Prologue
“Amira, can you pass me the stapler beside you?” I smiled at Maddy and then reached my hand to grab the stapler before giving it to her. She’s my sister.
We are together with our friend Febi who is currently doing her thesis.
“Maddy, I want to be just like you! I want to become a Magna c*m Laude once I graduate next year.”
I didn’t speak a word and just listened carefully. Febi is a good friend of mine. She is my classmate and a close friend since grade school. And truth to be told, her mother works under my parents which made us inseparable since we were small.
My parents have always taught me to not judge other people unfairly and to treat them equally. To them, it doesn’t matter if you came from a lower status or at a higher one, all you have to do is to treat everyone fairly.
This is my third year in business administration, I haven’t given my best yet but I already have everything that I need in my life: money, power, intelligence and popularity.
“Don’t worry Febi, I know you can do it. Amira and I believe in you.” I looked at them and signed thumbs up. I know that she’s doing her best but why would she force something that does not exist? To prove that she can excel? That she’s good at everything? Or to impress other people so she can receive praises or more?
”Yes, I know that you are good at everything, Febi. I know you can do it,” I said while smiling but damn… until when am I supposed to be a good person here.
How long do I need to pretend that I actually meant every word that comes out of my mouth? Sometimes, it’s so tiresome to act so well. It just makes me want to barf and throw insults instead, and not just simple insults, words that can really pierce through you.
“Thank you Amira! You are one of my inspirations! Even if you have everything already, you still stay humble and kind! I’m so proud that I’m a friend of yours!” Febi embraced me into a tight hug.
I honestly wanted to push her away but I stopped myself.
“Dear, let’s go, we’re going home.” Febi’s mother came out and smiled at me. She works under my Papa’s management as a maid.
I felt more irritated when I saw Febi’s suitor outside the garden. Well, she has a lot of suitors despite her poor upbringing and one of them is a varsity player who is just the same level as she is; from a lower status.
Honestly, there’s another one. A man who just recently transferred to our school. He’s known as one of the richest among our batch.
I rolled my eyes. If I were a man, I would think twice about courting this woman. She looks so plain in my eyes that if I were to court her, I’d choose to walk out on the door and leave.
Febi is so out of style. A woman of fair coloration and definitely, a person who lacks social skills. She acts like a dead person most of the time, which makes me want to ask her suitors about what they saw in her.
I walked towards their direction and immediately stopped them. “Can I borrow Troy for a second? I want to ask him something.” I pulled onto his sleeves and immediately dragged him away from a distance.
“What are you doing here? Who gave you the permission to step in my own house?” I asked and he looked at me with disgust on his face.
“If Febi only knew your attitude and what you really think of her–“ I cut him off.
“I don’t care and can you please stop courting her? There are a lot of fine women in the university so why settle for less? Find someone else!” I said, hissing.
The man then furrowed his brows but managed to give me a smile; a sarcastic smile.
“If you’re the fine woman you’re talking about then I’d rather die.”
