The city of Veridia never sleeps. Neither do its monsters.

Kade Mercer learned that lesson the night his father was murdered in front of him—beaten to death in their own dojo while Kade watched, thirteen years old and too weak to do anything but scream.

The killers wore silver masks. They left him alive. On purpose.

"Tell the boy," one of them said, "that the Ashen Circle sends their regards."

That was twelve years ago.

Now Kade is twenty-five, scarred inside and out, and he's spent every waking moment since that night preparing for one thing: hunting down every silver-masked bastard who took his father from him.

But no blade fights alone.

Chris Nakamura—his oldest friend, a former operative with a death wish and a mouth that never stops running. Chris lost his brother to the Ashen Circle. He laughs at danger because crying would break him.

William "Iron Will" Drake—a mountain of a man with fists like sledgehammers and a code of honor that borders on suicidal. He and Kade clash constantly. Two leaders. One goal. Zero compromise.

Mateo Reyes—the strategist. The ghost. He has connections in every underworld from Veridia to the Eastern Kingdoms. But his loyalty has limits, and Kade knows it.

Then there's Anna Volkov—cold, calculating, dangerous. A mafia princess who wants the Ashen Circle destroyed for reasons she won't share. She's an ally. Maybe. Until she's not.

And Quinn Ashford—a woman who moves like smoke and fights like a demon. She knows things about the Ashen Circle that no outsider should know. Kade doesn't trust her. But he might need her to survive.

The Ashen Circle isn't just a gang. They're a shadow empire with roots in something far older—the Order of Ash. An ancient society with plans that go beyond crime. Beyond power. Beyond this world.

When Kade discovers a hidden message his father left behind, he realizes the truth: his father wasn't just a martial arts instructor. He was a Guardian. And the Ashen Circle? They're hunting something Kade carries in his blood.

The Ember.

Now Kade must forge a brotherhood from broken men and uneasy allies. He must learn the forbidden Ashen Fist techniques his father died protecting. He must navigate a war between factions where every handshake hides a knife.

The road to revenge is paved with broken bodies.

Some will be his enemies. Some will be his friends. Some will be his.

But Kade made a vow the night his father died.

He will find them.

He will break them.

And he will burn their empire to the ground.

They thought they could break him.

They forgot that blades are forged in fire.

THE GHOST OF ASH STREET
The rain fell like God was trying to wash Veridia clean. It wasn't working. The city was too dirty. Too corrupt. Too far gone. The water slid off the rooftops and into the gutters, carrying the filth of a thousand sins into the Undercity below. The neon signs flickered. The sirens wailed in the distance. The city never slept. Neither did its monsters. Kade Mercer crouched on a fire escape, three stories above a dead-end alley in the Sprawl. His breath fogged in the cold night air. His fingers were numb inside his gloves. He'd been waiting four hours. Most men would have given up. Most men would have gone home. Most men would have told themselves it wasn't worth it. Kade wasn't most men. Below, a man in a silver mask was selling children. Not literally. The Ashen Circle was smarter than that. They called it "indentured service." "Job placement." "A better life." The paperwork was flawless. The contracts were ironclad. The chains were invisible. But Kade knew what happened to the kids who went with the silver-masked men. He'd seen the bodies wash up in the Undercity canals. He'd seen the empty eyes of the ones who came back. None of them ever came back whole. Not tonight, he thought. Not another one. He shifted his weight. The fire escape groaned. He froze. The man in the silver mask didn't look up. He was too busy counting the money. Ten thousand credits. Enough to buy a small army. Enough to buy a child's life. The child was young. Maybe twelve. Maybe thirteen. Dark hair. Hollow eyes. The kind of eyes that had seen too much. The kind of eyes that had stopped hoping a long time ago. Kade's jaw tightened. He knew those eyes. He'd seen them in the mirror every day since he was thirteen years old. The night his father died. The night everything changed. --- Twelve years ago. The memory came unbidden. It always did. The smell of burning wood. The sound of his father's screams. The silver masks. Kade had been thirteen. Just a boy. Too weak to fight. Too scared to run. He'd hidden behind a stack of training mats in the dojo, watching as five men in silver masks beat his father to death. They'd taken their time. They weren't in a hurry. They wanted Marcus Mercer to suffer. They wanted him to know why he was dying. "Tell the boy," one of them had said, crouching to meet Kade's tear-streaked face. The mask was inches away. The voice was calm. Almost kind. "Tell the boy that the Ashen Circle sends their regards." Kade had never forgotten that voice. He'd never forgotten the mask. He'd never forgotten anything. --- The man in the alley finished counting the money. He pocketed the credits. He grabbed the child by the arm. The child didn't resist. What was the point? Kade moved. He dropped from the fire escape, landing silently behind the man. His boots splashed in a puddle. The man spun around, reaching for his weapon. Too slow. Kade's fist connected with the man's throat. The mask cracked. The man staggered, gasping for air. Kade grabbed him by the collar and slammed him against the wall. "Where are the others?" Kade demanded. The man laughed. Blood on his lips. "You think I'm going to tell you anything, Mercer?" Kade's eyes narrowed. "You know my name." "Everyone knows your name. The Ashen Heir. The last of the Guardians. The one who's been hunting us for years." The man spat. "You're not a hunter. You're a rat. Running through the sewers. Chasing ghosts." Kade's grip tightened. "Where are the others?" "Go to hell." Kade's Ember flared. A faint red glow spread from his hands, warming the air. The man's eyes widened behind the cracked mask. "You're... you're one of them..." "I'm the last thing you'll ever see." Kade's voice was cold. "Now. Where. Are. The. Others." The man screamed. The Ember burned through his body—not enough to kill, but enough to hurt. Enough to make him talk. "Th-the compound! In the Ashfall! The Shepherd is there! He's the one who runs the operation! He's the one you want!" The Shepherd. Finally. A name. A target. Kade released the man. He crumpled to the ground, whimpering. Kade turned to the child. "Go home," he said. "Get out of the Sprawl. Find somewhere safe." The child stared at him. "There's nowhere safe." Kade had no answer to that. The child ran. Kade watched them disappear into the shadows. Then he turned back to the man. "One more thing," he said. "The Shepherd. Who is he?" The man laughed. Blood bubbled on his lips. "You think you're hunting us, Mercer? You're just following the breadcrumbs we left. The Order knows about you. They've always known. You're not the hunter. You're the bait." Kade's blood ran cold. "What?" "You're not the hunter. You're the bait. And you've been dancing on our strings since the day your father died." Kade's fist clenched. The Ember flared. He was about to strike— A gunshot rang out. The man's head snapped back. He crumpled to the ground. Dead. Kade spun around. A figure stood on the rooftop across the alley. Silver mask. Sniper rifle. Aiming at him. Kade dove behind a dumpster. Another shot. Sparks flew. He scrambled for cover, his heart pounding. The sniper fired again. Then again. Kade ran. He didn't look back. --- The Undercity was a different world. A city beneath a city. A labyrinth of tunnels and markets and safe houses where the law didn't reach and the sun didn't shine. Kade navigated the crowds, keeping his head down. The wound on his ribs throbbed. He'd taken a grazing shot during his escape. Nothing fatal. But it hurt like hell. He found an abandoned maintenance tunnel. He ducked inside. Silence. Darkness. Safety. He leaned against the wall, breathing hard. His father's voice echoed in his skull. "Revenge without purpose is just violence, Kade. Make your violence mean something." Kade closed his eyes. "Sorry, Dad. Tonight, it means Viktor goes in a body bag." Viktor. The man in the alley. A mid-level enforcer in the Ashen Circle. Not the Shepherd. But a start. Kade had been hunting the Ashen Circle for twelve years. Twelve years of training. Twelve years of fighting. Twelve years of bleeding. He'd killed dozens of their soldiers. Destroyed their operations. Cost them millions. But the Shepherd remained elusive. The Shepherd was the one who ran the child trafficking network. The Shepherd was the one who'd ordered his father's death. The Shepherd was the key to everything. And now Kade had a location. The Ashfall. The wasteland on the eastern edge of Veridia. A place where the ground still smoldered from a fire that had burned decades ago. A place where the Order had built their compound. Kade pulled out his father's journal. The leather was worn. The pages were yellowed. Most of the entries were cryptic. But one had always haunted him. "The Convergence comes. The Ember will burn. Protect the boy. He is the key. He is the fire. He is the end." Kade didn't know what it meant. But he knew it was important. His father had died protecting it. He tucked the journal back into his jacket. He pulled out his burner phone. He dialed a number. "Chris. It's me." "Kade?" The voice on the other end was groggy. "It's three in the morning. What do you want?" "I found a lead. The Shepherd. We meet tomorrow. Bring William. And tell Mateo to dig up everything he can on that name." "Shepherd? Like, sheep? You want me to look for a guy who herds sheep? Because I gotta say, Kade, that's a weird fetish—" "Chris." "Yeah, yeah. I'm on it. Try not to get stabbed again. You know how Maya gets when you show up bleeding." Kade almost smiled. Almost. "I'll try." He hung up. He looked at the journal one more time. Then he stood. The Ashfall was waiting. The Shepherd was waiting. The truth was waiting. Kade Mercer walked into the night. --- The dojo was cold. Dusty. Abandoned. Kade hadn't been here in years. Not since the night his father died. The building had been condemned after the fire. The city had never bothered to tear it down. It just sat there. A monument to everything he'd lost. He pushed open the door. The hinges creaked. The smell of ash and old memories filled his lungs. The training mats were still there. Rotted. Torn. The photographs on the walls were faded. His father's shrine was covered in dust. Kade knelt before it. He lit a candle. He placed his hand on the photograph of his father. "I'm coming for them, Dad," he whispered. "All of them. And I'm not stopping until the ash settles." He stayed there for a long time. Remembering. Grieving. Planning. When he finally stood, he felt something he hadn't felt in years. Hope. It was a dangerous thing. Hope. It could get you killed. It could break your heart. It could make you believe in things that weren't true. But Kade held onto it anyway. Because without hope, there was nothing. And Kade Mercer was not nothing. He was the Ashen Heir. The last Guardian. The son of Marcus Mercer. And he was going to burn the Ashen Circle to the ground. --- He was about to leave when he saw it. A mark on the wall. Fresh. Blood-red. Still dripping. It was a symbol. A circle. A flame. An eye. The symbol of the Ashen Circle. And beneath it, written in blood: WE KNOW WHERE YOU SLEEP. Kade's blood ran cold. His hand went to his blade. He scanned the room. Empty. Silent. But he wasn't alone. He could feel it. They'd been here. In his father's dojo. In his sanctuary. In his past. They'd left a message. Kade walked to the wall. He touched the blood. It was still warm. They'd been here minutes ago. Maybe seconds. He looked around. The dojo was small. There were only a few places to hide. He checked them all. Nothing. But on the floor, in the center of the room, was a single object. A silver mask. Kade picked it up. His hands were shaking. Not from fear. From rage. He stared at the mask. The empty eyeholes. The cruel smile carved into the metal. They were playing with him. They'd always been playing with him. But the game was about to change. Kade crushed the mask in his fist. The metal crumpled like paper. He dropped it to the floor. "Come and get me," he whispered. The night was silent. But Kade knew they were listening. He walked out of the dojo. Into the rain. Into the darkness. The hunt had begun.
