Beyond the woodline
It was a beautiful spring morning that I was wakened by the sounds of the birds singing in the tree right outside my bedroom window as if they were trying to say good morning. The sun was shining so bright that I could barely open my eyes so I did them one after the other as I stretched as far as I could from one end of the bed to the other. After using the restroom, I quickly washed up and brushed my teeth then began thinking about what I was going to do that day once I had finished unpacking my things and setting up my new bedroom. Suddenly it came to me, I should explore my new surroundings after just moving into our freshly new built home. Mom called me down to breakfast soon after I was dressed. Excited to explore and learn of my new life, I scarfed down my eggs lol, sausage, and toast then chased them down with a glass of milk. I couldn't wait, I was very anxious to see everything so I put unpacking to the side until later on then I ran upstairs and made my bed before leaving, I snatched up my backpack and threw it over my shoulder along the way. It's a backpack I put together for when I take long walks away from home that holds a compass so I don't get lost, a few bucks, and some snacks and such. And off I went, rushing out the door. The leveled the area I now live in and only had built 4 blocks from my house at that time. when I reached the end of the fourth block I seen that it ran into the woods, it didn't look like anyone had ever been through it from where I was standing so there wasn't a path or trail but there was a space I could fit through so I decided to check it out, I was curious about what animal might've lived there. I had a marker in my backpack along with all the other stuff I crammed in my bag so I got it out and naked every couple trees to find my way back home later when I finished exploring. About ten minutes of tripping over tree roots and swatting off mosquitoes I came up on some water running down stream. There were a couple of squirrels playing on the other side, they were so adorable. Curious I headed upstream to see where the water was coming from. There was a kind of stinky smell, I wasn't sure if I crossed paths with a skunk or not but figured I did. I pinched my nose closed real tight and held my breath until I accidentally passed out from lack of oxygen going to my brain. When I came to the smell was gone. I stood up and looked around where I had been laying to make sure I hadn't dropped anything from my sudden fall and right behind me was a set of unusual large odd shaped footprints in some almost dried up mudd. Although they were shaped like bare feet of an adult man they were extraordinarily large, at least 3 times the size of my dad's feet. Interested in who or what the footprints belonged to I followed them through the woods as quietly as I could to see where and what they led me to. The further I walked the footprints faded, the last one I could still barely seeled to an old enormous hollow yet very sturdy tree. I could smell a faded scent of the stink I smelt earlier that caused me to faint for a brief moment and being the great curious explorer I am, I just had to check the area out. As I followed the smell I carefully eyeballed my complete surroundings. I wasn't watching where I was placing my feet and suddenly I fell to the ground after tripping over what seemed to be a knotted up hairball that was tangled up in a broken branch that had fallen to the ground. I wasn't sure about it because even though it appeared to be hair it didn't seem to be long to any kind of human I had ever seen before. Some of the stringy dangling pieces were as long as I was Tall and a mixture of greys and browns in color, it was extremely dry and course. I picked up the hair and gave it a sniff because that's what I've seen people do when investigating a situation on the television shows I've watched before. The stitch made my nose curl, it was horrible! It kind of smelled like a cross between a skunk and a dead animal twice killed. I grabbed a baggy from my bag and put the hair in and sealed as fast as I could then threw it back in my bad for observation later on. I used a stick that was stuck in the ground beside me to pull myself back up and to my feet and regained my balance. Looking around, I seen sever puncture whole in several different spots in the area of the woods I found, they didn't seem to be your everyday crawdad holes. The ground looked like it had been pierced repeatedly by a type of spear or something with a very sharp point. Keeping that in mind and noticing earlier how there looked as though no traffic had ever really came through those woods, I wondered to myself what kind of animal could perform such a task? Could it be the same thing the monstrous footprints belonged to? I wasn't sure what to think. Whatever it was it was huge according to the footprints I had found that day. It was weird how they disappeared as I approached the old tree. I looked all around the old hollow tree but seen no clue of what it was I was searching for. Confused I scratched my head as I faced the tree and tried hard to think of what I the world it could be. Right then in that I stand I heard a loud grunt and it sounded like it come from the wide split that went from the roots to the third branch on the tree. It's was really wide too so I stuck my head in the opening to get a peek of what made that grunt sound I had just heard. I didn't see any type of animal or being in the spot I thought I heard the loud grunt come from but I did see some half eaten fruit in the floor of the tree that appeared to still be quiet fresh still. I walked through the opening to get a closer look. I seen a lot of things that looked like they were handmade and very old. In the corner of the tree were a few sticks that were very long that were shaved down to a very sharp point. Seeing that half eaten fruit made my hungry. It seemed to be abandoned so I sat down on a rock inside the tree and put my bag on my lap and began to dig threw it to see what I wanted to eat. I gripped a bottle of water and took a drink then picked out a snack to eat. It wasn't long before my belly was content and I was ready to head back to exploring my surroundings in the untouched woods behind my neighborhood. Stepping out of trees entrance I heard the grunt again. It sounded like it came from something big but I still couldn't tell from what or exactly where it had came from. My knees began to shake, scared of the unknown I ran as fast as I could in the direction in which I came from all the way back home.
