Chapter 1
“Father, please wake up soon... I’m barely able to hold on.”
I lay gently on my father’s heaving chest. His breathing was very shallow and I had to concentrate to detect it.
I waited for a long time but there was no response from him.
My father, Brent Graves, was the leader of the New Moon Pack. I had been lucky to have such a powerful and honorable alpha father since I was a child. The fact that he was lying in bed in a coma broke my heart. I wanted my father to open his eyes and see me, I needed him and so did the entire New Moon Pack.
My father was severely wounded on the battlefield.
A nearby Fire Moon Pack had been plotting against us for ages. Father was a kind man and had always abhorred war. He wanted the land to remain peaceful forever and for every werewolf to live a happy and dignified life. However, the dream he had was shattered six months ago. The warriors of the Fire Moon Wolf Pack attacked us and a war began. My father led the heroic warriors of the pack to the front. He fought the invading pack with his life and was eventually seriously injured by the enemy.
I did not know long the war would go on and whether my father would be able to hold me in his arms again.
I had grown accustomed to relying on him as I was so well protected by him that I could no longer bear the loss of him.
“Father, I watered the flowers you planted and they bloomed today. I’m sure you’d like to see them, wouldn’t you?”
I buried my face deep into the blanket, and wept uncontrollably, blotting a large area with my tears.
At that moment, the door behind me rattled, and I hurriedly dried my tears so that the other wolves would not see me in that pathetic state.
“Laurel, why are you still here? Didn’t I already tell you to clean your sister’s room?”
My mother, Della Brooks, walked in and saw me with a slightly disgusted look. I was used to my mother’s indifference and disgust toward me.
I did not understand why my mother always treated me so harshly. She did not like me at all and treated me more like a servant. Initially, I thought that that was the way she was but she treated my sister Isabella completely differently. My mother doted on Isabella, always sitting under the tree with her in her arms and singing her songs to lull her to sleep. I had never enjoyed such treatment, even though I was handpicked by my father to be the future heir of the pack.
“Mother, I’m sorry, I just want to spend more time with Father.” I frantically stood up, immediately turned around, and went to clean Isabella’s room.
Then, she suddenly called out again, “By the way, how is your father’s condition now?”
I stopped in my tracks and hesitated. She kept asking me this question lately and I could vaguely infer from her expression and tone that she did not care about my father. Instead, she most likely had some ulterior motives. I informed her nonetheless.
“Father’s condition isn’t very good. I can feel his strength and his wolf’s soul within his body becoming weaker by the day. I will give him another type of medicine to see if there can be any improvement.” I was a natural herbalist and I believed that I would be able to save my father.
“In that case, then it looks like there is no way for him to lead our pack anytime soon.” Mother said with a sly smile. “Laurel, my dear daughter, I know that you have a very special ability. You can sense the physique and strength of each person. You also have the skill to prescribe medicine for them according to their needs. We need you very much. This time, the Fire Wolf Pack had launched several attacks on us. We will all suffer if Brent continues to lay here. I think that I should take over his authority.”
She spoke softly, but firmly. She did not seem to be asking.
I was stunned and finally understood what my mother was up to all these days. It turned out that she was trying to take away my father’s authority.
When I did not respond, she stopped smiling and said, “What? Laurel? Are you thinking that I, as a Luna, am not worthy to lead the pack?”
“No, no.” I slowly shook my head and could not help but look at my father again. He looked so fragile that he could drift away at any moment. “Mother, I understand that you also want to serve the pack, but there is no necessity to take over Father’s authority now. We can find a trusted Beta to discuss the defensive plans. They are more experienced on the battlefield and more than capable of executing Father’s battle plans accurately. In addition, my father had publicly chosen me as the heir, this matter should...”
Slap!
I was slapped before I could complete my sentence.
I covered my stinging and burning cheek and looked at my mother with eyes wide open. She looked cold and gloomy. I then realized that nothing I said mattered. She was hungry for power and authority. She would not allow anything to stand in her way.
“Laurel, there is no need for me to explain my actions to you. You’re just like your meddlesome father. Do you think that I married him and went through all those years for nothing? I don’t love him at all and married him so that one day I could take over the pack. Now you are just a stumbling block. You were not even born by me at all. If your father hadn’t been protecting you, I would have exiled you long ago! The New Moon Pack can only belong to me and it must belong to me!”
The more she said, the more worked up she became. The moment she forcefully grabbed my hair, I realized that she was not my biological mother!
“Mother, what are you saying? I... I’m not your...”
“You were born to Brent by some b***h from nowhere. I really wish that you were dead. Henceforth, my daughter Isabella is the real heir of the pack!”
I could not believe what I just heard. The mother I had respected all along was not my real mother at all. Now she was hell-bent on killing me.
I gripped the hand that was holding my hair but I did not want to hurt her. I just did not want to be treated that way. However, Isabella who rushed in saw this scene and obviously mistook me for attacking my mother. She yelled and then pounced on me. We fell to the ground together and she clawed wildly at my face. Since my hands were held down by Della, I could not move and had to endure Isabella’s assaults.
Ally: Laurel, let me out! I won’t allow anyone to hurt you!
Me: Don’t be impulsive, Ally, calm down a bit, we can’t hurt Luna, it’s an unforgivable sin, you must...
Ally: I’m sorry Laurel! This time it’s not negotiable!
I was going to put up with the humiliation, but it was clear that my wolf would not compromise. Ally was brave and she knew how to defend the rights of this body better than I did. She took over my body and proceeded to throw Luna across the room and kicked Isabella hard to the ground...
Soon, a patrol heard the noise and ran over.
“Laurel harmed her sister and hurt your Luna! She must be punished!” Della shouted and commanded the patrol. “Quickly put her in the dungeon!”
In the pack, Della’s status was that of my mother, and she was also the high and mighty Luna. No one dared to disobey her orders except my father.
Thus, I was dragged and thrown into the dungeon. It was a cold and damp dungeon where rats and insects crawled all over. I had never been treated like this and my father would rage if he knew what had happened! Now what would happen to my father? How was he going to get better without the medicine I concoct? I began to sob when I realized what the future had in store.
A few nights later, Isabella showed up as arrogant and cocky as ever. She was like a spoiled child with no boundaries.
Isabella viciously whipped my back until my skin split open. She then collected the blood that flowed out of it with a cup.
“I’m really happy to see you. Don’t be afraid, you will soon be released. I heard from my mother that the future heir of the Red Moon Pack, Caleb Grant, has been in a coma because he was severely wounded on the battlefield a few years ago. Legend has it that only the blood of a unique female alpha can awaken him. We will contribute your blood tomorrow, and if we succeed, then you will be married to Caleb. Congratulations in advance.”
She shrieked loudly while I felt chills all over my body.
The Red Moon Pack.
That was a vicious, violent, and territorially aggressive pack. I did not even want to go there, let alone marry anyone of them. I just want to care for my father. The New Moon Pack was my real home!
However, the Moon Goddess did not hear my cries.
I was soon told that my blood had worked and Caleb had some reaction. Although he had not fully awakened, the Red Moon Pack had explicitly demanded that I marry him. I was to leave here forever to be married to the Alpha Caleb, whom I had never met.
I did not even get to see my father one last time.
