Chapter 1
IVANA 'S POV My heart was racing as I stood in front of my boss. I broke something valuable at the convenient store , and I knew my boss was going to be really mad at me. "Ivana , how could you be so careless?" "What did you do?" my boss asked in a harsh voice. The item was very costly, and now it's broken. "What am I going to do?" I said, "I'm so sorry, sir," and I could feel the hot shame rising in her cheeks. "I meant not to break it." It was a mistake. "A mistake ?!" My boss yelled, and the anger on his face turned red. As my boss yelled at me, I stood there frozen with fear. My face was red from the stress, and I thought I must look like a tomato. My voice was weak and shaky when I tried to talk. "I'm sorry, I really didn't," I said in a voice that was almost a whisper. "I'm so sorry, I'll do whatever it takes to fix it." "It can't be fixed, how do you think you can fix it?" That's why I don't hire teens, I can't do anything about this because you're not supposed to work here. The boss sighed. It looked like my boss was trying to calm down by taking a big breath. He added, "I need to think about this," but his voice was still rough. "You're lucky that this could be taken out of your monthly payment, because you would have paid for it before leaving here today." A customer walked into the store in the middle of all the chaos. I was upset about my boss's anger that I didn't even notice the person who came in. But when I turned around to see who it was, I saw a nice-looking man standing there. "Hey, is everything all right?" The guy asked with worry in his voice. "It seems like there's a bit of a commotion here." My boss turned to the man and looked angry again. "There's been a bit of an accident, and we're trying to figure out what to do." "Why don't I pay for the broken item?" The customer took out his pocket to pay for the broken item. He then bought a few other things. I saw him pay for his things and then turn around to leave. "Thank you so much," I said with a grateful voice that was still weak. "I truly appreciate what you did." He smiled at me when he turned around. "Thank you. It is not a problem at all. That was it. He walked out of the store, leaving me both glad and a little amazed. I sat down in the corner and tried to figure out what had happened. My boss's temper tantrum made me feel terrible, and I couldn't stop thinking about what I did wrong. I was sorry for what I did but didn't know how to fix it. The broken things have been paid for, but my boss doesn't seem like a good person.I thought about how hard things had been in my life lately. It was hard for me to make ends meet, and I felt like I could hardly hold it together. I thought about how important it was for me to do well for my family. Their expectations made me feel heavy, and I didn't know how to live up to them. It had always been hard for my mum and me to make ends meet. She had a job where she cleaned people's homes for money. Part-time I worked at the convenience store to try to make enough money to help my mum and my lazy uncle get by. We were just getting by, and I knew I had to do better. It was important to me to give my mom a better life, and I felt like my recent behaviour was letting her down. I saw that my hands were shaking when I looked down at them. I became aware that I was shaking all over and had no control over it. It didn't help to take deep breaths, so I took some pills to calm down. "I wish I had a father." This thought kept my mind occupied. That day when my mum told me my dad had died came back to mind. Even though I was young, I remember how sad her eyes were as she told me the story. She broke down in tears as she said, "Your dad worked hard." "He was always so careful at the petrol station where he worked." But one day there was a big explosion . He didn't make it through the terrible accident.I had a strong bond with my father even though I had never met him. I'd always felt like there was a hole in my life that he should have filled. I was deep in thought when the door opened and a customer came in. Took myself out of my trance and smiled at the customer. They left after I helped them find what they were looking for. The store was finally close down. After counting the money in the register, I shut the doors and locked them. Now that I was by myself, I could take a moment to think. Though, I tried to calm my mind, but I could tell something wasn't right.A young man was standing at the end of the road. He did nothing but stand there and stare at me. I quickly walked home because I felt weird in my stomach. I turned around and saw that he was still there, watching me. It made my heart beat fast, and I quickly became scared. Trying to get home as quickly as possible, I sped up. I felt like someone was following me no matter how fast I walked. I felt like I was about to lose control as my fear turned into panic. I swerved into a different lane in the hopes of getting away from him. But when I turned the corner, he was already there. He smiled at me in a way that made me feel cold ."What do you want?" My voice was shaking as I asked. "I just want to talk to you," he said in a low, scary voice. "Come with me." I stepped back because I was scared fear was taking over my body. "No," I said with a strong voice. "I'm never going anywhere with you."
