ChapterOne: TheJudgment
Daisy jumped as Alpha Charles and two elders badged into her home. She smiled with uncertainty, but her smile dropped when she saw the hardness in his eyes. Alpha Charles wasn’t smiling at her fondly today, he won’t even respond to her greetings this morning.
Her father stepped out of his study with a confused look on his face. He approached his friend, but he must have thought better about that and decided to stand beside her instead.
“To what do I owe this surprise visit, Alpha? You could have sent for me if you needed me. You know I will drop whatever I'm doing and come to you.” Her father said, trying not to show his worry as it had become apparent that this wasn’t a leisurely visit.
"Beta," he thundered, "you stand accused of plotting against your alpha and betraying the trust of your pack. How do you plead?"
Her father's expression of mild anger turned to one of outrage, and he all but roared his denial of the accusation.
“All my life, I have sworn my allegiance to you, and I’ve served you with unwavering loyalty. I have been honoured to know your friendship from boyhood. You think I would betray the man whose son was named after me? I could never commit such treachery.”
“It has come from a reliable source that you were spotted at the borders of Vinette with Sebastien, a rogue from Pack C, plotting against your alpha. Do you deny these charges?”.
Alpha Charles bellowed his voice, ringing clearly and loudly with authority through their house, clearly not phased by her father's betrayed look. If anything, he looked betrayed and angered by her father.
Daisy knew these accusations were false, and anyone who knew her father would know that too, especially his best friend, Alpha Charles. She did not understand why the Alpha was treating her father scornfully today, he should know her father would never betray him like that.
Her mother walked in silently from the kitchen doorway, where she had been standing since this impromptu hearing in their sitting room and stood beside her husband. Daisy was scared now. Her mother's terrified look and blanched expression was not doing anything to allay her fears.
“It wasn’t a plot against you, Alpha. I confronted Sebastien because I caught him leaving our community and heading for Vinette. I knew he was meeting someone here, and I wanted to find out who he was meeting and which member of our pack helped him get in here unnoticed. I didn’t tell you because I wanted to give you accurate information.”
“And yet you kept this information from me. Beta, you have been found guilty of treachery and betrayal of your Alpha. As you know, the penalty for this is death for you and your family. Despite your betrayal, I shall honour our years of friendship and our children's fondness for each other. I will spare your daughter and let her live, but she will be reduced to Omega and live according to her status from now on. Do not try to plead for more because that is the limit of my benevolence. You and Rielle will be executed clandestinely, rather than in full view of the entire pack. Consider it my last gift to you.”
Her mother gasped at the mention of her name, but she didn’t move or try to say another word. She reached for her husband's hand, and they stood hand in hand in the face of such harsh judgments. In a swift and merciless verdict, Alpha Charles condemned her entire family to death. The reality crashed over her, and Daisy collapsed in shock.
"No!" she whispered, blinking rapidly and shaking her head. She couldn’t find her voice at first. All she could do was whisper 'no' repeatedly; suddenly, it felt like the words were tired of being choked back and they burst out of her mouth. "You can't do this to us! My father is innocent, he would never betray you, Alpha Charles! Tell him, please. You have to convince him"
Daisy screamed, falling to her knees and grabbing Alpha Charles by his ankle. She held on to him tightly while she pleaded with her father to defend himself. Her pleas fell on deaf ears. Alpha Charles looked down at her with disgust and shook her violently off, but she wouldn't let go.
“Let go this instant, young lady. I have been very magnanimous with all of you, but do not push it. Don’t take my fondness for you for granted; if you try to intervene again, you will suffer the same fate as your parents. Never question the decision of your Alpha! You will leave this house and be taken to your new home. There you will live as an Omega, and my decision about your parents is final.”
Alpha Charles declared, turning his back on her, and suddenly four young men walked into their sitting room, all of them deltas.
"Daisy," my father whispered, his voice strained with emotion, "you must be strong. Don’t say another word. I don’t want you pleading on our behalf or defending us. No matter what happens, remember that we love you."
She ran to her mother and hugged her tightly. Tears streamed down their faces as they knew this was the last time they would see each other like this. Rielle squeezed something into Daisy’s hand discreetly and whispered to her daughter, “Do not trust anyone, always be careful of the people you call yours. I love you”. Daisy closed her palm around the tiny, cold metal and swallowed back her next sob. Then Daisy hugged her father as well, and he squeezed her tightly and refused to let her go. They were forced apart by the deltas who had come in later. Daisy was going to plead that they give them more time. She looked at the alpha again with his unyielding expression and then back at her father. His warning look made her choke back her pleas and tears.
Daisy watched as her parents were dragged away, and she was enraged by the humiliation of it all. She stood there alone and devastated. She knew that my father was innocent, and she would stop at nothing to prove it and restore her parents' honour, even if it meant defying the alpha himself.
