Chapter 4

"Mrs. Brown, she's from the Patel family! How could we possibly offend her?" The security guard spoke with a nervous look on his face. Emily's status was well-known. Even if they worked for the powerful Brown family, they wouldn't dare act recklessly. "A bunch of cowards! You don't dare to offend the Patel family, but do you dare to cross the Brown family?" Claire snapped, her tone sharp and cutting. The two security guards exchanged uneasy glances, neither daring to respond. "What's going on here?" At that moment, Evelyn came rushing out of the villa. "Evelyn! You're finally here! Look at what he's done to Dominic!" The moment Claire saw Evelyn, she burst into tears, her voice rising as she complained. To someone unaware of the situation, it might have seemed like she was the one who'd been bullied. "What happened? Who did this?" Evelyn's face darkened as she looked at Dominic, his face swollen like a balloon and his clothes covered in filth. "Who else could it be? It was that b*stard Gabriel!" Claire's voice was full of indignation as she continued, "Mia and Dominic ran into him at the gate and chatted for a little while. But Gabriel flew into a rage and started cursing them!" She continued, "Dominic tried to defend himself, and Gabriel attacked him! He even threw Dominic into a trash can!" She began to sob, "Poor Dominic! Look at him. He's beaten black and blue, covered in garbage, and his shirt, worth over 10,000 dollars, is completely ruined. It's outrageous!" As Claire spoke, tears streamed down her face again. "Gabriel?" Evelyn frowned deeply. "He's always had a good temper. Why would he hit Dominic? Did you provoke him?" "Evelyn, what's that supposed to mean? Are you saying you trust that jerk over your own family?" Mia's face turned red with anger as she spoke. "I just want to figure out what really happened," Evelyn said softly, glancing at Mia. During the three years of marriage, Evelyn knew Gabriel's character well. He was always composed and kind, never one to lose his temper easily. It didn't make sense for him to resort to violence over a few simple words. "But he beat up Dominic. Isn't that proof enough? If you don't believe me, ask the security guards. They saw everything." As she spoke, Claire shot the two guards a pointed look. "Ms. Brown, Mrs. Brown is right. That good-for-nothing went crazy and started hitting Mr. Santos. If we hadn't stepped in, your mom and sister might have been in danger too!" The guards quickly chimed in, eager to back Claire up. "Evelyn, did you hear that? We're not making this up," Mia said, her tone full of self-righteousness. She continued, "I've told you before, Gabriel is a b*stard. He's poor, deceitful, and now that you're divorced, he's finally showing his true colors!" Her curse didn't just stop there. "Not only did he beat up Dominic, but he's also hooked up with your best friend, Emily!" "A man like that isn't just heartless. He's a total scumbag!" she commented angrily. Evelyn's frown deepened, suspicion creeping into her heart. 'Gabriel hooked up with Emily? Could it really be his fault? Was he acting out because of the divorce? If that was true, then I've misjudged him,' Evelyn thought. After a moment of hesitation, Evelyn finally made up her mind. "Mia, take Dominic to the hospital. I'll handle this." "Evelyn, you have to stand up for Dominic. Don't let that jerk get away with this!" Mia said angrily. Evelyn nodded. "Don't worry. I'll take care of it." Mia then helped Dominic into the car and took him to the hospital. Once Mia and Dominic drove off, Evelyn turned to Claire. "Mom, what do you think really happened?" Evelyn walked with her mother into their residence, asking. She rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on. "Evelyn, isn't it obvious? Gabriel hit Dominic. The security guards saw it. Why won't you believe us?" Claire's tone was full of frustration. Evelyn still felt suspicious. "Mom, did you provoke him too?" She knew her mother's domineering nature, as well as Mia and Dominic's arrogance. "No matter what, using violence is wrong!" Claire huffed, still angry. "Even if there was some misunderstanding, he should have defended himself. Dominic is your sister's fiancé, but Gabriel beat him up. It's like a slap in your face. Doesn't that show how little respect he has for you? This just proves what kind of man he is!" Evelyn's brows furrowed, her impression of Gabriel worsening. Claire's words made sense. Even if her family were arrogant, Gabriel shouldn't have resorted to violence. Besides, Gabriel hit Dominic so hard. She'd felt guilty before, but now it seemed divorcing him was the right choice. "Evelyn, you can't let this slide. He has to pay for what he's done." Claire's voice was full of spite as she added, "If Gabriel dares to hit someone, he needs to face the consequences!" Already irritated, Evelyn felt her anger rising as her mother kept pushing. She pulled out her phone and called Gabriel. "Gabriel, I need an explanation!" At that moment, Gabriel was sitting in the back of a luxurious Rolls-Royce. When he saw Evelyn's name on the screen, he answered immediately, but her sharp tone caught him off guard. Gabriel asked with a frown, "An explanation for what?" "Did you beat up Dominic just now?" "Yes, but—" Gabriel started to explain, but Evelyn cut him off. "So it really was you! I didn't think you'd stoop this low! What, just because we're divorced, you think you can take it out on my family?" Gabriel froze, stunned by her sudden hostility. She didn't even ask for an explanation. She just jumped straight to conclusions. They had been husband and wife for three years, but there wasn't even a shred of trust between them. Even strangers wouldn't treat him this way. "Evelyn, is this really what you think of me?" Gabriel's voice turned cold. "You know I hit him, but have you ever thought about why?" "It doesn't matter why! Violence is never justified!" Evelyn shot back, her tone firm. Gabriel let out a bitter laugh, his disappointment clear. At this point, right and wrong didn't seem to matter. It was obvious Evelyn cared more about her sister's fiancé than him. "Gabriel, since we were once married, I'll give you a chance. Go to the hospital and apologize to Dominic. If you do, I'll let this go. Otherwise..." Gabriel's words dripped with sarcasm, his patience wearing thin. "So what if I refuse? Are you gonna call the police or have someone beat me up?" Evelyn's voice rose, her anger spilling over. "Gabriel, do you really have no shame? Do you have to turn us into enemies?" The security guard spoke with a nervous look on his face.
