CHAPTER 1: THE DEVASTATION
Jack, Emma, and Max were having the best time of their lives, playing in the lush and magical forest of Blossomwood. The sun was shining down through the tall trees, casting dappled light on the forest floor. Birds sang melodiously in the branches above as a gentle breeze rustled the leaves.
As the trio explored deeper into the forest, they stumbled upon a clearing. Their excitement instantly turned to panic. They approached the clearing further only to realize that several trees had been cut down and the earth was scorched. The kids were utterly dismayed.
"What the...?" Jack exclaimed, staring in disbelief at the destruction before them.
"This is terrible!" Emma exclaimed. "Who would do something like this to such a beautiful place?"
"This is a puzzle we definitely need answers to," Max said. "We need to tell someone about this."
Jack nodded in agreement. "Yeah, we need to find out who's responsible for this and make sure they're held accountable."
“That’s right,” said Emma as she looked around at the devastation. "But in the meantime, we should also try to clean up as much as we can. I mean, we can’t just leave the mess this way."
"Agreed," Max said. "Let’s gather some branches and twigs and pile them up to help the forest regrow. Then we can plant new trees maybe some other day."
"Yes," Emma agreed. "With a lot of work, the scene will look less awful in a few days. We can make the difference!"
"Alright, let's get to work!" Jack said, determined to do whatever it took to restore the beauty of Blossomwood forest.
For the next few hours, the three friends worked tirelessly to clean up the clearing and began the process of restoring the forest the little bit they could. The entire process of gathering branches and twigs, and piling them on heaps was a tedious one, but they kept working happily.
Their chatter and laughter as they worked on made the work easier for them. Despite the sadness they felt at the destruction to Blossomwood forest - of which they were the Treekeepers, they were filled with a sense of hope and purpose as they carried and dragged every single fallen branch to designated spots. Anyone could tell they enjoyed one another’s company even in difficult times as this.
"I'm glad we stumbled upon this on time," Emma said as they sat down to rest after what seemed like hours of hectic labour.
"Right," Jack agreed. "It could have been worse in a few days. Who knows?"
"I’m still upset and in disbelief," Max said with a grave tone, his look grim. “Everyone knows this is an abomination in Blossomwood. Everyone knows this forest means the very life to us, and they still come in to create this level of harm!”
His co-Treekeepers could see his face literally go from pale to red, yet they were as helpless. They sighed.
“I’m worried what our Guardians will think of this,” said Emma after some brief silence. “And indeed what the village will think of us when the news breaks out.”
“Well, it’s none of our fault,” said Jack, his voice reassuring. “We can’t control who comes in and goes out of the forest. The best we can do now is to report back to our Guardians and hope the king and the elders will be able to fish out the perpetrators of this abominable act and bring them to book.”
Max gave a heavy sigh, then hissed in frustration as he got up from the ground where they were seated. “I think we need to survey the menace thoroughly so we know exactly what to report home,” he said as he grabbed and put on his cap.
“Let’s do that,” said Jack, standing also. He put out a hand to Emma who grabbed it and helped herself up.
“What exact details are we on the lookout for?” inquired Emma as she brushed off sand and dead leaves from her dress.
“Apart from making a rough estimate of the number of trees destroyed, I think we might be lucky to find some cues that could give the perpetrators out,” said Max thoughtfully. “Like the tools they used…”
“Yeah! Or some personal items they might have forgotten behind,” Jack added.
“Exactly!” Max concurred.
“That’s brilliant!” said Emma, thrilled, despite her dismay.
And with that, the children embarked on their investigation with renewed hope and purpose.
Unknown to the Treekeepers, more shock awaited them as they explored deeper into the forest. Not only had they lost count of the number of trees destroyed by the saboteurs, but whoever they were apparently left no traces to give them a cue who they were nor whence they came.
Just when they were about to call it a day, Emma spotted something strange on one of the remaining trees. “Oh, look at that!” she exclaimed, pointing at the tree.
Her companions turned in the direction she pointed.
“What’s that?” asked Max, confused.
“Where? What is it,” asked Jack all at one breathe.
“I’m not sure, but it’s on the tree over there!” replied Emma, the panic unmistaken in her voice.
As the trio approached the scene, their jaws dropped in bewilderment. On the tree before them was crafted the strangest thing they’d ever come across in Blossomwood forest since they assumed their duties as Treekeepers.
What do you think this is?” asked Max.
"I have no idea," replied Jack, equally as puzzled. "But it definitely looks like someone put it there on purpose. It's not just some random marking."
“It looks pretty old-fashioned. Maybe it's some kind of ancient symbol." Emma observed.
“I agree,” said Max, “It does look odd.”
The marking on the tree was a circle with a star in the middle of it, and it was surrounded by strange, swirling lines. As the three children looked at each other, trying to make sense of what it was, nothing in the world prepared them for war right on the spot they stood in the heart of Blossomwood forest.
