CHAPTER FOURTEEN : WHAT THE HEART REMEMBERS

2080 Words
The first thing Elena noticed when she woke was the silence. Not ordinary silence. Something was missing. She sat up slowly. Usually, there was always something beneath the sounds of the morning—the hum of electricity, distant traffic, birds calling from rooftops, the subtle rhythm of people moving through the neighborhood. Since her strange abilities had begun, Elena had become increasingly aware of those hidden layers. But this morning, there was nothing. Absolute silence. She couldn’t hear the refrigerator downstairs. Couldn’t hear the traffic outside. Couldn’t hear her father’s footsteps. Couldn’t even hear her own heartbeat. Elena held her breath. Nothing. She placed two fingers against her wrist. Her pulse was there. But she couldn’t hear it. “What happened?” She climbed out of bed. The moment her feet touched the floor, sound returned. A bird outside. A car passing. The refrigerator humming downstairs. Her own heartbeat. Elena froze. She stepped backward. Silence. Forward. Sound. Again. Backward. Silence. She stared at the floor. It wasn’t the room that had changed. It was her. Something inside her had shifted. She walked to the mirror. Her reflection looked normal. Brown eyes. Dark hair. Human face. But when she looked closely, she noticed something. Her reflection seemed slightly delayed. Elena raised her hand. The reflection raised its hand. She tilted her head. The reflection followed. Then— for half a second— its eyes turned gold. Elena stepped backward. The reflection remained still. She blinked. Brown. Nothing. She whispered: “Aurelia.” The reflection smiled. But Elena didn’t. Her phone rang. She jumped. Maya’s name appeared on the screen. Elena answered. “Hello?” “Finally!” Maya exclaimed. “I’ve been calling you.” “Sorry.” “You sound weird.” “I didn’t sleep well.” “Again?” Elena walked toward her window. “Something happened.” Maya immediately became serious. “What?” “I think I’m hearing things.” “You mean the weird frequencies?” Elena stopped. “How did you know?” “You told me last week.” “I did?” “Yes.” Elena frowned. She couldn’t remember telling her. Maya continued. “You said you could hear sounds other people couldn’t.” Elena sat down. “Do you remember anything else?” “You said there was one sound you liked.” “What did I say it sounded like?” Maya thought. “Music.” Elena closed her eyes. “And another one?” “You said there was a sound you hated.” “What did I call it?” Maya went quiet. “I don’t remember.” Elena stared at the floor. “Neither do I.” ⸻ At breakfast, Daniel watched Elena carefully. She barely touched her food. “You okay?” “Yes.” “You’ve been staring at your plate for five minutes.” “I’m thinking.” “About?” “The frequencies.” Daniel put down his cup. “Again?” “Yes.” “What happened?” “I think I can control them.” His expression changed. “How?” “I don’t know.” She explained what had happened in her room. Daniel listened without interrupting. When she finished, he asked: “Did you feel anything?” “At first, nothing.” “Then?” “Warmth.” “Pain?” “No.” “Fear?” “Not exactly.” Daniel nodded slowly. “What?” “I remember something.” Elena looked at him. “When you were little, you used to do something strange.” “What?” “If you became frightened, the entire room would become quiet.” Elena frowned. “Quiet?” “Completely.” “How?” “We never understood.” “Did I cause it?” “Maybe.” Miriam entered the kitchen. “What did she cause?” Daniel looked at her. “Silence.” Miriam stopped. She looked at Elena. “You’ve started doing it again.” Elena felt a chill. “What does that mean?” Miriam sat down. “It means whatever was dormant in you is becoming active.” “Is it dangerous?” “No.” Daniel answered immediately. Then he corrected himself. “It can be, if you don’t understand it.” Elena nodded. “So teach me.” Daniel and Miriam exchanged a look. “We don’t know how.” Elena sighed. “Of course.” ⸻ Later that afternoon, Elena returned to the old church. Seraphiel was waiting. “You’ve learned to control the frequency.” “I think so.” “Show me.” Elena frowned. “How?” “Listen.” She closed her eyes. At first, she heard the ordinary world. Wind. Birds. Traffic. Then she listened deeper. The celestial frequency appeared. Soft. Almost musical. She followed it. The world around her gradually faded. She could feel Seraphiel’s presence beside her. His frequency was unlike the others. It wasn’t simply sound. It felt like light. Warm. Clear. Steady. Elena opened her eyes. “You feel different.” Seraphiel smiled. “Different from what?” “Humans.” “Yes.” “Different from the false woman.” “Very.” Elena hesitated. “And different from Lyra.” “Yes.” “Can I hear Heaven because I’m an Earth Angel?” Seraphiel looked at her. “Perhaps.” Elena sighed. “You really won’t say it.” “Not until you can hear the answer yourself.” She frowned. “What does that mean?” “You keep asking what you are.” “Because everyone knows except me.” “That’s not entirely true.” “Who doesn’t know?” Seraphiel looked toward the altar. “There are beings who know your purpose but not your complete destiny.” “Even in Heaven?” “Yes.” “Why?” “Because purpose can be given.” He turned toward her. “But destiny is shaped by choice.” Elena thought about that. “So Heaven doesn’t control what I become.” “No.” “Even though I was sent here?” “No.” “Then why send me?” Seraphiel smiled. “Because you were needed.” ⸻ Elena closed her eyes again. This time, she listened beyond Seraphiel. She heard something vast. A frequency so immense that she couldn’t understand it. Her body trembled. “What is that?” Seraphiel’s expression changed. “Don’t go deeper.” “Why?” “Because you aren’t ready.” But Elena had already heard something. A voice. Not words. A feeling. And beneath that feeling was something she recognized. Love. Not human love. Something immeasurable. She opened her eyes. “Is that Him?” Seraphiel lowered his head. “Yes.” Elena’s eyes filled with tears. She didn’t know why. She hadn’t seen Him. She hadn’t heard a human voice. Yet she knew. The presence felt like the place she had been missing her entire life. Home. She whispered: “I know that frequency.” Seraphiel looked at her. “Yes.” “I knew it before.” “Yes.” “Before I was born.” “Yes.” Elena’s breath caught. Then the frequency suddenly disappeared. She opened her eyes. The church was dark. Seraphiel was staring toward the doors. “What happened?” He didn’t answer. Elena listened. There. A distorted vibration. The same one. The false woman. “She’s here.” Seraphiel nodded. “Stay behind me.” The doors opened. The six-winged woman walked inside. She looked exactly as Elena remembered her. White hair. Golden eyes. Six magnificent wings. A peaceful face. But Elena listened. And what she heard was wrong. The woman smiled. “Elena.” Elena didn’t move. “Lyra?” The woman smiled wider. “Yes.” Elena shook her head. “No.” The woman’s smile disappeared. Seraphiel stepped forward. “Leave.” The false woman ignored him. She looked at Elena. “You remember me.” Elena felt the frequency around her change. Cold. Hollow. Hungry. “You aren’t Lyra.” The woman’s expression hardened. “You don’t know that.” “I can hear you.” The woman’s eyes narrowed. “What?” “I can hear what you are.” Silence. Elena’s hands began glowing. The woman took a step backward. “You’ve been pretending.” “Only because you forced me to.” “I never forced you to do anything.” The woman’s face changed. For one instant, Elena saw something underneath. Not wings. Not a celestial being. Something twisted. Something ancient. Something that had learned how to wear beauty. Elena recoiled. The creature smiled. “Now you see.” “Yes.” “And?” Elena’s fear slowly disappeared. “You don’t belong to Heaven.” The creature laughed. “No.” The church shook. “But neither do you.” Seraphiel’s expression hardened. “Enough.” Golden light filled the room. The creature screamed. Its form flickered. For a moment, its true silhouette appeared. Tall. Thin. Wing-like shadows extending from its back. Eyes like black glass. Then the illusion returned. It looked at Elena. “You will remember.” Elena’s voice was steady. “I will.” “And when you do…” The creature smiled. “…you will remember me too.” It vanished. The church became silent. Elena stood trembling. Seraphiel approached. “You did well.” “I was terrified.” “That doesn’t mean you weren’t brave.” Elena looked at him. “She said I don’t belong in Heaven.” Seraphiel’s expression softened. “You were never sent to Earth because you didn’t belong in Heaven.” “Then why?” “Because Heaven needed someone who could walk where angels could not.” Elena stared at him. “Earth.” “Yes.” “Why me?” Seraphiel smiled. “That answer is coming.” ⸻ That night, Elena dreamed again. She was standing in the golden meadow. The little girl was there. Five-year-old Elena. She ran toward her. “You came back.” Elena knelt. “Who are you?” The child laughed. “You.” Elena froze. “What?” “I’m the part of you that remembers.” The child touched Elena’s forehead. A wave of warmth passed through her. Suddenly, Elena saw thousands of images. A vast celestial city. A great gathering of angels. The Earth below. A light descending. A hand reaching toward her. A promise. Then— a voice. “You will go where My light is needed.” Elena looked toward the immense presence. She wanted to see Him. But she couldn’t. Not yet. The child took her hand. “You were never sent to Earth because Heaven rejected you.” “Then why?” “Because you volunteered.” Elena’s heart stopped. “I did?” The child smiled. “You chose.” “Why?” The child looked toward Earth. “Because you loved them.” Elena woke suddenly. Her room was dark. Her heart was racing. She whispered: “I chose.” The words felt strangely familiar. Then she heard the celestial frequency. Soft. Beautiful. And beneath it— a second sound. A whisper from somewhere far away. “You chose wrong.” Elena froze. The frequency changed. She could hear the deception. She could feel it. But this time, something else happened. The golden light beneath her skin didn’t disappear. It grew stronger. Elena looked at her hands. Golden symbols appeared across her palms. Not one. Several. They formed patterns she couldn’t understand. Then one symbol moved. It traveled from her palm to her wrist. Another appeared over her heart. Elena stared. She felt no fear. Only recognition. Somewhere beyond the veil, Seraphiel opened his eyes. He had felt it. Lyra felt it too. And even the false creature felt the change. Elena’s awakening was no longer approaching. It had begun. Not completely. Not enough to reveal Aurelia. But enough for the world around her to start responding. And for the first time, Elena understood that her greatest ability might not be controlling light, hearing Heaven, or sensing what others could not. It might be something far more powerful. She could recognize truth. Even when truth was hidden. Even when it wore another face. Even when someone tried to make her forget. And somewhere within her, the name Aurelia stirred again.
