End of an Era
Monday morning as Allison set off for work, she could not help but feel nervous about what the future would be for her. Charles, her mentor and the man she looked up to for more than a decade was leaving the company. Rising from a mere intern in the company, she had worked her way up to become a strategic advisor and personal assistant to one of the world's top CEO's and owner of Whitmore Holdings, a multibillionaire company. While the news of Charles's retirement was yet to be announced publicly, speculations of who the next CEO would be were already going on among the employees. Though she did not like to engage in corporate gossip, she could not help but wonder who her next boss would be. Would they retain her as the PA?
"Good morning Miss Hart, " Derrick, the guard greeted her as she entered the marble-tiled building.Snapping out of her daze, Allison gave a polite nod and smiled to Derrick as she approached the elevator. As she passed other employees she could not help but overhear their hushed conversations.
"Have you heard, Mr. Whitmore sold the company to a famous tycoon" one said.
" I wonder who it is " replied another.
" I am more concerned about whether we will get to retain our jobs, I can't help but be nervous about the changes that will happen. "
Allison wanted to ignore all the chatter and remain focused, but the nervousness was getting to her as well. Ding! The elevator door opened and Allison rushed in to escape all the gossip. As the doors closed, she caught her reflection, neat and professional. Yet behind her hazel eyes, a storm brewed. As she reached the 38th floor, she dropped her bag at her desk and rushed to the conference room where the big announcement would be made. She wanted to make sure everything was set and ready. Switchitng the lights on, she started alligning the chairs in perfect spacing and started the coffee machine. She set a printed copy of the morning briefing folder on each seat and arranged Charles's documents in a crisp stack at the head of the table. She had always been meticulous, almost obsessively so. That is why Charles trusted her.
A few minutes later, the senior executives started shuffling into the conference room, talking in hushed tones. "Have you heard anything concrete?" whispered Martin from legal.
"Only that someone new is coming in," murmured Gloria from HR. "Someone external, not from the board."
"That's a big move," Martin frowned. "Charles never liked outsiders."
Allison pretended not to hear. She stood at the periphery of the boardroom, tablet in hand, like a silent sentinel. She had learned the art of presence without intrusion.
Soon after, Charles walked in stoic as ever and the whole room fell silent. Though he seemed confident, Allison noticed the tightness in his jaw and the slight hesitation in his step. Something was different.
He placed his briefcase down and scanned the room.
"Good morning," he said, his voice calm and commanding. "Let us begin."
Chairs shifted and everyone leaned in to listen.
"I will be brief," Charles continued, folding his hands over the table. "After much reflection, I have decided to retire from my position as CEO of Whitmore Holdings. Effective immediately."
Murmurs erupted in the room. Allison's stomach dropped. Even though she knew it, hearing the words land so final and absolute sent a tremor through her core. Charles raised a hand.
"I know this may come as a surprise. But the decision was not made lightly. After four decades of building this institution, it is time for new leadership. Fresh energy. A different vision." Charles said
"Who is taking over?" Linda asked.
"The company has been acquired" Charles replied. "The new owner and CEO will be arriving tomorrow. Details will be released to all departments by the end of the day. I trust you will show him the same loyalty you have given me."
Allison barely heard the rest. Her mind spun. What would the change mean for her, for her future? She could not help but sense a foreboding
After the meeting, people filtered out slowly, dazed. Some offered polite goodbyes to Charles. A few looked openly panicked. Change was coming, and no one liked the unknown.
Allison remained. She stood at the conference table, collecting the unused folders, aligning them again though there was no need. Charles lingered at the doorway, watching her.
"How long did you know about this," she said without looking up.
"A few months," he replied. "But I did not finalize the decision until last week."
She turned to him. "And you did not think to tell me?"
He sighed. "I could not, Allison. You know how these things work."
She nodded, biting her tongue. She did know. It did not make it sting any less.
"You have been more than a PA to me," Charles said quietly. "You have kept this company running in ways most people will never see. You will be fine."
"That is not what I am worried about," she replied, her voice barely above a whisper. "It is what this place will become without you."
Charles studied her, his expression unreadable. Then he gave a slight smile, the kind that did not reach the eyes, and stepped out.
And just like that, an era ended.
Allison sat down in the chair at the head of the table, the one Charles had occupied for years. She looked out at the city through the wide windows. Edenville glittered like a mirage, cold and untouchable.
What now?
A knock at the open door pulled her from her thoughts. It was Gloria, holding a file.
"You alright?" she asked.
"Ask me tomorrow," Allison said.
They shared a brief knowing smile before Gloria walked away.
Allison remained, staring at the empty chair across from her. Whoever the new CEO was, he had no idea what kind of world he was stepping into. And neither did she.
But something told her the winds of change had only just begun to blow.
