Chapter 2

Kira POV I stood in the center of the packhouse yard, scrubbing the wooden floorboards as the morning sun climbed higher to sky. Around me, pack life bustled, warriors sparring, children playing around with smile on there faces, and high-ranking members chatting like they ruled the whole world. No one paid attention to me and whatever I was doing. Why would they? I was nothing more than an omega, a living shadow moving around to keep things running smoothly and unappreciated. But that wasn’t entirely true. We weren’t unseen in this pack or this world. We were just ignored unless someone needed a scapegoat. “Move, omega!” a voice barked from behind pushing me aside. I scrambled out of the way just in time as a warrior strode past, not bothering to glance down. My knees scraped against the rough wood, and I bit back a wince. “Careful, Kira,” came a voice above me. “Wouldn’t want you to get hurt. Who’d clean up the mess I would make later?” I looked up to find Leo leaning casually against a nearby post. His dark blond hair fell over his sharp cheekbones, and his blue eyes gleamed with a mix of amusement and something colder. He was the beta heir, second only to Rylan, and he loved reminding me of my place. “I’m fine,” I muttered, returning to my work, and not trying to give him another gaze. “Of course you are doing well, Omega” Leo said, his tone light but laced with mockery. “Omegas are tough in there own way, aren’t they? All that scrubbing builds character.” I ignored him, my hands moving faster. “You know,” he continued, crouching so we were at eye level, “if you worked a little harder, maybe Rylan would notice you. Or not. You’re just an omega, after all.” “Leave her alone, Leo.” My head snapped up at the sound of Dax’s voice. The warrior leader stood a few feet away, his arms crossed over his broad chest. His dark eyes locked on Leo with a quiet intensity that made the beta heir straighten. “Relax, Dax,” Leo said with an intruding but yet beautiful smirk. “I’m just making conversation and nothing more.” “Doesn’t look like it,” Dax replied. He turned his gaze to me, his expression unreadable. “You okay?” I hesitated, unsure how to respond. No one asked if I was okay in this pack so why was he even asking me such question. “I’m fine,” I said softly, keeping my eyes down. " Just be safe around the pack unless you'd be insulted." His words sounded more caring than anything. As I was about taking those words in, Leo let out an immediate laughter that made myself shift my gaze to him. " Dax, why pitying her." He laughed out." She's a mere slave that can't even amount to anything." " Leo, can you just stop for once and let her do her cleaning." Leo immediately turned his laughter to a frown and accepted those words of dax. " Just do your thing." He said. " Okay," I forced a smile to my pale face. Dax nodded once before walking away, his presence like a storm cloud that had passed. The day dragged on with duties after duties, and by the time the pack gathered in the main hall, my legs ached from standing too long. I lingered near the back, hoping to avoid attention as Rylan entered. He moved with the confidence of someone who knew he was destined to rule. His silver eyes scanned the room, sharp and calculating, and the crowd parted for him like the sea. Rylan was everything I wasn’t, strong, powerful, respected. And cruel. “Rylan!” Eldra called out, striding to his side with her usual grace. Her green eyes sparkled as she looped her arm through his. “We’re discussing patrol rotations. Care to weigh in?” “Later,” Rylan said dismissively, his gaze landing on me. My breath hitched as his eyes narrowed around the whole hall. “You,” he said, his voice like ice cold. “Why are you standing around? Get to work immediately and stop lazing around.” Heat rose to my cheeks, and I quickly bowed my head in respect. “Yes, Alpha.” “I don’t want excuses next time, Kira,” he snapped. “Do something useful for yourself, or leave. Omegas don’t get to take up space in meeting halls.” " I would definitely do as you said, Alpha." " Then move out already and stop poke noising into pack affairs." He said with an anger filled face. My hands clenched into fists, but I kept my head low in form of respect. I couldn’t afford to fight back or even talk back against his own Very bwords. Not against him. Not even against the smallest person in this world. By the time the meeting ended for the day, the tension in the room was palpable. As I cleaned up the mess left behind, I overheard snippets of conversation. “The patrols near the Forbidden Forest need to be doubled for the attack,” Dax was saying with a more intense and serious tone. “There’s been rogue activity moving around there than our warrior.” “And you think they’ll strike here?” Rylan asked, his tone skeptical. “It’s possible they would,” Dax replied. " Rogues are more stronger than any other thing we May want to relate with." Dax added with a more serious voice. " So, what are you trying to say." Rylan questioned with a think voice. “Better safe than sorry.” I paused, my ears straining to catch their words. The Forbidden Forest was so dangerous, a place even the bravest warriors avoided. But the mention of rogues sent a chill down my spine. “Let them try,” Rylan said coldly. “We’ll crush them like the pests they are.” As I carried the trash outside, the wind shifted, carrying with it a strange, metallic scent. My heart pounded as I froze, my eyes darting toward the forest. Was that that smell of… blood?
