Evolet was no longer in her right mind. These vermin were threatening her pack, her clan, and now they had to die. She no longer cared that anyone knew she could walk in the sun. Let them know. Now they would know there was nowhere they could hide from her. Evolet roared again, making everyone flinch. The rogues stepped back in trepidation. They’d never heard of a vampire who could walk in the sun. Evolet moved faster than the eye could see. When she stopped, the six rogues who’d cornered Lucy fell to the ground, their heads separated from their bodies. Evolet tossed the heads to the ground, her eyes glowing. In a blink, she was gone again. When she reappeared, the hunters fell, their blood gushing from their chests where their hearts used to be. “Come on you f*****g leech! I’m not afraid of you!” the rogue alpha snarled. Evolet very slowly turned her head in his direction. Her glowing silver eyes made him flinch before he could catch himself. Daren attacked Evolet but even with his incredible speed, she was faster. She dodged every one of his attacks. Then she went on the attack. Evolet slammed her open hand into Daren’s chest. The impact made him fly across the front lawn, smashing through the trunk of a tree. He got back up, coughing up blood. He didn’t even have time to blink before Evolet was in front of him. She swung her arm with a snarl, her claws slicing through his throat like butter. The rogues gasped and cried out in fear before running for their lives, Missy hiding among them.
Lucy’s cries brought Evolet out of her haze of rage, and she rushed over to Brone. She turned him over and tears fell down her cheeks. He was so pale, and his heart was beating sluggishly. “Don’t leave me please Brone. Please. I love you,” She begged. Brone reached up his hand and cupped her face. “Evolet, you can heal him!” Lucy cried as she joined Evolet beside her brother. Evolet looked into Lucy’s eyes. She was right, Evolet could give Brone her blood like she’d done to Lucy. Nodding, she pulled the arrows out of Brone’s chest and stomach. When she went to make a cut in her neck Matthias stepped forward. “Don’t you f*****g dare pollute him with your blood!” he growled. It wasn’t that he cared, he wanted Brone to die. Evolet snarled at him viciously and an aura of death hit him in waves. When Matthias would have stepped closer, Vale stepped in front of him with cold eyes. “Is there a reason you don’t want Evolet to heal her mate Matthias?” he demanded. Not wanting to be outed Matthias growled and stepped back. Evolet lifted Brone so that his face was close to her neck. Then she made the cut. “Drink mate. My blood will heal you.” Evolet said, hoping he could forgive her for the change he would be going through. Brone groaned when Evolet’s blood hit his tongue. She tasted so good. When the pleasure he felt turned into pain he heard her ask for his forgiveness before he blacked out.
Evolet paced back and forth anxiously, wringing her hands in front of her. It’d been days and Brone had yet to wake up. His conversion had been brutal. Unlike Lucy, Trey understood what she was trying to do and didn’t fight the effect her blood was having. But with so much silver in Brone’s system, it was touch and go. “Ev, please sit down and relax. Brone survived, he’s alive. His body just needs time to rest.” Lucy urged, gently touching Evolet’s arm. Nodding, Evolet sat down in the chair beside the bed and waited. All but a few of the council departed. They needed to apprise their people of what was going on. Lucy left Evolet alone in the room and joined Case, Jake, Nikolai, Kali, Oberon and Soarn in the living room. “Any change yet?” Case inquired. Lucy shook her head. No one asked how Evolet was doing, they all knew. Soarn sat on a chair in the corner and studied everyone in the room. He still couldn’t wrap his head around the fact that Evolet and most of her clan could walk in the sun. Yet he’d been proof himself. When Evolet gave him a couple of drops of her blood to rid his body of the poison coursing through him, for a couple of hours, the sun hadn’t hurt him either. The effect of her blood had worn off now, though. Snippets of legends played on a loop in Soarn’s memory. There were ancient legends in long dead languages that spoke of the first vampires to walk the earth, back when humans were a young species, just out of caves. These vampires were protectors and teachers. Then they’d been ruthlessly hunted and massacred. With their demise, the vampire species declined into darkness and violence. Soarn wondered if Evolet was one of those ancient vampires. He needed to find out, but he owed Evolet a life debt and wouldn’t leave until he made sure her mate was okay; his honor would not allow anything less.
Loud sounds and strong scents were the first things Brone registered as consciousness returned to him. He opened his eyes and had to close them tightly again. It was the middle of the night, yet everything seemed so bright. “Trey?” Brone called out for his Lycan. “I’m here, Brone, and we are okay. Our mate saved both of us.” Trey replied steadily. “Is this what Evoley sees all the time?” Brone asked his beast in curious amazement. “Hmm, she must,” he responded. Brone opened his eyes again. He could see individual dust motes floating around in the air. He could hear the heartbeats of everyone stretching out for miles. He could hear the blood practically humming through the veins of everyone in the house. How does Evolet live like this? Brone wondered to himself. Gingerly, he lifted his head, expecting pain; he felt nothing. He glanced down to see his mate’s head laying on the bed beside him, asleep. Brone lovingly swept some hair out of Evolet’s face. Her eyes snapped open, and she shot up in a sitting position. With his new eyesight, Brone could see the many different shades of red in her hair. The tiny veins spider webbing under her skin. Her eyes, which he’d first thought were just light silver, were now a more mercurial silver. Tears glistened in her beautifully, captivating eyes, and he felt guilt through their bond. “I’m so sorry, but I couldn’t let you die,” She whispered. Brone pulled Evolet into his lap and wrapped his arms around her. Now that he was more like her, she didn’t have to be so careful with him, and he realized just how much of herself she held back for fear of hurting everyone. “You have nothing to feel sorry for. You saved my life Evolet, and I love you.” He assured her.
Evolet pulled out of Brone’s embrace and sealed her lips over his. He groaned as he tasted her with his new enhanced senses. He felt the heat at the juncture of her thighs, and his body instantly hardened. Evolet rubbed herself against his hardness and moaned into his mouth. With hurried movements, they stripped the clothes from each other, and then Evolet impaled herself on Brone’s length. Now was not the time for prolonged lovemaking. What they felt was an overwhelming need to reaffirm life. Evolet’s air rushed from her in a gasp. She lifted her body and sank back down, Brone’s growl in her ear, only making her more aroused. In a blink, Brone flipped them over and began to slam into Evolet’s welcoming heat with abandon. The room was filled with Evolet’s wanton moans and Brone’s grunt and growls of pleasure. They climaxed together, crying out each other’s names. Brone gently slipped out of the haven of Evolet’s body and lowered them to the bed, wrapping his body around hers. They spent the rest of the night like that. Everyone in the living room heard what was happening in the bedroom and chuckled. All retired to their rooms except for Soarn. Nikolai walked him to the door. “Please give Evolet and Brone my regards. If she has a need of me, well?” Soarn said, leaving the question open-ended. Nikolai nodded his head in respect, and then Soarn was gone.
The next few weeks were filled with Evolet teaching Brone everything he needed to know about Bloodborns. She told him the history of her people. How they lived, how they were massacred, and then how tired of being the only one left, she slumbered. Evolet showed Brone how to control his new strength and how to feed. Oberon stayed with them for a while. He’d also wanted to learn about her people. He told her that he remembered scrolls in Faerie mentioning the Bloodborn, and they became fast friends. He left after a week. A war was coming, and Oberon wanted to be ready for it. Brone walked into the room he shared with Evolet and frowned when he saw her bent over, hugging the toilet. He’d never heard of vampires getting sick, and he frowned. “Ev are you alright?” he asked, rubbing soothing circles up and down her back. Evolet flushed the toilet, rinsed, and then wiped her mouth. She’d been feeling ill the last week and yesterday decided to go talk to Des. Evolet already knew why she was sick; she could sense the new energy within her, but she’d wanted Des to confirm. Brone wasn’t sure he liked the uncertainty he could feel through the bond. “Brone, I’m pregnant.” She stated. Brone stood motionless for a moment, absorbing what Evolet just told him. He was as still as statue until it sunk in. He was going to be a father. Brone’s face lit up like there was a light inside of him, and his face broke out into a smile. Trey howled happily within him at the news. “We’re going to have a pup?” he asked excitedly. “We’re going to have pups, Brone, more than one.” Evolet corrected him. Brone whooped loudly, picked her up, and spun her around. Evolet laughed joyously as she felt his love and happiness through their bond.
Even though there was happiness, Brone and Evolet argued a lot. “I don’t want you to fight Ev. I won’t chance anything happening to you and the pups.” Brone said darkly. Just the thought of anything happening to his mate and pups had both Brone and Trey chomping at the bit. He realized that he was a little overprotective and hovered too much, but he couldn’t help himself. Everything inside of him screamed to protect his mate and young. Evolet sighed and ran her fingers through her long hair, agitated. “Nothing is going to happen to the babies, Brone. I won’t be kept out of this fight. I almost lost you once, I won’t let it happen again.” She told him. Brone growled under his breath. “That won’t happen again, Evolet. I’m Bloodborn now to remember?” he replied. Anger crashed through the bond between them. “Just because you’re Bloodborn as well as Lycan doesn’t mean you’re invincible, Brone. I watched as my people were hunted to extinction, all of them! For thousands of years, I believed I was the only one left! We are not gods Brone. Do not let the strength I gave you go to your head!” she yelled. Brone deflated after that. She was right. He couldn’t get cocky. He may be stronger and faster, but he could still be killed. Brone felt the pain Evolet did over the m******e of her people and pulled her into his arms. “I’m sorry. You’re right. I’m sorry, but please be careful Evolet.” He pleaded.
Much to Brone’s worry, Evolet decided to share her blood with more in her clan. First, it was just the vampires who were living on pack land, then more came from the city. They never drank from Evolet directly. The mate bond wouldn’t allow it. Instead, Rick and Des extracted blood from Evolet, a little bit every day, and the vampires drank it from vials. When Brone called and told Nick about what was happening, Nick and Misha joined them, bringing most of their pack with them. Evolet even shared her blood with Misha to strengthen her, and so Evolet could share her memories with her niece. Brone never thought he would see the day that vampires and shifters didn’t war with each other. He glanced over at Evolet. She had such a look of love in her eyes. She was relaxed and carefree for the first time since he’d met her. His mate had lived in a time of incredible peace, protecting those weaker than herself. She watched the fall and slaughter of her people, believing she would forever be the last. So much loved swelled within him for her. He was so proud. Evolet didn’t let everything she’d been through darken her spirit. She rebuilt her people and had family. Just then, she turned her head and looked at Brone. His love was mirrored in her eyes. But both Evolet and Brone knew that this peace was momentary, and if they wanted it to continue, they needed to get rid of what threatened it.
