BRIAR’S POV The ringing in my ears finally stops, allowing me to hear the echo of her steps slowly drawing closer. I’m too terrified and immobilized to move, my fight-or-flight response failing me when I need it the most. Once she’s close enough, standing just above me, she begins to whisper a chant. Her voice is more grotesque and deeper, both of her hands raised and directed towards me. “In shadows deep where darkness creeps, I call upon the powers that silently seep. From graves below where spirits go, I summon thee, to make my enemy know…” The air between us begins to shift, growing more violent with every passing second. It ripples dangerously, strong enough to lift either of us off the floor—almost like a tornado indoors. It takes everything in me not to be lifted away.
