01. How I landed in jail.
I zoomed past down the dessert road, in a swift black escalade.
It was way past 9pm and the half moon was out. There was barely a star visible in the sky, thanks to a cloudy night skyline.
My mission was to get to the Mexican border. I'd be safe past the border, since I knew it wasn't The Verrono's territory they could venture too.
Who are the Verronos?
A family worth billions.
I was taken in by them three months ago, when my mother Anna died in a horrible car accident off a bridge.
She and her best friend Bella Verrono knew about my secret healing abilities.
It was one of the many reasons she'd taken me in, plus the fact she promised my mother she would look out for me.
In all honesty, I didn’t mind Bella taking me in. She'd always been kind and welcoming towards me, unlike her swan-like children who saw me as an eye sore when I first came to live with them.
What Bella failed to mention was the fact that, she hailed from a supernatural, deadly family.
I'd come along the way to get away from them, and I wasn't stopping now.
Suddenly, a cop car came from behind with it's blue sirens on.
Crap!!!
The worst part of my situation was that I didn't even have a licence.
No.
I stole this car due to my dire circumstances.
You see, I just witnessed a murder, back at the Verrono space.
Reader: Oh my god?! What happened? How did you witness? Did someone see you?Did you hide? Hurry up! Get on with the story, you're stressing me out!!!
Kiana: Hold your horses, I'm getting there! But first I better pull up, before the cop puts me in jail.
Actually.
Come to think of it. It won't be such a bad idea, if the cop catches me.
A wild idea struck my head and I quickly pulled over.
The cop car then pulled over.
A male cop came out of the car.
He approached my window and I sighed, pulling it down.
"Evening, young lady."
"What seems to be the problem, officer?" I dryly replied, as I gazed back at the cop dressed in a dark black uniform.
Looking at him closely, he kind of reminded me of a young Keanu Reeves from the movie Speed.
"May I see your licence please?" He asked in his strict tone of voice, as he discreetly looked at what I was wearing.
Nothing screamed Gucci or Prada about me. I was just a regular seventeen-year-old high school student who worked part time at a pizzeria called Reggie's.
I had a black vest top, followed by my brown hoody, skinny jeans and white running shoes. I wore a light brown hat over my head, which matched my light brown eyes and hair.
"I'm sorry I don't have it." The 5ft3 me boldly said.
"Oh, why is that?"
"I lost it." I lied straight through my teeth, which made him almost scoff.
"Well. That's a shame. Please step out of the vehicle." He asked in his polite tone of voice.
I braced myself, and carefully got out of the vehicle.
"Turn around and place your hands on the roof of the car, and tell me why you're driving a stolen car all the way from Washington DC?"
I let out a heavy sigh, not turning around, so he could do his search.
"Because I felt like it."
Then I suddenly sucker punched him so fast and turned on my heel and ran.
A sudden wire from the back came at me, and I felt waves of electricity shooting me down to a dead stop.
I groaned out, feeling all my whole body spazz out on the ground. Feeling like buzzing bees crawling through my skin, at a painful rate. I was stunned.
Keanu, just tased me.
My eyes suddenly blacked out, as I remained on the dark gravelled road perfectly still. I felt paralysed and weak, as my whole body soon relaxed, feeling heavy.
His partner came out of the car and quickly did a search of the car.
I could hear him opening the back of the booth and rummaging through it.
"Oh, she's carrying drugs." I heard him say.
Oops.
This stolen car was more bad news than I thought. Had I known it was carrying the drugs I wouldn't have broke into the car and stole it in the first place.
I felt my body then lift from the ground.
"She must be a mule, Scott."
No, I'm not!
"I'm taking this sleeping beauty back to the precinct. You take the car back."
When I came, too.
Officer 'Keanu' had me in cuffs, as I sat in front of his chair, when I came through.
"Welcome back, Miss Kiana Malhotra."
"How do you know my name officer?" I asked when I knew I hadn't given it to him.
"I'm Officer Scott Stackhouse, and I found your passport, in your duffle bag, along with your employee card, at Reggie's." He said.
"So, whose the drug dealer you work for?"
"I'm not a drug dealer!"
"Says the girl who was packing twenty tons of it in the car." chimed another officer who came through his office door.
"It's not mine I swear."
"And how can you prove this?"
"Because I just stole the car when the men went inside the casino."
"Scott, will you just take her pictures and put her in the lock up. You got paperwork to sign off." Said his bald-headed superior, who came by the door.
"On it, boss." Scott said looking at me his charming suspicious way.
"Ok, Kiana let's go."
I reluctantly ended up taking my mug shot.
Officer Scott then led me down the jail block cellers, where I got a couple of wolf whistles from the local sneering male prisoners.
Luckily, only a few were in tonight.
"Hey, knock it off!"
"What you in for cutey?" One of the prisoners made kissy noises at me, which I ignored.
"She stole a car and punched me in the face." Scott said opening my cell block and uncuffing my hands, before walking out and locking the door.
"Oooh, you bad girl." said criminal number 2 teased from the cell block opposite of me. He had half blonde and pink hair.
Officer Scott then retreated back out the main lock door of the cell and I reluctantly sat down at the bottom bunk bad.
This cell block was dark and dim lit and it literally smelt like bad news, of drugs, cigarettes and piss.
Urgh, I can’t even look at the unlid loo right now.
"So what's your name pretty?", Blondie Pink was trying to get my attention.
I simply ignored him.
"Aww c'mon pretty don't ignore Ricky, here."
"If Ricky doesn’t shutup, Gunner will." Said the other in-mate he was sharing the cell block with.
Ricky then turned towards Gunner in a very hostile, intimidating way, scaring the $hit out of me.
"What did you say, old man? You want to die?" Ricky threatened darkly.
Gunner then bashed his face up against the wall, causing me to gasp out. Ricky groaned out in more pain when Gunner the thirty- something year-old man then knocked him out cold with a back slap.
Ricky fell limp on the floor.
"I-Is he dead?" I squeaked out, getting dangerous Gunners attention.
"No. He's just sleeping." Gunner then hauled Ricky's body from the floor and plopped him up the top bunk.
He then returned his curious gaze at me.
"So what are you really in here for, kid?"
"What are you in here for?" I asked finding my brave yet curious voice again.
"A bank robbery gone bad. Ricky here took his time getting the safe girl to crack the code, when the cops came in on us."
"That sucks, Money Heist."
Gunner chuckled.
"So, kid, what you're really in for?"
"I stole the wrong car, which had drugs in it."
"Hmmm, but there's more to it than just that."
Gunner said as he observed me through his cell, like some kind of psychiatrist, analyzing me from where he stood.
"You're a run away aren't you?" He narrowed his eyes suspiciously.
Damn, money heist was good.
I sat back on the chair and sighed. Gunner was rather sharp.
"Don’t mind me kid. But, if were you, I'd tell Scott the truth. He can help you, if you're in trouble."
With the people who were chasing after me, I highly doubted that.
An hour later Officer Scott came back.
This time he pulled out a folding chair towards my cell block and hollered at me.
"Miss Malhotra. I hope you're not sleeping. My team have analysed the drugs found in the car. Your fingerprints aren't on any of them."
"So, you're letting me go?"
"No, you've still stolen a car, and I'm here to find out why. But before that. I've brought your phone. You're allowed one phone call."
I went towards the bar and took the phone from his hand.
I stared at the screen and I cursed out lightly underneath my breath.
I had no one to call. Not even my close friend Sam from back home. They'd probably stalk her to find out if I was there. No, I couldn't let her get involved with the f^cking dangerous fire flies.
"Don’t you want to call anyone, Miss Malhotra?" Officer Scott asked.
"It's just Kiana, and no. I don’t want to call anyone."
I handed him back the phone, knowing I'd made a back-up copy of a very important video in there. Even if my phone got taken away or destroyed, it didn't matter.
"Then tell me, why did you steal a drug cartel's car?"
Well, since this is going to be long night, and knowing Officer Scott was on my case. I looked at Gunner, who simply nodded his head, letting me know, it was ok to tell the patient looking officer the truth.
"I'm on the run from someone very dangerous. I didn’t mean to steal the car officer, but they were after me. I had no choice."
I paced back and fourth.
"If they come looking for me, I'm good as dead." My eyes brimmed with tears.
Scott looked at me with all his attention, including Gunner from the opposite side.
"That's why you punched my face, so I'd take you in?"
"Yes, and I'm sorry about that." I said with my slipped down with tears.
"Hey, kid don't cry. It's going to be ok."
"No, it's not Mr Gunner. These guys are bad news." I said trying to wipe away my tears.
"Calm down Kiana. Whose is coming after you?"
"Henry Verrono. The one whom I saw killed a person out in his barn."
