CHAPTER 1 (EPISODE 1): THE DEAL
Alexandra Whitfield had learned a long time ago that the difference between a good liar and a great one was conviction. She smoothed the front of her navy Givenchy dress, checked her reflection in the darkened window of the Sinclair Building's private elevator, and reminded herself: tonight, she needed to be great. The elevator doors opened onto the fortieth floor, all glass and hushed money, and a receptionist who looked like she'd been poured into her blazer offered a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "Mr. Sinclair is expecting you, Ms. Whitfield." Of course he is. Alex had made sure of that herself, three phone calls, one very pointed email, and a favor called in from a mutual friend who owed her for burying a scandal involving a senator and a yacht. Nathaniel Sinclair's office looked exactly like she'd imagined: floor-to-ceiling windows over Manhattan, a desk too large for any real work to happen on it, and the man himself standing at the window with his jacket off and his sleeves rolled to the forearm, like he'd stepped out of a cologne ad and forgotten to leave. "Ms. Whitfield." He didn't turn around right away. "I have to say, I'm curious what a PR consultant wants badly enough to blackmail her way into my calendar." "I didn't blackmail anyone." "You told my assistant you had information that would 'materially affect the Sinclair Maritime IPO' if I didn't see you today." He turned then, and the full weight of his attention landed on her like a hand at the small of her back. "That's blackmail with better manners." "That's called getting a meeting." Alex set her bag down and did not sit, because sitting first was a mistake she'd made exactly once in her career. "And I do have information that affects your IPO. Just not the kind you're imagining." Nate's mouth curved, not quite a smile, more the promise of one, the kind that had launched a thousand gossip column inches. "Enlighten me." "Bertrand Holloway won't sign off on the underwriting unless he believes you're a changed man." She let that sit for a second. "And by changed, I mean unmarried-but-clearly-heading-that-way. Holloway's old money, old values. He doesn't trust a bachelor with your reputation to steward client funds responsibly. He's said as much, off the record, to three people who all happen to talk to me." Something shifted behind Nate's eyes, the amusement didn't leave, but something colder moved in underneath it. "And you know this because?" "Because I represent his daughter's charity foundation, and because it's my job to know things before they become problems." She finally sat, crossing her legs, taking her time about it. "You have a Holloway problem, Mr. Sinclair. I have a solution." "Which is?" "Me." The word landed harder than she meant it to, and she watched him take a beat too long to respond, his gaze doing a slow pass over her that felt less like an appraisal and more like he was recalculating something. "You want to date me," he said finally, "for my IPO." "I want to appear to date you." She kept her voice even, businesslike, the same tone she used to tell CEOs their apology statements needed a full rewrite. "Six weeks. Photographed at the right events, seen at the right restaurants, enough public affection to convince Holloway and everyone else that Nathaniel Sinclair has finally settled down. Then, quietly, we drift apart. No scandal. No mess. Your IPO closes, my firm gets the credit for cleaning up your image, and everybody wins." "And what do you get out of it, besides the credit?" Alex hesitated, one beat, no more, but she saw him catch it. "Holloway's foundation account is worth eight figures to my firm if I land it. This deal is how I land it." "Ambitious," Nate said, and it wasn't a compliment or an insult, just an observation, turned over like a coin. "I didn't get where I am being modest." He walked toward her then, slower than necessary, and stopped just far enough away that she had to tilt her chin up slightly to keep looking at him, which she suspected he'd calculated. "You understand what you're asking," he said. "My grandfather is dying, Ms. Whitfield. He's not stupid, and he's spent seventy years reading people for a living. If I bring you to his birthday gala in three weeks and he doesn't believe it, this doesn't just fail, it makes things worse." For the first time since she'd walked in, Alex heard something underneath the charm, not performance, but pressure. A version of Nathaniel Sinclair that didn't make it into the tabloids. "Then we make him believe it," she said, quieter now. "I'm good at my job. Are you good at yours?" His eyes narrowed, but there was interest in it now, sharp and real. "Careful. That almost sounded like a challenge." "It was."
