Love Thy Enemy

Chapter 3

It hurt to see the pain that had crossed his mate’s beautiful face when he’d pushed her away. Brone could also feel her pain through the mate bond between them. She was weak, confused, and in pain. Not just from him but from some of the news she’d received upon waking. Brone cursed as he walked back to his room. He’d assuaged his lust not an hour prior to meeting his mate but was already tenting his shorts and all because she’d touched him. Brone refused to use his mate’s name it was too personal. He hoped that she recovered quickly so that he wouldn’t have to deal with her anymore. “I rather like our mate’s hands on us.” Trey taunted Brone. Lucy walked up to Evolet and wrapped her arms around her. “I am so sorry for my brother’s reaction.” she comforted; Evolet was as still as a statue in her arms. “Come on let’s get you a room so you can rest.” Evolet smiled sadly at her. “I think I have slept enough for a couple of lifetimes, but thank you, Lucy.” She replied, and Jake, Rick, and Case chuckled. Lucy brought Evolet to the pack house and escorted her to a big room with a huge king-sized bed. The walls were red and white. The sheets and blanket were black, and there was a big window looking out into the forest. Lucy left after showing Evolet how to use everything in the washroom. Once she was alone, Evolet stripped out of her clothes and turned on the shower as hot as it would go. She stood under the spray with her eyes closed, mentally going over everything that had happened, and then she let the tears flow. After washing and having a good cry, Evolet lay on the bed and stared at the ceiling.

A couple of days had passed since Evolet had woken and to say that things were tense was an understatement. Evolet spent most nights with Lucy and Jake or with Rick. She avoided the daytime, even though the sun wouldn’t harm her. The pack assumed that, like other vampires, Evolet couldn’t walk in the sun, and she decided to keep it that way. The first time she spent the evening with Rick, she demonstrated how a couple of drops of her blood could heal even a grievous wound. To say Rick was awed was putting it mildly. She promised to leave him a vial of her blood before leaving. Evolet found that she liked Lucy and Jake a lot. They usually kept her busy enough that she didn’t dwell on the fact that her people were gone or that her mate didn’t want her. She trained daily in the gym with Lucy to brush up on her skills, although Evolet always had to consciously keep from crushing everyone she touched. One evening, Evolet was feeling weaker than usual, and it was because she still hadn’t fed. “Are you okay?” Lucy inquired while Evolet was walking and talking with her and Jake. They stopped outside of the pack house. “I haven’t had any blood since I went to sleep, other than the drop that woke me.” Evolet said with a shy smile, causing both Lucy and Jake to blush.

Jake scratched his head and cleared his throat nervously. “Um if it’s blood you need, you can feed off of me?” he offered, and Evolet blushed. Brone walked out the door at the end of their conversation and heard his cousin offer to let his mate feed off him. Trey growled, and all three of them turned around to stare at him. There was no way he was letting another male feed his mate, even if he didn’t want her. “No f*****g way! If she is going to feed from anyone it’s going to be me!” Brone growled and both Jake and Lucy backed up. Brone took hold of Evolet’s arm, hissing when the sparks danced between them. He led her to a bench in front of the house and sat her down. He sat down beside her and offered her his wrist. Evolet looked between Brone’s wrist and his face unsure if she should accept his offer. “Just do it before I change my mind!” Brone snapped, making Evolet jump. She gingerly took his wrist in her hands and lowered her head. She licked his wrist once, twice and then sank her fangs into his wrist. Evolet moaned as she drank. His blood was like ambrosia, and she didn’t think anyone would ever taste as good as her mate did. Brone was breathing heavily, his eyes black when she finished feeding and closed the wound with her tongue. Suddenly, his mouth was on hers and he was gathering her close to his body, growling possessively. Evolet moaned softly and then lost herself in his kiss.

Without warning, Brone shoved Evolet away from him and stood up. “Stay the f**k away from me!” he snarled before leaving her sitting on the bench shaking. Evolet was an ancient creature but next to her mate she felt young and vulnerable, breakable. “Brone!” Lucy yelled as she wrapped her arms around her new friend. Even Jake was angry at his cousin and Alpha for the way he was treating his mate. Evolet took herself from Lucy’s arms when Case joined them and sighed. “I think I am just going to go to my room.” she told them. It’d been about a week since she’d woken and since then Lucy, Jake, Rick and Case had caught her up on everything she missed. Evolet learned that the vampires were attacking the wolves over a misunderstanding. She already knew that the humans now had a ruling government and far outnumbered them. In return, Evolet told them a little about her time.

She was just walking through her bedroom door when a sharp piercing pain pierced her chest. It happened so fast, at first it started out as a burning sensation. Evolet tried to just rub it away. The burning then escalated to stabbing until it felt like someone was trying to rip her heart out. Evolet gasped for breath and clawed at her chest, her nails slicing through her own flesh to get to her heart. All the while she was crying and screaming in pain. Lucy, Case and Jake were by her side in an instant. “Ev, what’s the matter? What’s happening?” Lucy asked trying to keep Evolet from ripping into herself. Jake called the doctor via mind link. Rick rushed over and shook his head once he saw what was happening. “What, what is going on?” Jake demanded. “Did Evolet feed from Brone?” Rick asked and Lucy nodded. “It’s the mate bond. He is being intimate with another female.” Rick said sadly and Case growled low and deep. “He is being unfaithful to their mate bond. It’s torturing her!” he growled. It was getting harder for Lucy to keep Evolet from hurting herself now as Evolet’s cries turned into growls. Jake and Lucy gasped as Evolet’s eyes turned from silver to bright red. As suddenly as the episode started, Evolet’s cries quieted, and Evolet went limp.

Brone couldn’t handle having Evolet there. She tempted him every time he saw her. Everywhere he went, so was her scent. When she’d fed from him, he’d gotten so hard. He fought the overwhelming urge to throw her on the ground and take her right there. Instead, he’d rushed into the house and pulled Missy into his office. He wasted little time in priming her before shoving himself into her. Missy cried out with pleasure at every hard thrust. In the back of his mind Trey was growling and snarling, wanting to get free. Trey wanted to get to his mate. He didn’t want this weak wolf that Brone had chosen. He wanted his powerful vampire mate. Brone was so wrapped up in Missy’s body that at first, he didn’t hear the commotion downstairs. As he was finishing up with Missy, he could hear screaming coming from the main floor. Worried that rogues were attacking, Brone rushed downstairs. What he saw was worse. Jake, Rick, Lucy and Case were huddled over a figure on the floor.

He could smell blood, a lot of it and he stepped closer. Trey howled in rage and sorrow when he saw Evolet was the one on the floor. Her hands were out at her sides, her claws covered in blood. As he got closer, he gagged. Her chest was gaping open, her sternum and ribs exposed. He could see her heart beating underneath her ribcage. “Evolet!” Brone yelled trying to get closer, but Case wouldn’t let him and before he knew what was coming, Case punched Brone in the face so hard, he flew backwards cracking the wall. Brone growled and got up, dusting himself off. “If you were a part of my pack, you would be dead right now!” He snarled at Case. Case snarled back at him. “My mate being in your pack and being your sister is the only reason why you are still breathing!” Case roared at him. By this time a crowd had gathered around them. Jake picked Evolet off the floor. Her chest was healed but she looked dead and carried her to the pack hospital, Rick following behind him. “How could you Brone? How could you make her seal her bond to you and then go and have s*x with someone else?” Lucy demanded. The disgust and disappointment in her eyes filled Brone with shame. He didn’t have an answer for her. Even Trey was snarling at him in the back of his mind. “I hate you, human. You don’t deserve to be a Lycan.” he snarled at Brone before going silent. Case put his arm around Lucy’s shoulder before leaving the house and heading towards the hospital with her. Missy rushed out then. “My goddess Brone are you alright?” she asked, trying to check him for injuries. He just brushed her off and walked back into his office. Brone tried a few times to talk to Trey, but Trey had shut him out.
