CHAPTER ONE
The Art of Fate
Lily Chen's brush danced across the canvas, the vibrant colors blending together in a swirl of emotion. She was lost at the moment, the world outside her studio melting away as she poured her heart and soul into the painting.
As she worked, Lily felt an inexplicable sense of longing, a yearning for something just out of reach. It was a feeling she'd grown accustomed to, one that had driven her to create art that captured the essence of the human experience.
Just as Lily was adding the final touches to the painting, her phone buzzed with an incoming text from her best friend, Rachel.
"Hey, Lil! I just got us tickets to the Ryder Charity Gala tonight. Ethan Ryder will be there, and I heard he's looking for a new artist to feature in his gallery. This could be your big break!"
Lily's heart skipped a beat as she read the message. Ethan Ryder was a billionaire philanthropist and art collector, known for his impeccable taste and generous support of emerging artists. The opportunity to showcase her work in his gallery was a dream come true.
But as Lily's excitement grew, she couldn't shake off the feeling that something was off. It was as if fate was pushing her towards this event, towards Ethan Ryder, for reasons she couldn't quite understand.
Little did she know, their meeting would set off a chain of events that would change her life forever.
As Lily arrived at the Ryder Charity Gala, she couldn't help but feel a sense of awe at the grandeur of the event. The luxurious ballroom was filled with the city's elite, all gathered to support a worthy cause.
Lily's eyes scanned the room, searching for Rachel, who had promised to meet her there. Instead, her gaze landed on a tall, imposing figure standing by the bar.
Ethan Ryder.
Even from across the room, Lily could sense the power and confidence emanating from him. His piercing blue eyes seemed to bore into her soul, making her feel like an insect under a microscope.
Lily's heart skipped a beat as Ethan's gaze locked onto hers. For a moment, they just stared at each other, the noise and chaos of the party fading into the background.
Then, Ethan smiled, and Lily's world tilted on its axis.
"Who is that?" Lily whispered to Rachel, who had appeared by her side.
"That, my friend, is Ethan Ryder," Rachel replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "And he's coming straight for us."
Lily's heart sank as Ethan made his way towards them, his eyes never leaving hers. She felt like a deer caught in the headlights, frozen and helpless.
But as Ethan approached, Lily sensed something unexpected - a spark of recognition, a sense of familiarity that she couldn't explain.
It was as if she had known him before, in another life.
As Ethan approached, Lily felt a shiver run down her spine. There was something about him that seemed to draw her in, something that made her feel like she was drowning in the depths of his eyes.
"Ethan Ryder," Rachel said, extending her hand. "This is my friend, Lily Chen."
Ethan's handshake was firm, but his touch sent a jolt of electricity through Lily's body. "It's a pleasure," he said, his voice low and smooth.
As they exchanged small talk, Lily couldn't help but feel like she was being pulled into Ethan's orbit. She tried to brush it off as mere attraction, but deep down, she knew it was something more.
"So, Lily," Ethan said, turning his attention to her. "I hear you're an artist. I'd love to see your work."
Lily's heart skipped a beat as Ethan's eyes locked onto hers. "I'd be happy to show you," she said, trying to sound calm.
As they made their way to the exhibit hall, Lily couldn't shake off the feeling that she was walking into something much bigger than herself. Something that would change her life forever.
And then, just as they reached the exhibit hall, Lily saw it. A painting that seemed to leap off the canvas and grab her by the throat.
It was a portrait of a woman who looked uncannily like her. A woman was standing in a garden, surrounded by flowers and trees that seemed to whisper secrets to her.
Lily felt a shiver run down her spine as she gazed at the painting. It was as if she was staring into the eyes of her own soul.
"Where did you get this?" Lily asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan's eyes narrowed as he gazed at the painting. "I acquired it at an auction a few months ago," he said. "But I have to say, I've never seen anyone react to it the way you are."
Lily's heart was racing as she gazed at the painting. She felt like she was uncovering a secret that was meant to remain hidden.
And then, just as she was about to turn away, she saw it. A small inscription on the bottom of the painting.
"Forever yours," it read. "E."
Lily's heart skipped a beat as she gazed at the inscription. It was as if she was staring into the eyes of her own destiny.
Lily's eyes widened as she stared at the inscription. "E" - it was the same initials as Ethan Ryder's. She felt a shiver run down her spine as she turned to face him.
"Who painted this?" Lily asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
Ethan's eyes narrowed as he gazed at the painting. "I'm not entirely sure," he said. "The painting was created by an unknown artist, but it's been in my family for generations."
Lily's heart was racing as she gazed at the painting. She felt like she was uncovering a secret that was meant to remain hidden.
"I think I've seen this painting before," Lily said, her voice filled with a sense of wonder.
Ethan's eyes locked onto hers. "Where?" he asked, his voice low and intense.
Lily's eyes drifted closed as she tried to remember. "I'm not sure," she said. "It feels like a dream, but it's so vivid."
Ethan's eyes narrowed as he gazed at her. "Tell me more," he said.
Lily's eyes snapped open as she gazed at him. "I remember standing in a garden," she said. "There were flowers and trees all around me, and I felt so happy."
Ethan's eyes locked onto hers. "What else do you remember?" he asked.
Lily's heart was racing as she tried to remember. "I remember a man," she said. "He was standing behind me, and he had his arms wrapped around me."
Ethan's eyes narrowed as he gazed at her. "What did he look like?" he asked.
Lily's eyes drifted closed as she tried to remember. "He had blue eyes," she said. "And dark hair."
Ethan's eyes locked onto hers. "Anything else?" he asked.
Lily's heart was racing as she tried to remember. "He was whispering something in my ear," she said. "But I couldn't make out what it was."
Ethan's eyes narrowed as he gazed at her. "I think you're remembering something from a past life," he said.
Lily's eyes snapped open as she gazed at him. "What do you mean?" she asked.
Ethan's eyes locked onto hers. "I think we've met before," he said. "In another life."
Lily's heart was racing as she gazed at him. She felt like she was uncovering a secret that was meant to remain hidden.
As they stood there, locked in each other's gaze, Lily felt a sense of déjà vu wash over her. It was as if she had stood in this exact spot before, with Ethan by her side.
