Ridiculous

Chapter 17 Elena Adams ~•~ When I got back to my room, I released a long and deep breath. “f**k, these men are crazy,” I muttered to myself as I sat down on the bed. When Chase held me, I felt something. I couldn’t deny the fact that my body had reacted before my mind could catch up. It wasn’t strong like Damien… but it wasn’t nothing either. And that was what scared me the most. I was already in a messy situation, and giving in to Chase’s temptation was going to make everything worse. Why wouldn’t he leave me alone? Maybe I did the right thing by laughing at his face. At least, he would get embarrassed and stay away from me. The next day, we had breakfast as usual. I could feel the tension in the dining room, and I tried my best to avoid eye contact with both of them. My mom, on the other hand, was oblivious about what was happening. Well, neither Chase nor Damien knew about what was actually happening either. The silence was deafening. After a while, my mom broke the silence. “So, I was thinking,” she said brightly, placing her fork down. “Elena should officially start at the company next week.” My stomach dropped. Next week? That was too soon. “No, mom. I don’t think I’m ready,” I said quickly before they would make the decision for me again. “I want to finalize the divorce process before I start something else… I just want to be done with that phase of my life first.” Chase looked up and tilted his head at me. “You’re still married?” He asked with a hint of amusement in his voice. He probably wasn’t expecting it. Maybe he thought I’d already finalized the divorce process before moving in with my mom. I nodded slowly. “Yes, I’m still married.” Chase would probably back off if he realized that my ex wasn’t out of the picture completely. Most men didn’t like sharing. “Wow,” he muttered under his breath. “What’s taking so long?” he added, his voice laced with curiosity.” I took a bite from my chicken, chewed it slowly, before responding to him. “Lucas is being an asshole.” “Lucas… that’s his name?” Damien replied before anyone could say anything else. My gaze shifted to him. I could tell that he didn’t mean to say that out loud. He was probably jealous too. “Yes, that’s his name,” I replied sharply. “So what is he saying?” Chase continued, shooting me an inquisitive look. “He doesn’t want to sign the papers?” “Yeah,” I replied flatly. Chase’s expression changed for a moment. But he quickly masked it. I could tell he was upset about the situation. But if he overreacted in front of my mom and his dad, they would get suspicious of his intentions towards me. I was glad he didn’t say anything else. “You need to get a good lawyer,” Chase finally said, clearing his throat. “The guy was an asshole, and he has no right to hold you back.” “Damien is working on getting her a good lawyer to handle the process,” my mom chimed in on the conversation. “Everything is going to be okay soon.” Damien? My heart skipped a beat. When I went to my mom for help, I didn’t think she would involve Damien. I didn’t want him to have anything to do with my divorce process. I didn’t need his help. But I didn’t say anything at that moment, I just let out a deep exhale. I would talk to my mom about it after breakfast. Soon enough, the conversation died down and we continued eating our food in silence. I ate quickly and left the dining room. But I didn’t go back to my room. I went outside, strolling around the compound. Since I came to live at their house, I haven’t left the gates. I’d been inside and it was getting boring. As I walked around, my phone buzzed, interrupting me. I reached for my pocket and pulled it out. When I saw the name flashing across the screen, my face formed into a frown. Lucas. Why the hell was he calling me? Letting out a deep sigh, I answered the phone and placed it closer to my ear. Before I could say anything, I asked rudely, “What the hell do you want?” The soft spot I had for Lucas was gone, so I didn’t bother to be nice to him anymore. “I heard you’re now living with your mom and her what?” he asked, his voice carrying a sharp edge of mockery. “Sixth, or is it the tenth husband?” My jaw tightened. “Don’t talk about my mom like that,” I warned. “And if you don’t have anything useful to say, I’ll be hanging up right now.” “Wait, wait, wait, don’t hang up,” he replied quickly. “Do you think your mom did a great job by asking you to leave our house? Do you think that it’s a way of looking out for you?” I didn’t answer his question. He only made me feel more irritated. “Your mom’s love life is a mess, and she wants you to be as miserable as her,” he continued. “So don’t get a divorce, just come back home and we can fix our marriage.” Lucas was ridiculous. Did he just insult my mom and ask me to move back with him right after? He must be really delusional and stupid. I had no idea when I started laughing at his ridiculousness. “You think I am joking?” he asked with a hint of frustration in his voice. “I know I made a mistake, but don’t let it ruin what we had.” I couldn’t believe I was having that kind of conversation with him. “Lucas, sign the divorce papers or you’re going to end up in jail.” With that, I ended the call. I didn’t have time for his unreasonable requests. I shoved my phone back into my pocket and let out a deep exhale. On the bright side, I was glad that I had Damien. He made moving on from my ex-husband easier.
