke up to Mutti by my side with a worried look on her face. She hugged me close and smoothed down my hair.
“It was just a nightmare. It was all a dream. I am right here and will always be close by. I will not let anything happen to you, ever.”
“What about when I am at school?” I calmed my breathing after speaking.
“I will be close by. I have everything worked out.” Mutti started to rock me back and forth/ “The only thing you have to worry about is doing good in school. How about we go to the pool today?”
I smiled and nodded, slowly falling back asleep.
It was mid morning when I woke up. I stretched and climbed out of bed to get dressed. I was about to leave my room when there was a knock at the door. I quietly crawled under my bed and made my breathing as quiet as possible.
“Mrs. Schamorr, what a pleasant surprise. What news do you come bearing to have a look about you that is the weight of the world on your shoulders?” Mutti’s voice carried to my room.
“It has been asked that certain students start earlier than everyone else. The school board wants to see the human pets of all shifters before all others to give them specialized classes.”
“How much sooner do they want them there?”
“It all starts tomorrow. Do you mind me asking why Fraea is on my list when you are not listed as a shifter on any paperwork?”
“My kind used to be hunted for their hides. I am a shifter through and through, but I do not have to put it down on any non federal paperwork. What time do I need to have Fraea at school?”
“Eight AM. I will see you then.”
“Have a nice day, Mrs. Schamorr.”
I heard footsteps heading toward my room after the door shut.
“Bambina, you can come out.”
I crawled out from under my bed and looked at Mutti. “I have to start earlier than others?”
“Yes, baby.”
“I don’t want to.”
“Which would you like to do today, go swim or go to the arcade?” Mutti hugged me as I tried not to cry.
“I’m hungry. Can I think about it while I eat?”
“Yes. What would you like?” Mutti started to walk toward the kitchen.
“Ham and cheese sandwich with mayo, please.” I followed her out of my room. I was already thinking about what I wanted to do with my last day with Mutti before school. I was torn between the arcade and going to the ropes course in Tulsa. Mutti set my plate in front of me. I started eating. “I want to go to the ropes course in Tulsa, but that was not one of my choices.”
“We can go there on the weekend. I believe that the arcade has some new games and activities.”
“We can go to the arcade as long as we can get ice cream on the way home.”
“Sounds like a plan. Eat up, Bambina.” Mutti took a big bite of her sandwich. We finished lunch in silence before grabbing our outing bags to head out. We took Mutti’s neon blue 1950 Ford Mustang to a new arcade that was bigger than the biggest kids arcade around. I loved going there. They had basketball, skee-ball, whack-a-mole, mini golf, bowling, racing games, hunting games, dancing games, and more. It was located in a big field outside of what was once Cherokee, KS. It did not take us long to get there. Mutti bought us the unlimited day passes.
We played basketball hoops, skee ball, mini golf, bowling, guitar hero, dance dance revolution, and a haunted maze before we were hungry for dinner. We chose to eat at a local chain restaurant called Fairie eats. Mutti ate a steak with mashed potatoes and cheese while I had chicken with yogurt. We got ice cream from Ice Cream Palace on our way home.
I changed into pjs and crawled into bed, falling asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
There was a man standing in front of me with a smile on his face that upset my stomach. He was five foot ten in height and had brown hair and green eyes. He would not stop watching me, no matter what I did. I saw a dragon flying overhead, circling down. It had purple scales and bright green eyes. The dragon landed between the man and me. The two just stared at each other. I watched as the dragon shifted forms. It was Mutti. She grabbed me from the ground and carried me off to the open field not far from where we were. The sky turned dark as Mutti walked. There were also no sounds of nature. A loud boom sounded behind us.
