Kamala Brei Huxley’s point of view: It was exactly 6:00 am when my alarm clock rang. At first, of course, just like other students out there, I didn't get up right away despite of not being able to sleep last night. I remained like that as if I was dreaming. I have been staring blankly at the ceiling of my room since I got back home, waiting for the sunshine to greet me. Today is Monday, and yes, a day for school. I am a fine arts student at one of the prestigious colleges in our region. I can't deny that my classmates are wealthy, although there are a few scholar students who can't match the wealth of others, like my friend Chantria. We have been classmates and friends since our first year of college. We are in our third year now, and it's great that we're still getting along with each other. This is our first day of class as Third year students, that's why I prepared myself earlier than other usual school days. I have decided to go to school earlier today even though my class was at nine o'clock because I still have to find my classrooms and see my class schedule for the whole semester. “Fetch me, okay? Love you!” before I could even leave my room, I received a text from Chantria. I just shook my head and didn't answer. I went downstairs to have breakfast with mom and dad. Just going down the stairs, I immediately saw my parents hugging each other. I smiled and rushed up my steps to join that hug. “Good morning, honey!” My mom, greeting me with a smile when I wrapped my two arms around her waist. “Good morning little, princess!” It's dad. After that, he kissed me on the forehead and placed me between him and mom. “Good morning!” I replied, wearing my happiest smile. After a few seconds, we separated from each other's embrace. We happily sat down at the table and started eating. “Congratulations for making this far, Kamala.” Mommy smiled at me as we talked about my first day as a Third year Fine Arts student. “You deserve more than this. So, strive more.” my dad before lightly patting my shoulder. My mom and dad are already in their 40s, though it's not obvious because they really look younger than their ages, so you'd think they're only in their 30s. My mom is a pure blood Filipina, while my dad is a pure blood Swiss. They met when mommy was on vacation in Switzerland. Both of them were busy with work, which is why they were not blessed with a child. The reason why, according to them, I am their unexpected yet most treasured blessing. Yes, I am an adopted child of my parents. After we ate, I said goodbye to them and headed to my car. I still smile when I remember the day when mom and dad gave me this car. It was my 18th birthday, and it was the happiest birthday I ever had. It's a pastel black McLaren GT, funny because I almost didn't accept it out of shame. "What took you so long? I've been here for a decade!" Yes, this is my ever over-reacting friend, Chantria. That is how she greeted me when I picked her up. Their house is close to ours because it is just outside our subdivision, but it took me a while because I had a hard time finding my school I.D. Chantria is indeed beautiful, her long hair is always bunned. Which is why the long eyelashes of her round brown eyes are more visible. Her lips are perfectly shaped and although her nose is not that perfect, it suits the small shape of her face. “Can't you just say, thank you?!” I answered her sarcastically, causing her to laugh out loud. "Mama has something for us. We don't need to buy from the school's golden canteen anymore," she said while we were on our way. “Manang Ester gave something for us as well,” I replied. She smiled widely after that. This is how Chantria and I chose to spend our allowances here in our school. We bring food from each other's homes to save money because, as she said earlier, the prices of food in our canteen are like gold, they are so expensive. Although I have a personal card and cash, I just choose not to use them. “University of Machiavellian here I come!” Chantria shouted when we saw the big gate of our school. I just shook my head while covering my right ear because of the loudness of her voice. I can now feel the excitement as I see the students wearing their uniforms walking and getting out of their cars. In the middle of my observation, I had to stop my car immediately because of the sudden overtake of a white car. My heart almost broke from my chest due to shock and nervousness. If I hadn't stopped the car immediately, I would probably have hit the back of his car. “What the-” Chantria almost cursed as she held her head. "Is he even thinking?" he asked angrily. I didn't answer her but carefully drove towards our parking lot. It's a good thing nothing happened to this car because otherwise I can't forgive myself. After arriving at the parking lot, I saw the same car parked in the space that I have often parked in since then. I got a little irritated because this guy is acting like he was doing nothing. “This is kinda annoying,” I whispered softly to myself. “Relax, it's our first day. Just chill.” Chantria. Really? coming from her. I took a deep breath before looking for another space for my car. It took us about five minutes to search because of the number of vehicles here. And when we found space for our car, we fixed ourselves before going down. The uniform of our department is white Long sleeve topped with a navy blue coat. Paired it with a short skirt which I don't like. According to my parents, this uniform fits me well. I even looked at myself from the rearview mirror of my car. I smiled when I saw my long and well-groomed hair, my long black eyelashes, sharp nose and naturally red lips. "You know, you're so beautiful that even I'm in awe of you." After a while, Chantria spoke while I was preparing myself. "You know, if we weren't friends I would think you were romanticizing me." I answered to what she said, and she acted like she was going to throw up. "You know, you're disgusting." she said, then got out of the car first. I just laughed and followed her. We walked together towards the school gym. On our way there, we passed the College of Engineering next to the College of Architecture, where other girls deliberately passed because almost all the school's basketball varsity was there. We also passed the College of Management and accountancy building where opposite it is the wide Oval where many students choose to rest. Of course, the Department of Medicine can't be excluded where you can see students carrying books and replicas of different parts of the human body. Scary. After a few minutes, we reached the School Gym. As in previous years, there were many students inside. Those in uniform and those who are not, maybe First-year students, are those who are not in uniform. Here we will wait for the one assigned to speak for today for some reminders and guidelines. "Good Morning students" loudly shouted Sir Joshua, our Emcee for this morning. He is also one of our teachers in the department. "Good morning, sir!" "Good morning, baby!" "Good morning, sir Juswa! Tthat was the response of my fellow students to him. Chantria and I just laughed from behind because of what we heard. Sir Josh is really handsome, in fact I have a crush on him too. Not only because he is handsome, but also because of his teaching skills. "Today is the first day of another school year. The same day when another door of opportunities and possibilities will open," he said, smiling, and we all fell silent. "This new journey of yours will be filled with sacrifices and struggles," he spoke again. "That is why you need plenty of strength, endurance and faith to overcome them," he was smiling. "This may be the beginning for some of you, especially for our freshies and last year for others, but always remember that there is a beauty in every beginning and ending," he continued, and we applauded. Sir Josh continued to speak while we were in the gym. I was smiling while listening to him. I looked around to see the expressions of the others. You can see the excitement and amazement in them, some still look sleepy and some seem impatient. I laughed secretly because of them when I saw an image of a person on the rooftop of our building which is behind this Gym. This gym has a window that looks directly at the rooftop of the College of Arts and Sciences and College of Fine Arts building where we belong. The distance where it stands now is so far from where I am that I cannot see its face. I tried to recognize him for a while, but I couldn't, so I just turned my attention back to the front. "Dreams are the fuel of success. So, dream high and be the best version of yourselves, Students. Again, good morning and enjoy the rest of the School Year!" Sir Josh finished before getting off the stage. Most of us cheered before starting to leave the gym. Chantria and I let everyone get out before we went out. It's better to wait than to push yourself with them because some of them might just be rude to you. "Okay! Let's start our room hunting!” Chantria happily announced before grabbing me and running out of the gym. We even laughed while running. Many students can be seen as we go to our building. And when we got to the entrance our building, we first took the paper from each of our bags where our schedule and room number for this semester were written. It's another year that we have to overcome as students. As said earlier, I know this year will not be easy for everyone. We have to fight ourselves for the dream that gave us strength to get to where we are today.
