CHAPTER TWELVE : THE FREQUENCY OF HEAVEN

2282 Words
Elena began hearing the sound three days later. At first, she thought it was an electrical problem. A faint ringing. Almost too high to be called a sound. It appeared whenever the house became quiet. At night. Early in the morning. Sometimes when she was alone in her room. It wasn’t unpleasant. But it was impossible to ignore. It seemed to vibrate somewhere behind her ears rather than inside them. Elena sat at her desk one evening, trying to read. There it was again. Eeeeeee. She lowered the book. Silence. The sound continued. She covered her ears. Nothing changed. Elena frowned. She stood and walked toward the window. The sound became louder. She opened the window. It became louder still. But outside, the street was completely silent. No cars. No voices. No music. Nothing that could explain it. She closed the window. The sound softened. Elena stared at it. “Okay.” She sat down again. Five minutes passed. Then the sound changed. It became a low vibration. Hmmmmmm. Elena felt it in her chest. She froze. The sensation wasn’t painful. It was almost like standing beside a huge speaker, except there was no speaker. The vibration moved through her ribs. Then her hands began tingling. Elena looked down. Tiny golden sparks flickered beneath her skin. She immediately stood. The sound stopped. The sparks disappeared. Her heart pounded. “What is happening to me?” A knock sounded. Elena jumped. Her father entered. “You okay?” “Do you hear that?” Daniel looked around. “Hear what?” Elena listened. Nothing. “The ringing.” “What ringing?” “Never mind.” Daniel studied her. “Elena.” “I’m fine.” He didn’t look convinced. “You’ve been asking strange questions lately.” “I’ve been experiencing strange things.” “That’s what worries me.” Elena looked at him. “Do you remember when I was little?” “Of course.” “Did I ever complain about sounds?” Daniel’s expression changed. “What kind?” “Ringing. Vibrations. Voices that nobody else could hear.” He went quiet. Elena noticed. “Dad?” “When you were six.” Her heart skipped. “What happened when I was six?” “You woke us up one night.” “Why?” “You said the house was singing.” Elena stared at him. “The house?” “You kept saying there was music inside the walls.” “What did it sound like?” “I don’t know.” “You couldn’t hear it?” “No.” “What did I say?” Daniel hesitated. “You said it wasn’t music.” “What was it?” He looked at her. “You said it was a language.” ⸻ That night, Elena couldn’t stop thinking about it. She searched through her childhood memories. Nothing. Only fragments. A bedroom. A nightlight. Her mother’s voice. A golden glow. And something else. A sound. She closed her eyes. There it was. The frequency. The same one. Except now she could distinguish something within it. A pattern. Three notes. Then two. Then three again. Elena sat up. She grabbed a notebook and began writing. Three. Two. Three. The sound changed. Three. Two. One. She stopped. “That’s not random.” She listened carefully. The sound seemed to move around her. From the window. To the wall. Then the floor. Then directly behind her. Elena turned. Nothing. But the sound remained. She whispered: “Where are you coming from?” The frequency changed. For a moment, Elena heard a voice beneath it. “Above.” She froze. She looked toward the ceiling. “Who said that?” No answer. Then the sound returned. Higher. Brighter. And suddenly Elena felt warmth spread through her entire body. She closed her eyes. She saw stars. Not the stars above Earth. Something much closer. Vast fields of light. Golden pathways. White towers. And hundreds of voices singing. Elena couldn’t understand the words. But she understood the feeling. Peace. Love. Home. Then something interrupted the sound. A deep, distorted vibration. The beautiful frequency vanished. Elena opened her eyes. The room was cold. She knew that feeling. The same wrongness. The same sensation she’d felt whenever the false woman appeared. But this time, she sensed it before seeing anything. Someone was nearby. Elena turned toward her bedroom door. The handle slowly moved. She stepped backward. The door opened. Nobody was there. Then she heard it. A whisper beneath the silence. “Elena.” She didn’t answer. The whisper came again. “Elena.” Her skin prickled. “Who are you?” Silence. Then— “Not Elena.” Elena’s heart began pounding. “What?” The voice whispered: “Aurelia.” The lights went out. ⸻ Elena didn’t scream. Somehow, she couldn’t. She stood in complete darkness, listening. The frequency had returned. But this time, it wasn’t coming from outside. It was coming from her. A vibration moved through her chest. Her heartbeat seemed to synchronize with it. Boom. The frequency. Boom. The frequency. Her palms began glowing. A faint golden light illuminated the room. Elena stared at her hands. “What…” The light moved up her arms. She felt something awaken beneath her skin. Not pain. Recognition. Like her body knew something her mind didn’t. Then she heard voices. Hundreds. Thousands. All around her. Some were singing. Some were speaking. Some were whispering her name. She could suddenly hear them clearly. Aurelia. Aurelia. Aurelia. Elena covered her ears. “Stop!” The voices became louder. Then one voice rose above all the others. Seraphiel. “Don’t fight it.” Elena opened her eyes. “Where are you?” “Listen.” “I am listening!” “Not with your ears.” Elena froze. “What?” “Listen with what you are.” The golden light brightened. Elena closed her eyes. She stopped trying to hear the sound. Instead, she felt it. The vibration passed through her. And suddenly— she understood. The sound wasn’t coming from Heaven. It was connecting Heaven to her. A bridge. A frequency. A thread between two worlds. Elena’s breathing slowed. The voices became clearer. Then she heard something else. A single voice. A child’s voice. Her own. “I remember.” Elena’s eyes opened. The golden light disappeared. The room returned to normal. She stood there trembling. Then she noticed something on her desk. A small golden feather. She reached for it. The instant she touched it, another memory flashed through her mind. She was five years old. Standing in the golden meadow. The six-winged woman was kneeling beside her. But this time, Elena heard their conversation clearly. “You won’t remember me.” “Why?” “Because you must grow without knowing what you are.” “Will I be alone?” “No.” “Who will be with me?” The woman smiled. “The Most High will never leave you.” Young Elena looked toward the light. “Will I see Him?” “One day.” “Will I know Him?” “You already do.” The memory vanished. Elena gasped. Tears streamed down her face. She whispered: “She wasn’t lying.” The six-winged woman from her childhood had been real. The one in her recent dreams was not. Someone had taken the form of a being she once trusted. And Elena’s newly awakened senses had recognized the difference. ⸻ The next morning, Elena went to see Seraphiel. She found him exactly where she expected. The old church. He stood near the altar. “You heard it.” Elena stopped. “You knew.” “I suspected.” “The sound.” “Yes.” “What is it?” “A frequency.” “I know.” Seraphiel smiled. “You are beginning to understand.” “Why can I hear it?” “Because most humans perceive only a narrow portion of what exists around them.” “And I don’t?” “No.” “What else can I hear?” “That depends on how much you awaken.” Elena frowned. “Can I hear Heaven?” “Sometimes.” “Can I hear angels?” “If they choose to reveal themselves.” “Can I hear things humans aren’t supposed to hear?” Seraphiel looked at her. “You already have.” Elena remembered the voice. The false woman. The creature. The sound. “Can I hear you even when you’re not here?” Seraphiel smiled. “Perhaps.” Elena crossed her arms. “That’s not an answer.” “It’s the answer I can give.” She sighed. “You’re very frustrating.” “I’ve been told.” Elena smiled. Then her expression became serious. “The frequency changed when the false woman was near.” Seraphiel nodded. “That is important.” “Why?” “Because what you sensed wasn’t merely her presence.” “What was it?” “Her nature.” Elena’s eyes narrowed. “So she has a different frequency.” “Everything has a resonance.” “Even angels?” “Yes.” “Humans?” “Yes.” “God?” Seraphiel became still. “The Most High is beyond comparison.” Elena nodded. “Right.” She looked down. “So if I can sense resonance…” “You may eventually be able to distinguish what belongs to Heaven from what merely imitates it.” Elena looked at him. “That’s why she couldn’t fool me completely.” “Yes.” “Even when I didn’t understand why.” “Your spirit remembered what your mind had forgotten.” Elena felt a strange warmth. “My spirit?” “Some memories aren’t stored in the mind.” “Where are they stored?” Seraphiel looked at her chest. “Sometimes, deeper.” ⸻ Far away, the false six-winged woman stood before a dark pool. She had heard everything. She had felt the moment Elena connected to the heavenly frequency. Her hands trembled. The creature behind her stepped forward. “She’s awakening.” “Not yet.” “She heard the celestial frequency.” “That doesn’t mean she understands it.” “But she recognized you.” The woman turned. “What?” “She recognized that you were false.” Silence. The woman looked back into the pool. Elena’s reflection appeared within it. Golden light surrounded her. The woman’s face twisted. “Then we’ll change the frequency.” The creature hesitated. “Can you?” The woman smiled. “Not Heaven’s.” She touched the water. “Only hers.” ⸻ That evening, Elena was walking home when she stopped suddenly. Something felt wrong. Not dangerous. Different. She could hear the city around her. Cars. Footsteps. Voices. Music. But beneath all of it was another layer. Thousands of frequencies. She could suddenly distinguish them. A man’s heartbeat across the street. A bird moving through the trees. The electrical current running beneath the pavement. A distant baby’s cry several streets away. Elena stood completely still. The world had become louder. Not noisier. Deeper. She could feel everything. Then— one frequency caught her attention. It was beautiful. Soft. Golden. Familiar. She followed it. It led her toward a small garden. At the center stood an old tree. Elena approached. The frequency grew stronger. She placed her hand against the trunk. The tree vibrated beneath her palm. Not physically. Something deeper. A memory. A feeling. Life. Elena closed her eyes. And for one brief moment, she heard the entire world breathe. She smiled. Then a voice whispered behind her. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” Elena turned. Elias stood several feet away. She immediately stepped back. “You.” He raised his hands. “I’m not here to hurt you.” “Why are you following me?” “I’ve been watching over you.” “Why?” “Because your parents asked me to.” Elena frowned. “My parents?” “Years ago.” “Who are you?” Elias looked at her. “Someone who knows a little more than he should.” “About me?” “About what happened when you were born.” Elena’s heart quickened. “Tell me.” Elias looked toward the sky. “Not here.” “Then where?” “Somewhere the frequencies can’t be heard.” Elena frowned. “Why?” “Because there are things listening.” The beautiful frequency suddenly stopped. Elena’s blood ran cold. She looked around. The world had become silent. Completely silent. No cars. No birds. No wind. Nothing. Elias looked at her. “Now you understand.” “What?” He lowered his voice. “You’re not the only one who can hear.” Elena looked toward the darkness between the trees. Something was there. She couldn’t see it. But she could feel it. A frequency unlike anything she’d ever encountered. Cold. Empty. Hungry. And then, beneath the silence, she heard a voice. “Aurelia.” Elias grabbed her arm. “Run.” Elena didn’t move. The voice came again. Closer. “Aurelia.” Her palms began glowing. Elias stared at them. For the first time, he looked genuinely afraid. “Don’t answer it.” Elena looked at him. “Why?” “Because whatever you hear next…” The darkness behind the trees shifted. Elias tightened his grip. “…isn’t speaking to Elena.” The golden light beneath Elena’s skin brightened. “It is calling Aurelia.” And somewhere beyond the visible world, something answered.
