Evolet woke to the sound of beeping. When she looked around, she saw Lucy sitting in a chair, holding her hand. “Lucy?” Evolet sighed, trying to sit up. Lucy jumped awake and was at her side immediately. “How are you feeling?” Lucy asked. Evolet shrugged, tears filling her eyes. “Like I tried to rip my own heart out.” She replied with a soft sob. She knew what happened and she knew that she could no longer be there. Evolet would either kill the b***h her mate was with, or she would die clawing her own heart out. “Lucy, I can’t stay here anymore. As much as I have come to care for you, Rick, Jake and Case. I can n-not be here. I will die if I stay here.” She sobbed, as her tears fell down her face. Lucy started crying too. She nodded her head. She knew that Evolet was right and as much as it pained her to say the next words, this was what was best for Evolet. “Y-you need to reject him Ev.” Lucy said as she wiped her eyes. The two women cried together for a short time before Lucy’s eyes grew vacant. To anyone else it would look as if Lucy was staring into space, but Evolet knew that Lucy was talking via mind link. She knew that something was wrong right away. When Lucy came back to herself, there was worry in her face. “I have to go, Evolet, Rogues and vampires are attacking” she said rushing out of the doors. Feeling stronger, Evolet followed Lucy outside.
There were more rogues than vampires which told her that the vampires must have followed the rogues hoping for an easy meal. Three rogues attacked Lucy at once. One jumped on her back, one went for her throat and the third tried to take out her legs. Try as she might, Lucy couldn’t get the rogue off her back. Evolet moved fast as lightning over to Lucy. She grabbed hold of the rogue on her friend’s back, digging her claws deep and threw him off her. The rogue crashed through a tree, breaking its back instantly. While Lucy was fighting the one in front of her, Evolet, grabbed the one going for her legs and pulled the rogue close to her. She sank her long fangs deep, ripping into his neck. As she was draining him dry, she crushed him with her arms until there was no life left in him. The few vampires that had shown up stopped fighting the wolves when they saw her fighting alongside them. Even if they didn’t realize the species of vampire she was, they recognized that Evolet was much older, and they wouldn’t fight her.
Brone rushed over to his sister when the fighting was over. “Lucy are you hurt?” he asked, looking her over for injuries. Lucy pushed him away. She’d been doing that a lot lately. For days she’d been avoiding him. She wouldn’t even let him into the hospital room that Evolet was in. “I am fine thanks to Evolet.” Lucy replied briskly, dusting herself off. Case finished piling the bodies up and wrapped Lucy in his arms. Brone wanted that. He wanted that connection. He just wasn’t happy that his mate was a leech. He walked up to Evolet, who wouldn’t meet his eyes. She was looking over at the small group of vampires that Brone hadn’t noticed before. He growled at them only to have his mate snarl at him, her eyes changing from alluring silver to red. Missy ran up to them growling at Evolet. “Don’t snarl at my mate you nasty f*****g leech!” Missy snarled and Lucy growled at her. Evolet narrowed her eyes at Missy, who had her arms wrapped around Brone possessively and snapped her long fangs at her. Missy flinched and backed up a step. The small group of vampires nervously walked towards Evolet. To everyone’s surprise, they all bowed in front of her, going down to one knee. Evolet nodded her head and they all rose. She then looked back at Lucy, Case and Jake. The three of them hugged and then Evolet started walking away with the young vampires.
Lucy had tears in her eyes as she watched her friend walk away. “Evolet, where the hell are you going?” Brone demanded hotly. Evolet stopped and turned around to look at Brone. “I Evolet, last of my kind, reject you Brone as my fated mate!” Brone sucked in a breath as pain seared through his chest. Trey howled in his mind, as he too felt the pain Brone was feeling from the rejection. He fell to his knees, clutching his chest as he watched the mate he’d scorned and cheated on disappear into the night. Lucy frowned at the strange expression on Case’s face. “Case, what’s the matter?” she asked. Case turned to his mate as the ramifications of what he’d discovered made him shiver. Before he could reveal his discovery to Lucy, Missy opened her mouth. “Finally, the f*****g leech left with her own kind!” she sneered. Case huffed out a humourless laugh and shook his head at Missy and Brone. “They are not her own kind. They are vampires yes, but she is a species all her own. If I am correct, she is a species of vampire called Bloodborn. The Bloodborn were the first vampires, royals. They weren’t created by the Goddess they were born from her. They are faster than other vampires, stronger, are more powerful.” He stated. “You had the strongest vampire in existence as your mate and you scorned, shamed and cheated on her. You chose this weak b***h wolf over her. She will go and live with her kind as you so eloquently put it. Some will worship her, and others will try to use her. Some might even be stupid enough to try to kill her.” he said and started to walk into the pack house. He stopped and turned to Missy. “I hope you never come face to face with her again because I can guarantee, you won’t come out of the meeting alive.” He warned, before leaving everyone outside. Brone only heard some of what Case had told them. Out of all that, Brone heard that Evolet was special, one of a kind. “Trey what have I done?” he asked his beast but there was no answer, Trey had abandoned him just like he’d said he would.
Evolet walked silently while the other vampires glanced at her occasionally. It nearly ripped her heart out to reject her mate. In her time, rejecting one's mate just wasn't done. If you mated outside of your species, fate had a reason for it. Fated mates were extremely rare and cherished. It was abundantly clear to Evolet that Brone didn't want her because she wasn't a Lycan or wolf. His problem was that she was a vampire. Evolet frowned feeling felt wetness trailing down her cheeks and she lifted a hand to wipe the wetness away. She was crying. She hadn't cried since she was young, when her parents died. She offered her companions a half smile that didn't reach her eyes. She felt empty now, hollow, only half a person. "Where are we going?" Evolet asked and her companions smiled. "We have a house in the city. We’re outsiders and don't have a clan. Sorry." their leader informed her. Evolet reached out, squeezing his shoulder soothingly. "Don't be sorry. I am the only one left of my people, so I don't have a clan either." She said to reassure him. One of the females walked closer to her. "We can be your clan. You could lead us, make us great!" she suggested excitedly. Evolet thought about it and nodded. " It would be an honour to be part of your clan." she replied. Evolet’s new clan members beamed at her and warmth suffused her. The house they arrived at was on a huge lot. It was apparent that it used to be an estate sized home with a wrap around porch. There was a grove of weeping willows in the front yard. The house itself was in disrepair. Evolet tapped her chin with her finger as she looked over the house. When she had gone down to slumber, she'd had her entire fortune hidden with her. Evolet told her clan members where she'd been. She warned them of the humans that owned the facility above where she slumbered, and they took off to find her possessions.
In a matter of hours, her small clan returned with not only some of her things but news that the facility she’d been held in was abandoned. It took them a couple of weeks but eventually Evolet and her clan managed to retrieve all her belongings. Some of her jewelry she sold to museums or private collectors. After all they were thousands of years old. Selling her things made Evolet immeasurably wealthy and she used her money to better her clan. She tore down and rebuilt their home, making sure they had security all over their property. She outfitted their home with a secret entrance, so they had a way of escape if they needed it and she had worked out a deal with the national blood bank. There was no need to feed from living people when blood was so easy to procure now. A few times, a master vampire attempted to overthrow Evolet to take over her clan, but she defeated them easily. After the fourth challenge, word spread far and wide about Evolet. Of how strong and powerful she was. It wasn't long before she was running the whole city. Of course, her second Nikolai was the one who took care of her business and most people dealt with him while Evolet stayed in the shadows. Evolet lay in her bed and smiled as she thought about the first week after rejecting Brone. She’d shared her blood with her new clan to cement their clan bonds enabling them to communicate telepathically. She had no idea at the time that her blood would change them. They weren't exactly Bloodborn like her, but Evolet's blood had made them faster, stronger and able to walk in the sun. She sighed as thoughts of Brone snuck into her mind. She thought about him all the time. Brone hadn’t accepted her rejection so Evolet felt it whenever he slept with Missy, but their bond was weak enough that she could ignore the pain that made her want to claw her own heart out.
