When April first agrees to marry Hayden, it’s clear that she’s not entirely sure of what she’s getting into. The marriage is framed by family obligations, with pressure from both sides to uphold tradition. Hayden, though outwardly confident and composed, hides his own reservations about the arrangement. He’s a man who values his independence and his business empire, which he has built from the ground up. The notion of a marriage based on anything other than love challenges his values, but he does it for family, as much as for his own sense of obligation.

Chapter 1: Torn Between Love and Duty
April Perez stood at the floor-to-ceiling windows of her sleek New York City apartment, gazing out over the sprawling metropolis below. The city was alive, pulsing with energy, a cacophony of sounds drifting through the glass—distant car horns, the rush of pedestrian footsteps, and the occasional screech of the subway that tunneled beneath the streets. It was a city that never stopped, but right now, April felt disconnected from it all, like she was watching from the outside. The apartment itself was a modern marvel. White walls with minimalist black-and-white artwork framed the space, and sleek, angular furniture gave the whole place an airy, high-end feel. The floor was polished oak, smooth and gleaming in the ambient light. Soft, neutral colors dominated the space, with accents of gold and silver that reflected the upscale lifestyle she had cultivated over the years. The large windows let in a flood of natural light, offering a stunning view of the skyline. April had made this space her sanctuary, a place of peace amidst the chaos of her high-powered legal career. But today, peace was the last thing she felt. The soft sound of her phone buzzing on the coffee table broke the silence, dragging her out of her reverie. She glanced at the screen and saw a text from Carlton, her boyfriend. "We need to talk. I don’t know how much longer I can do this..." The words hit her like a punch to the stomach. Carlton was the love of her life—or at least, he had been. They had been together for two years, but lately, cracks had begun to form in their relationship. Ever since her promotion to partner at the law firm, things had shifted. She was now being asked to head the Los Angeles office, and the physical distance between them would create an emotional distance as well. Carlton had always been a steady presence in her life, but now he seemed uncertain, struggling with jealousy and insecurity. April had tried to assure him, to make it work, but long-distance relationships were hard, especially when your partner didn’t believe they could survive the distance. April set her phone down and ran a hand through her hair, frustration building inside her. It was supposed to be a fresh start, a promotion that would mark the pinnacle of her career. But now, all she felt was the pressure of her parents’ expectations, the weight of the arranged marriage that loomed over her like a dark cloud. Her phone buzzed again. Another message from Carlton: "I don’t want to lose you, April. But I need more than just words. You need to choose, because I don’t think I can wait forever." She bit her lip, staring at the screen, unsure how to respond. But deep down, she knew what was coming. She knew that her parents, ever the traditionalists, had already arranged for her to marry Hayden Achibold, the heir to a vast fortune and the CEO of a rapidly growing tech empire. The marriage wasn’t about love—it was about business. Her parents had threatened to pull her partnership at the law firm if she didn’t comply. It was a deal that had been sealed long before April had even been born, a way to secure the future of both families. The reality of it hit her like a wave. She couldn’t lose her career, but she didn’t want to lose Carlton either. She wiped a tear from her eye, her chest tight with emotion. What had happened to the woman who had dreamed of running her own firm, of finding love on her own terms? Her thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a knock on the door. She didn’t need to look to know who it was. She had told her parents she would be leaving for Los Angeles in the morning. The familiar sense of dread crept up her spine as she walked toward the door, her heels clicking softly on the hardwood floor. She opened the door, and there he stood—Carlton. His eyes were tired, filled with frustration and confusion. "April," he began, stepping inside without waiting for an invitation, his voice softer now, the tension between them palpable. "I don’t know how much longer I can do this. Every time I try to talk to you, it’s like you’re... somewhere else. Your job, your family... it feels like you’re slipping away from me. You’re always so focused on what they want, and you’re not really... here." April swallowed, her throat tight. "I didn’t want it to be like this, Carlton. You know that." "I don’t know if I can believe that anymore," he snapped, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "I’ve tried. I’ve tried to support you. But this? You’re moving across the country. I can’t do it, April. I can’t wait forever." She could feel the sting of his words, but she knew deep down that he was right. The weight of her parents' expectations, the looming arranged marriage, and the responsibility of her career had clouded everything. She had neglected him, even though she never meant to. "I understand," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I never wanted it to be like this. But this is what’s happening. You know what my parents want. You know I can’t just... leave everything behind. This marriage is already set. They’ve already arranged it, and if I don’t go through with it, I’ll lose everything." Carlton’s eyes flashed with hurt. "So, what? You expect me to just sit here and wait for you? To accept this marriage like it’s some kind of business deal?" His voice rose, angry now, the raw emotion spilling over. "I never wanted this for either of us," April replied, tears welling up in her eyes. "But if I don’t go through with it, I’ll lose my job, my career. I can’t afford to lose that. I thought we could make it work, I really did. But... we can’t. We both need different things now. And I don’t expect you to wait for me. I’ll be happy if you find love, Carlton. I want you to be happy." Carlton stood there, silent for a moment. His anger ebbed away, replaced by something else—sadness, maybe, or resignation. Slowly, he stepped closer to her, his voice gentler now. "I never thought it would come to this," he said, his hand reaching for hers. "But I understand now. You have to do what you have to do. We both do." They stood there in silence for a few seconds, both of them processing the weight of their words. And then, unexpectedly, Carlton pulled her into a tight hug. She closed her eyes, savoring the warmth of his embrace, but the hug felt different now. It wasn’t the passionate, longing embrace of a couple in love—it was the bittersweet embrace of two people who had come to terms with the end of something they had once shared. "I'm sorry, April," he murmured into her hair. "I really thought we could make it work." April pulled back slightly, looking into his eyes one last time. "I’m sorry, too. For everything. You deserve more than I can give right now." Carlton nodded, his lips curling into a small, sad smile. "I just want you to be happy. I’ll always care about you, April." April smiled faintly through the tears that threatened to spill. "I’ll always care about you, too." And with that, he left. The door clicked shut behind him, leaving April standing in the stillness of the apartment. The city outside was still bustling, life moving forward, as it always did. But inside, everything felt different now. The future she had been so sure of was now uncertain, the weight of her parents’ expectations heavier than ever. She closed her eyes, steadying herself. There was no going back now. And as much as it hurt, she knew it was time to face the future head-on.
