Chapter 2 The morning of the accident at the Young family estate Lucas Young's voice could be heard thundering from the masters bedroom, "you're a good for nothing, how could you lose such a big contract to the Kings of all people" Lucas King barked at Kevin " you're a good for nothing, look at your brothers doing better, expanding our business and you sit here wasting our efforts" Lucas King continued with his face filled with anger and disappointment "For God sake father, it was out of my hands, I tried everything to make sure we got the contract, but I couldn't" Kevin retorted with an even louder voice "is there anything I do that pleases you?" He asked staring daggers into his father's eyes "you ignore every single good thing I do.... You only acknowledge my mistakes" Kevin continued questioning his dad, " if you do better, I'll would give you some respect, respect is earned Kevin" Lucas said mockingly, "there's nothing I haven't done to earn that respect, you often speak of " Kevin replied beginning I get frustrated. "Enough!!!, both of you, do not start this morning I have my grandkids downstairs, and your argument is not healthy for them" Emily Young screamed, interrupting the argument. "Save the argument for later, I don't need my children experiencing such toxicity" Emily said as she looked at her son and husband "and me?" Kevin asked with a questioning gaze " am I not your son or have you forgotten that, am I the only one allowed to experience it" he continued stepping closer to his mother "or did you forget" he continued taking slow steps closer to his mother. Kevin looked into his mother's eyes trying to find any form of warmth but all he saw was the same cold bright blue eyes he always saw when he looked at her, "of course you did" Kevin said breaking the silence that enveloped the room, "I won't be back home this night" Kevin continued as he turned away from his mother heading towards the door "Kevin, Kevin come back here" Lucas Young called out to him but he didn't respond. "I am going to teach him a lesson" Lucas said turning to his wife "what are you going to do?" Emily asked shifting her gaze from the door to her husband "you will find out soon" he replied walking towards the door "and when it's time you dare not interfere" he added slamming the door as he left. "Good morning, sir" Gabe Qing; Kevin's assistant greeted with a bright smile as Kevin walked into the fifteenth floor of the Young hotel building. "Not now Gabe" Kevin replied as a grumble. "You seem to be in a foul mood this morning, what happened" Gabe asked as they stepped into Kevin's office "Let me guess, your father happened" he said answering he's own question "do not mention that man" Kevin replied gritting his teeth "what of the files we were working on, I need them now" Kevin asked as he sat on his chair "we have to speed things up, I feel like my father is going to do something soon" Kevin said clutching his fist tightly "I'll go get it right away" Gabe said leaving the room. Kevin sat in silence staring at the bustling city, it was the only thing that gave him peace. "I have done the update you asked me to do, here" Gabe said handing the files to Kevin "are you sure...you want to do this?" Gabe questioned looking at Kevin as he read the file "I do" Kevin replied firmly. "Run it through the lawyers, ours and theirs, I don't want any loopholes" Kevin said handing the files to him "okay" Gabe replied as took the files. "Some advice from your best friend try to relax a little don't let them get in your head" Gabe said turning to face Kevin Later that evening Kevin's phone rang. Shifting he's gaze to his phone, a wry smile firmed on his lips "what do you want" Kevin said answering the phone "that is no way to speak to your favorite cousin" Anne; Kevin's cousin replied "I won't repeat myself" Kevin replied with a hint of annoyance in his voice "oh come on, chill out" Anne replied trying to tease him " you have ten seconds to speak or I'm hanging up...one, two, three" Kevin began counting "okay!! hold on, I just need your help, I need you to pick up Lucy from school, I can't make it, I have to be somewhere and you're the only one nearby" Anne replied "why didn't you call Mike or his wife to get his kid" Kevin replied annoyed "please you know how he can be, if I do so he will try to find out where am going and I can't tell him" Anne replied pleading " then call a driver from home" Kevin replied hanging up the phone. "Seriously?" Anne said staring at her phone "I'll have to convince you then". "Stop disturbing me, I'm not a chauffeur" Kevin reprimanded already annoyed "please brother if I call a driver uncle will find out and I don't want that.... plus, you love little Lucy" Anne begged as she hoped for a positive response "fine" Kevin agreed "I'll send someone to get her" he added. "No please don't little Lucy is terrified of outsiders, after what happened to her two weeks ago, remember?" Anne pleaded as the memory of event flashed through both their mind "alright what time do they close?" Kevin asked "three o'clock, which is twenty-five minutes from now" "if you leave now, you can make it on time" Anne replied as she squeaked happily "I didn't ask for your advice" Kevin retorted as he hanged up the phone. "Tell Gabe that I'll be out for a while and clear up schedule today I won't be coming back" Kevin said instructing the receptionist at the ground floor on his way out. "Yes sir" she replied with a bow. "Uncle!!!" Little Lucy screamed running towards her uncle. "How are you" Kevin asked crouching down to his knees to give her a hug, " I am fine, thank you" little Lucy replied with excitement. "Get in the car, let's drop you at home" Kevin said opening he car door for her to enter. "Oh no I forgot my lunch bag in my class" little Lucy said stopping in her tracks "I'll let your teachers know, now get in" Kevin replied gesturing for her to enter "no, don't worry, I'll get it myself" she replied running into the school building. " Sir, I need to clear off the road for other cars to pass" Kevin's driver informed him "very well then, I'll wait for little Lucy here" he replied without sparing him a glance. A few minutes later Kevin moved aside to answer a client's call when the ground began to shake, the walls of the school building began to crumble, everyone began to panic, a stampede slowly began to form people ran out of the building until the building finally collapsed but little Lucy had not come out yet which means she was in the rumble. Kevin ran towards the rumble screaming Lucy's name "Someone call for help he screamed" panicking for her safety. Still in disarray the first responders arrived, analyzing he situation they cleared up the crowd and began to find a way to get the people out of the building. "Let me in" screamed in anger at the police officer trying to stop him from getting into building "my niece is in there, let me in" he commanded fuming with rage and worry for little Lucy's safety. "You can't go in sir only first responders and medical personnel are allowed in" the officer retorted blocking he's path " I am a trained and certified member of the response team" Kevin responded flashing a picture of his certificate in front of the officer. "I'm sorry sir" the officer apologized on seeing the name on the certificate. Kevin shoved the officer aside and ran into the accident site. "What is your plan? How are you getting them out.....my niece is in there" he questioned trying to conceal his emotions "who are you" the officer asked staring at him with a questioning look "I'm Kevin Young, and like I said my niece is in there we need to get her out" he said almost screaming " sorry sir I didn't realize who you were" the officer apologized immediately "enough with the bullshit, what's your plan" Kevin replied irritated with the man's tardiness "this way sir, we managed to open a path into the building and we have brought out a few people from the third floor" the officer said hurriedly as he pointed towards the collapsed building and the path they made. "Get me a protective gear now" Kevin commanded "yes sir" the officer pointed towards his subordinate "go get Mr. Young some PPE now". The subordinate arrived with the gear. Kevin quickly put it on "I'm going in there to get my niece out" Kevin said as he ran into the building "sir hold on" the head officer called out as he chased after Kevin. "Lucy, Lucy are you here" Kevin called out as he searched through the rumble hoping to see her. The fifth floor (the top floor) of the building was not heavily damaged Kevin walked in still calling out to little Lucy, when he suddenly spotted her hand sticking out from under a pile of tables." Lucy!" he screamed running towards her, he sent the tables flying one by one to get her out "careful sir you may injure her more" the senior officer warned. Kevin realized himself and calmed down, little Lucy was brought out gently, lifting her up in his arms he felt a warm liquid oozing out of her head 'blood'. Kevin stared at his stained hand in horror "we have to get her out now, call the ambulance to the front" Kevin screamed shakingly ' he was terrified of blood' at the head officer "yes sir" the head officer replied fumbling with his phone as they carried little Lucy out of the collapsed building. The ambulance arrived and little Lucy was rushed to the hospital 'THE DELTA HOSPITAL'. On arrival there was chaos relatives of the survivors from the collapse were running around trying to get their loved ones attended to. The situation frustrated Kevin even more, Kevin ran into the crowd pulling little Lucy's stretcher along. He called out to the available nurses you help as the stretcher was pulled into the emergency unit Kevin screamed to get people out of the way, that was when he shoved someone or something aside and unto the floor "get out of the way" he barked not paying attention to who he had pushed. "Get her in now and make sure she's fine" Kevin instructed the doctors. "We will do our best, don't worry " the doctor assured him as he entered the operation theatre. Kevin paced about the theatre's entrance when his elder brother ' Mike ' arrived with his wife and the rest of the family. "What happened, how is Lucy" Sonia Lucy's mother asked Kevin in tears. "Yes, Kevin where is Lucy" Mike asked Kevin as he held his wife. "The school building collapsed with Lucy inside of it" Kevin a answered without look at anyone "how could that have happened, weren't you there" Lucas Young asked looking at Kevin who still did not lift his face to look at anyone of them "calm down" Emily Young replied trying to ease the tension that was almost raised "He couldn't have done anything" she continued to avoid any arguments from occurring in the hospital. The doors of the theatre opened and everyone except Kevin ran towards it "how is she" they all asked taking the doctor unaware. Startled by the question he replied, "she's fine but she unconscious due to her head injury which may have occurred when she fell". "Oh, thank goodness" Mike said as they all felt relieved. "Please can I see her" Sonia pleaded still in tears. "You can but wait for her to be sent to the ICU, then you can see her two at a time" the doctor replied raising two fingers to indicate what he meant. Little Lucy was transferred to the hospital suite reserved for the Young's. The Young family sat in silence, staring at little Lucy when the doctor came in accompanied by a nurse ' Ruby '. "We want to check on her and run a few procedures on her, please can you all step out" the doctor requested with a bow. "Let's leave" Lucas Young said gesturing to all of them. Ruby stared at all the family members in silence until her eyes fell on the man in the corner of the room, he was the same man who beat up the innocent man two weeks ago, he was also the one that pushed her to the ground earlier. Fear flashed through her eyes, he's aura was different from the rest of the family, it was cold and unwelcoming any normal person would avoid him. As they all stepped out one after the other Kevin step out last as they crossed paths the smell of blooming flowers hit his nostrils stopping, I'm in his tracks he had never smelled anything like that before and it left some kind of feeling inside of him, he stared at the face of the person who gave of such sweet smell 'f**k' he heard himself curse in his head. Her face was like nothing he had seen before, from her golden brown eyes to her plump red lips, it was like a new discovery he had never seen before. Ruby gulped in fear when she felt his eyes on her 'did I do something wrong' Ruby thought as she began to fondle with her fingers "sir please step out" the doctor said breaking the silence in the room before Kevin finally stepped out closing the door behind him. Kevin couldn't fathom what he felt when he stood near her. "Thank you" Anne said as she came up to Kevin. She had arrived a few seconds ago after she heard the news of the collapse. Without a response Kevin walked out of the corridor and left the hospital. He needed to clear his head.
